LittleBigPlanet to Have Enemies
Media Molecule Producer Pete Wilson has revealed to EGM (as reported by 1up) that LittleBigPlanet's level can have bad guys. "It's funny -- I don't think we actually mentioned this previously, but yes, we will certainly have enemies in the game; I think that's a fundamental part of good gameplay," said Wilson. "They will range from little robots that simply roam from left to right to spectacularly complex beasts that pose quite a challenge." An awesome concept just got cooler.
Can't wait for Little Big Planet, it's the next generation of video game. People who are always whining about games not being innovative need to check this one out. You've NEVER played a game like Little Big Planet before.
It seems this game will rock in an almost unbelievable amount of ways.
I don't think enemies are fundamental to good gameplay at all; a vast mumber of games don't have opponents.
Challenges are fundamental to good gameplay however. An 'enemy' is just one of the many ways of representing a challenge.
Dude, I have a PS3 and even actually play it from time to time (although I have to admit that today's (7/27) Ctrl-Alt-Del comic http://www.ctrlaltdel-online.com/comic.php rings a little too true). I don't understand why everyone on Slashdot seems to hate Sony so badly.
But even *I* think your post seems a little off-the-wall and reeks of Sony astroturfing.
I must agree that's not a bad list. There's a handful of titles in there that I'd want to play, for sure.
The price is still going to be an issue for a little while, though, I reckon. And I bring this up because PS3's *biggest list of exclusives* is actually... Blu-Ray movies! And this matters *until* cheaper blu-ray players start hitting the market. For now the PS3 is a bargain blu-ray player, all things considered, but disc players tend to drop in price WAY faster than consoles.
Anyway that was kinda off-topic but meh I wanted to mention it.
LittleBigPlanet is quite cool, though, especially now that it will have compootar adversaries ^_^
I like basketball!!1!
"I don't understand why everyone on Slashdot seems to hate Sony so badly."
Uh, you mean a handful of fanboys(notice the same people day after day) hang out on Slashdot and revel in the daily bit of Zonk FUD? Don't be a fool, there are now 120 million PS2s out there, 5 million PS3, and Sony is selling some 400k new PS2+PS3s every month just in the US alone. Slashdot is utterly irrelevant to the console market and console gamers.
Zonk has single handedly ruined Slashdot as a place anyone comes to get or discuss console news anymore.
Circumcision is child abuse.
I mean yeah, I like info about Little Big Planet because I'm a platformer nerd, but I'm scratching my head about why it's still headline news. Sure, it deserves an initial news posting about being a platformer with user-generated content--I don't think that's been done on a large scale officially before (though obviously there's a thriving underground ROM hack community). But is the cool concept of "a platformer...with enemies!" really newsworthy?
Suddenly Xbots and Ntards are concerned about using accurate sales data...LOL
The PS3 has sold 5 million worldwide. Go cry in your fanboy blankies...
Really? "Troll" doesn't seen appropriate, but the first post in this chain is sure as hell off-topic.
Goo goo g'joob.
Why would you care about mod points or karma, since you only post as an anonymous coward anyways?
I don't think enemies are fundamental to good gameplay at all; a majority of good games (video and otherwise) do have opponents. I also think a lot of games without opponents would greatly benefit from them if the game mechanics allow.
I watched the preview videos when it was announced, and I mean sure it looked cool (and very technologically impressive), but as a game it was unspeakably dull. Now I'm more interested in following the game's progress - if there will be enemies, then at least something engaging will be going on.
Has it been stated whether or not the game will ship with a pre-made campaign / "story" mode, or will it be entirely make-your-own-sandbox?
Glog!
Alex 'statix' Evans, demoscene demi-god... did a horrible stint at Lionhead before going independant (as he should). He's got the graphical programming cleverness of Carmack but with a bit more breadth. This is a huge fucking coup for him.
This is like WAD file editing mixed with The Incredible Machine, all enabled with built-in internet connectivity; I'd feel safe letting my kids play this online.
If I had some.
I'm going to go make some just so they can play this. BRB

