Re:Not bad.
How much did it cost to make the 50 dollar game?
How much did it cost to make the 2 dollar game? You have scale issues.
A very interesting report on Eurogamer.net, informed partly by a recent interview on Maxitmag.co.uk, reveals that Half-Life 2's development has cost developer Valve upwards of $40 million to-date - a gigantic figure where videogame development is concerned.
http://www.play.tm/news/3217/half-life-2-costs-40-million-to-date/
. According to Carmel, World of Goo has been built with a budget of just $10,000 dollars, all of which comes from personal savings.
http://venturebeat.com/2009/01/02/the-world-of-goo-became-one-of-the-indie-hits-of-2008/
NOTE: World of goo was an actual Humble Bundle game.
At 2 dollars a pop World of Goo needs 5,000 customers to break even.
At 50 dollars a pop HL2 needs 800,000 customers to break even. -
The PS3 is a long term purchase...
Blu-Ray and the PS3 (and its power) are the future of gaming. The 360 is already at its limit as to what games it can handle. I'll still play Virtua Fighter 5 Online on my 360 until the day they drop the servers, but my PS3 is used for every other game I play on consoles.
http://play.tm/news/23623/tekken-6-pushing-360-limits/Katsuhiro Harada, one of the senior developers behind Namco Bandai's Tekken 6, has said that his new game is pushing the very limits of the Xbox 360 console, and that his game may have an influence over the specifications of the system's eventual successor.
"It is a challenge to fit this game onto one DVD and to make sure the data is read at a fast rate," Harada explained in a new interview.
Harada's title was conceived originally for the PS3, and squeezing the game on to the 360 seems to be quite a task, the designer struggling to ensure the title runs at a smooth 60fps on the new hardware.
When games like Tekken 6, or Killzone 2, or Metal Gear Solid 4, begin being regularly produced for the PS3 it will be only that, for the PS3. No one will be able to make those games for the 360 unless they significantly tone down the visuals and size of the game. Tekken 6 is going to be an inferior port on the 360 because the arcade version of Tekken 6 was designed with a PS3 based arcade board. The 360 can't handle Tekken 6 at full capacity, something MS didn't anticipate when they payed Namco to break the console exclusive strategy they've usually done with the previous Tekken games. Tekken has usually been on Sony consoles and Tekken 6 was made on a PS3 arcade board because Namco wanted the most visuals out of their game and has a long standing relationship with SONY hardware. Now MS is taking a slight hit in the media because when they coerced Namco into porting the game to the 360 they assumed their console could handle the game.
And as for the cost of the PS3 right now? The PSN is free to play games on, XBL is not. I pay $40-$50 a year for XBL, across a few years that adds up to a lot of money in the long run to play online. Factor in that the 360 elite is still $400 and the PS3 with a Blu-Ray drive is $460 the price difference is negligible when you weigh what you get. Factor in that I've lost not one, but three 360 units to the red ring of death since launch, and I own two PS3s that have never had any issues whatsoever that I am aware of, including letting them run for hours and hours upon end running the Folding At Home client without shutting them off for days at a time.

