That guy just wasted his time
It was probably, intellectually, an interesting and challenging project. But that guy has just wasted his summer - and his code - building something no one actually wants. Have a look here - http://pipedot.org/story/2014-... where there's reporting about a growing systemd boycott taking place.
People don't like or want systemd and are increasingly organizing to avoid it. Non systemd distros - gentoo, slackware - plus FreeBSD, where I'll be migrating my home computer tonight after work - are starting to look pretty darned good to people again.
It's true there is a need for something more dynamic and responsive than the old init script system, but systemd is not it.

Re:Is the history he teaches incorrect?
PS: Sorry, the Polish are worried that if the Russians invade then millions of Ukrainian refugees will come to Poland.
PPS: Anyone else notice how absolutely fucking retarded the Slashdot commenting system is in regards to minimising posting frequency. How are we meant to have a discussion if we are rate limited like that? I know there are dickheads like GNAA out there, but this is essentially DRM: inconvenience for the legitimate posters, with minimal impact on the trolls...
Time to go to PipeDot I think.

Re:neither science nor news.
Try pipedot.org, it's awesome.

Re:People should leave. They Don't.
I completely agree with the message behind your post.
Personally I gave up on humanity when I realised that people were still buying battery eggs. This is a very simple situation regarding animal welfare, and yet so many continue to choose the cheaper option. I think it says a lot about the values of our society, for what else makes us human than an active choice to protect those around us who are unable to protect themselves? This includes, in my opinion, being humane to the animals and livestock that we farm and harvest for food.
If people won't even pay a few cents per egg, then they certainly won't pay a few cents per gallon (or litre) for fuel.
Sigh. if I'm allowed to rant a little more, my PS to this post is that the thing I hate even more than people buying battery eggs, are those who buy non-battery eggs (also called "free range" or "cage free" depending on where you are from) from the same companies that also sell battery eggs. For fuck sake. I don't want to buy any egg (or meat, or fuel...) from any motherfucker that is engaged in behaviour that I don't want to support.
PPS: Dear SlashDot. Your posting "security" is stupid beyond belief. I started typing this while connected via my VPN. While typing this post I disconnected my VPN and now I want to submit the post. Instead I get a "your resource is no longer valid" error message...WTF! I'm not even logged in. If anyone wanted evidence that Slashdot is logging all user activity (for state security, or marketing "partnerships" reasons) then this is it.
...fuck this site. I'm outa here. -
Re:Moderation?
It's free.
But it's not as good as you think it is.
Go check out this alternative, built recently on a much much better code base: http://www.pipedot.org

Re:OT: this stuff was solved in the 90's
PipeDot has a *fantastic* interface which leaves this place for dead. Period.
Check it out!

Re:wtf forced on beta again?
I log in. I still get the beta pages (about 2 out of 5 articles) even though I've specified classic view. You can see in the comments how I'm dealing with it. There are alternatives.

Too late
Thought it was a dupe at first, then remembered that this had been posted already to one of the other sites.

Slashdot spin-offs for beta-haters:

Re:Question
Better yet, people should be moving to:
Modern features like UTF-8. Fast clean interface. Its what beta should have been. Keeps everything good, throws out the bad. Plus, better name than solyant. Less drama.

Re:Slashdot continues its decline

soylentnews
If SoylentNews wasn't so shit I'd be tempted to move over there.
I think the other sites have better stories on average, but there are better comments on

Re:Nice Advertisement
Aren't they imploding over some ego tantrums? You could check out, http://technocrat.net/, http://squte.com/ or https://pipedot.org/ if you're looking for a site that actually works.

other alternatives
There are a number of options, as well as http://soylentnews.org/ there is http://pipedot.org./ There are a lot of ex-slashdotter on the comp.misc newsgroup. http://squte.com/ (my own site) provides a slashdot-like interface to newsgroups.

Re:Slashdot Beta
Don't forget the other sites that have popped up post-beta as well: Technocrat and Pipedot Choice is good.

Re:Alternative media are the solution!
When all the news source belong to big corporations, how can one be surprised that press freedom is disappearing ?
Looks like altslashdot.org and SoylentNews have joined forces, since they resolve to the same site.

Yep, just launched: http://pipedot.org/story/2014-...

More choices
Plus, the more you distribute the data, the more backups you have. I'd hate to loose gigabytes of family photos to a single hard drive failing. There are a few companies, like pogoplug, producing consumer friendly storage devices that are inexpensive ($20) and hide all the complex software pieces behind a nice web interface.
Also, I plan on making a slashdot-inspired site. The website will be called "Pipedot" and be reachable at pipedot.org or pipedot.com. The motto will be "News for nerds, without the corporate slant." Get it? A pipe character looks like a slash without the slant!
I'm committed to providing a free and independent resource without the influence of a parent corporate overlord. The site will be decidedly non-profit and have zero advertisements, zero adobe flash, zero google analytics, etc...
As a special bonus, the site can now be reached at fuckbeta.org! Stay tuned for more updates...