Surely people mostly want positive moderation for 1) getting people to read their posts, and 2) the warm fuzzy feeling of knowing they agree with the Slashdot hive-mind(for humorless; the warm fuzzy feeling of knowing there are people who agree with them—there isn't always anything bad about this). Both of these apply to AC posts.
I believe very few people—probably only advanced trolls who intend to mod their own posts containing goatse links and the like up using proxies—actually ever fish for mod points. People just desire recognition, on the level of respect for a pseudonym or on the level of agreement with a post.
"I think that's a fundamental part of good gameplay."
Bullshit. I just finished "Ico", an early 2001 PS2 game, that was incredibly intense, and with the acception of a few pointlessly easy battles, had no bad guys. If anything, I could have done completely without the baddies, and the game would have been just as good. It's not a fundamental part of good gameplay, it's called "status quo". Obviously, every game, story, even piece of music, needs to have something that causes tension, but "bad guys" are only one of many options. In Ico, the antagonist was mainly gravity, the wall in front of you, and the frailty of the little girl you were leading around. Those were good enough. The baddies added a little in some areas, subtracted in others.
This line completely destroys any credibility this developer ever had in my mind. Good bye.

Since you don't refute the previous post... please explain how someone other than Sony built and sold 600,000 PS3s without going to jail?
Thanks for the link, I have never been happier that I shook the CCG thing early.

Ok, this is kinda funny. Especially since I was hit by the blackout:
The 1UP Network is currently unavailable so that our data center 365 Main can upgrade its power systems. Yes, the same 365 Main that caused a chunk of the internet to disappear earlier this week when its backup generators didn't fire. We'll be back online shortly, though, we promise.

Sony is selling some 400k new PS2+PS3s every month just in the US alone
Should be noted that 270k of that is PS2 sales, the PS3 is moving at below 100k a month. For a comparison the Wii is doing 380k that month and the DS 560k while the 360 sells 198k, still twice the sales of the PS3.
Justice is the sheep getting arrested while an impartial judge declares the vote void.
This is unbelievably good news. Now we will finally have a game with enemies!! This is possibly the most important news I have seen, in my entire life. There is a GOD!
Brilliant marketing too! First they announce a game, then show 1 level, then announce a revolutionary new feature for that level. We can only hope that next they will announce that one of their levels has points! or Buttons! or OMG The possibilities are practically endless for a company with this much raw brain power. Maybe they might even have a cut scene, wheww gotta stop, i am giving myself chills.

While I would agree that Microsoft isn't better than Sony, Nintendo's faults are comparatively minor. They censored games during the NES/SNES times, and they forced games to not come out on other consoles during that time. But other than that, I can't remember a lot of bad things they did, especially not during the last decade or so.

The first run NES was a piece of crap hardware they were forced to recall. If you don't like DRM Ninetendo has had it since the NES (pretty mild lock out pins). For a time any company could only release 5 games a year irregardless of quality. During the NES/SNES era they were no better then Sony in regards to arrogance. If you wanted to sell games you had to play by their rules they were fairly arbitrary in their censorship and demands before licencing. It bit them in the ass with the N64 and they've atoned since. They also litigated third party unlicenced vendors into oblivion similiar to what Sony did to Lik Sang.

Actually, I'd chalk this up as a plus for Nintendo. Unlike Microsoft, they didn't fuck around. They recalled all NES consoles, took the time to figure out what was wrong, and then re-launched it. Microsoft could learn a thing or two from Nintendo here.
If you don't like DRM Ninetendo has had it since the NES (pretty mild lock out pins). All console manufacturers try to do this because they make money licensing games.

They censored games and screwed with third-parties. It's somewhat understandable given that they wanted to avoid the 2600's fate, but it's still pretty evil.
They also litigated third party unlicenced vendors into oblivion similiar to what Sony did to Lik Sang.Never heard of that. Sounds interesting. Any sources?
Even so, as I said, all of the things you've mentioned happened a long time ago, mostly during the NES and SNES era.

here and here.
The last one being fairly comprehensive. I personally don't see whats wrong with most of the suits but they have some parity with Lik Sang in my eyes.
Also the N64 was as much hubris as the PS3. They were one of the primary manufactures of game carts so they profited more from using the carts rather then CD's since they didn't press CD's. Even the mini-Rom employed in the GC. While PS3 goes bluray to help Sony's format and line Sony's pockets with extra licensing fees.
Much of the criticism of Sony and MS that works it's way into Console rants is also old news. Ninetendo is like a friend of mine. When she was young thin and attractive she was a total bitch. But in the last 10 years she's gotten fat, learned her lesson, and has become a genuinely good person. Nintendo was a bully, got smacked, learned their lesson. They've been good now. Give them 3 years and we may hear of Nintendo's root-kit equivalent.

I've had ENOUGH of these $%#@%! enemies in my @#@%!! game!!!

while i am quite the nintendo fanboy, i would like to add to the list that there have been successful antitrust cases against nintendo too...