Re:Criminal intent?
WoW's not even the only app to use BitTorrent type tech. Steam does as well
No, it doesn't It uses a distributed CDN, with servers hosted by companies all around the world.
How about you do YOUR research before stating "facts" you obviously have no first hand knowledge of.
-
Re:Criminal intent?
This same tired argument gets dragged out every time this comes up. There are A LOT of WoW users and WoW's not even the only app to use BitTorrent type tech. Steam does as well. (yes, 4 year old link. I spent 5 seconds googling, do your own research.)
It hasn't even been proven that all of the music / programs / movies getting downloaded are truly being pirated. Tons of people bought Spore and then downloaded cracked versions to avoid activation issues. When I used file sharing apps to get music I already owned about 90% of the stuff I was downloading. I was just too lazy to bring my CDs to work to rip them. It was easier to just DL it. Same with movies. How many people have DVD ripping software compared to how many people have bittorrent? -
Meanwhile ... In Neighboring MicrosoftiaMeanwhile in the enemy camp of Microsoft (maybe not so enemy now that HD-DVD is dea), they claim they were concentrating on HD downloads (digital distribution) the whole time! "The horse that we're fundamentally backing is the one that says the future of entertainment content is online digital distribution. I would argue that we backed the right horse," Xbox UK chief Neil Thompson told The Guardian.
"If we're sitting here in 12 or 18 months time, we'll be saying, 'Why were people even thinking about a disc format when it's really about digital distribution?' Our strategy's been developed for the last six or seven years, and ever since we launched the platform this has been our big, big, big bet." So I guess you still have two camps here--Sony who thinks Blu-Ray is the future and Microsoft who is now betting on downloads of HD.
Convenience and you being at the mercy of whether or not your ISP deems that traffic taxable or expensive bulky disc boxes with insane prices? Good luck, consumer, you're bound to be screwed one way or the other! -
Re:Also affecting Sony's per-unit costTook me less than, say, two minutes to pre-order online. No time in the store. Try again. Most people who don't work at the mall would include the travel time to get there.
Seriously, faster is better, period. It is amazing that you are pulling the install time out of your ass to somehow say the Xbox has an advantage. The 360 tears for God's sake. -
Re:Hey! They got games for Mac too...Ah yes, because you can't buy console games at newegg, or any other online retailer for that matter. Not that it's relevant. What matters is what percentage of sales for PC or consoles is made online. Spare the sarcasm. And lets be honest, sales from services like Steam and Direct2Drive are rather insignificant compared to that coming from brick and mortar stores, that is if they ever actually released those numbers. This Google News listed story says 1/3 of software sales are made online. Steam accounts for 3 million gamers monthly. There's a bit of obviousness about this question. If you're the type of person that shops for games online, are you more likely a PC gamer or a console gamer? Personally, I've never considered buying console games online. And I haven't bought a PC game in a store in over 5 years. Part of that is the poor selection and high prices in B&M stores. Steam takes that a step further and lets me play while it's downloading. Not to mention recently you have such time vacuums like World of Warcraft that have been drying up PC gaming dollars that might go elsewhere. I wouldn't exactly call that "drying up." WoW brings in a lot of casual gamers that wouldn't be interested in most other online PC games.

Re:Jack Picture
Anyone have a picture of this guy. You cannot make up some of the stuff this guy does and I am curious to see if you can see the crazy in his eye.
You be the judge! -
Re:Jack Picture
Sorry, but if you can't see the crazy here
... well, stop looking. -
Re:Sony and Microsoft, yeah. Nintendo? Not that ba
Never heard of that. Sounds interesting. Any sources?
Even so, as I said, all of the things you've mentioned happened a long time ago, mostly during the NES and SNES era.
here and here.
The last one being fairly comprehensive. I personally don't see whats wrong with most of the suits but they have some parity with Lik Sang in my eyes.
Also the N64 was as much hubris as the PS3. They were one of the primary manufactures of game carts so they profited more from using the carts rather then CD's since they didn't press CD's. Even the mini-Rom employed in the GC. While PS3 goes bluray to help Sony's format and line Sony's pockets with extra licensing fees.
Much of the criticism of Sony and MS that works it's way into Console rants is also old news. Ninetendo is like a friend of mine. When she was young thin and attractive she was a total bitch. But in the last 10 years she's gotten fat, learned her lesson, and has become a genuinely good person. Nintendo was a bully, got smacked, learned their lesson. They've been good now. Give them 3 years and we may hear of Nintendo's root-kit equivalent. -
Ummm... you're talking out of your ass
"I'm liable - wether I knew they uploaded it or not. "
There's more than a reasonable case made, ironically, by the DMCA that as long as YouTube follows DMCA takedown notices that there is a safe harbor in the law. Your opinion doesn't change that. Neither does mine, but what I can say is that Viacom be involved in a lot of lawsuits and seems to settle a lot:

Sometimes they even commit fraud:

I'm suggesting that Viacom sues regardless of their real legal position. They're a "sue first and then hash it out" company. I'm guess Google wins this after a judge strongly suggests the law is on Google's side.
