LittleBigPlanet to Have Enemies

Media Molecule Producer Pete Wilson has revealed to EGM (as reported by 1up) that LittleBigPlanet's level can have bad guys. "It's funny -- I don't think we actually mentioned this previously, but yes, we will certainly have enemies in the game; I think that's a fundamental part of good gameplay," said Wilson. "They will range from little robots that simply roam from left to right to spectacularly complex beasts that pose quite a challenge." An awesome concept just got cooler.

    Can't wait for Little Big Planet, it's the next generation of video game. People who are always whining about games not being innovative need to check this one out. You've NEVER played a game like Little Big Planet before.

      I don't know about that. I think Sony is as dumb and foolish as the next guy, but unless LBP changes significantly, it will be my killer app for the PS3. I will drop $500 early to get an Emotion Engine unit. I might even camp out for LBP if I think it's necessary.

      Right the user maps for warcraft 3 and all the mods for FPS's all crap. Counter strike.. crap. Doom TC's Crap. Team Fortress crap. Capture the flag in quake. Crap. DOTA, who plays that. Defence maps crap. Yeah user generated content is terrible.

      User contend is what drives youtube, what drives most FPS's and even blizzard RTS's or never winter nights. There is a wealth of creative people who may not want to do it full time and thus they make things like Planescape clone from neverwinter nights. The success of failure of the PS3 will not determine the size of your penis so you stop with the numbered sentences that say "I have an illogical emotional investment in or against a piece of hardware and the company behind it."

      I would have wanted to give you all my 5 mod points insightful if it wasn't that I had already answered in the thread.

      Your post is spot on, I play WC3 quite often but I'd say that most people seems to play DOTA, Angel Arena (is that the name of it?) and similair, atleast very many. And yes, CS are played waay more than regular Half Life.

      Thought I'm not sure that's related to this game since it might not work the same for this title and be as good, but you can do maps aswell and not only be creative with your character design? The later part is cool and I would like to have one as avatar but it doesn't gurantee a good game.

      Another game where user created content helped a lot is Elastomanias Across. Lemmings with user created maps would be sweet to.

      This game is Line Rider with 3D graphics- that's it. It's a 2D physics sim (no actual 3D simulation of objects) with some really pretty graphics. You could write the whole simulation engine in Java. User-created content on consoles? Been done since Excite Bike on the NES. So the user sets up a bunch of stuff that falls down when he bumps into it. Big deal. The Incredible Machine was a deeper game than this. But wait, now they have enemies that can patrol left AND right. Wow. Truly this is the next generation! The fact that the makers/supporters of this "game" thought the addition of enemies warranted an announcement says a great deal about how very thin the concept is.

      Nope, sadly it's a completely different game. You can find various videos on gametrailers.com and it does look very interesting.

    Challenges are fundamental to good gameplay however. An 'enemy' is just one of the many ways of representing a challenge.

      I actually think enemies will make LittleBigPlanet a bit less enjoyable.
      LBP's concept (for me atleast) is a sort of platform/puzzle game. Introducing enemies will move it more into platform area and out of puzzle area, which to me seems less like what I'd enjoy. It really depends on how the enemies are implemented though; if they require pounding a gazillion time it'll be less fun then if they require a short and tactical approach.

    I must agree that's not a bad list. There's a handful of titles in there that I'd want to play, for sure.

    The price is still going to be an issue for a little while, though, I reckon. And I bring this up because PS3's *biggest list of exclusives* is actually... Blu-Ray movies! And this matters *until* cheaper blu-ray players start hitting the market. For now the PS3 is a bargain blu-ray player, all things considered, but disc players tend to drop in price WAY faster than consoles.

    Anyway that was kinda off-topic but meh I wanted to mention it.

    LittleBigPlanet is quite cool, though, especially now that it will have compootar adversaries ^_^

    Uh, you mean a handful of fanboys(notice the same people day after day) hang out on Slashdot and revel in the daily bit of Zonk FUD? Don't be a fool, there are now 120 million PS2s out there, 5 million PS3, and Sony is selling some 400k new PS2+PS3s every month just in the US alone. Slashdot is utterly irrelevant to the console market and console gamers.

    Zonk has single handedly ruined Slashdot as a place anyone comes to get or discuss console news anymore.

    I mean yeah, I like info about Little Big Planet because I'm a platformer nerd, but I'm scratching my head about why it's still headline news. Sure, it deserves an initial news posting about being a platformer with user-generated content--I don't think that's been done on a large scale officially before (though obviously there's a thriving underground ROM hack community). But is the cool concept of "a platformer...with enemies!" really newsworthy?

      The handful of teaser videos that show actual gameplay look cool and unique. Beyond that, there is not really much to say, but it's sort of a breath of fresh air for PS3 owners hoping that the hardware will deliver on its promise. The game wouldn't draw nearly as much attention if it was being developed for any other console.

      I'm pretty sure that the Nintendo fanboys would go apeshit for this game, considering that they're already feeling as though Nintendo is abandoning them. Seeing as Nintendo made the platformer what it is, this game definitely would be getting a ton of hype - and all the characters would be Mario like. As for Xbox, Microsoft fanboys would use this as the game that is the death knell to the PS3. Combined with Katamari, Guitar Hero, and GTA, the inovative titles that made the PS2 what it was last generation would now be on the 360 this generation.

      But it's not on either of those platforms. It's on the Playstation 3. The story here isn't just another platformer - it's the whole package that Sony is producing - Home, LBP both are going to be driven by user content, and that hasn't happened yet on a console, and it probably will help the PS3 stand apart.

      I'm afraid the Nintendo fans already went apeshit over Super Paper Mario, and are soon to go apeshit over Mario Galaxy. Neither game got as much press as LittleBigPlanet.

      Not that there's anything wrong with LittleBigPlanet, but to date nobody has actually played the game. User-generated content didn't do much for the sales of Mario vs DK for the DS.

      That's Mario vs. DK 2, by the way. MvDK (1) promised a level editor but didn't deliver on it. While MvDK is a sequel to the SGB Donkey Kong, MvDK2 has very indirect gameplay that I'm not sure how to describe (not exactly lemmings, anyone here played Eets? It seems kinda like that).

      Oh how much the "Mario like characters" part made me feel bad, the game looks awesome (in graphics) / cute but it's all because of the characters, it would be totally ruined by having mario, luigi and so on in it.

      Not all Nintendo games need them.. I'm not that much impressed by the non-mario-games-containing-mario.

      I'm for sure isn't and wheren't going "apeshit" over Super Paper Mario when released because for understandable reasons they changed target platform from Gamecube to Wii, but I don't own a Wii and won't own one for a while and there are no reason why this game would need a Wii except that they saw more sales there and Wii owners are more likely to buy Wii games than Gamecube games. Still sad thought. It was the best "no, this isn't for Wii, it's for Gamecube, you know the cube is good aswell"-argument I had =P

    I don't think enemies are fundamental to good gameplay at all; a majority of good games (video and otherwise) do have opponents. I also think a lot of games without opponents would greatly benefit from them if the game mechanics allow.

    I watched the preview videos when it was announced, and I mean sure it looked cool (and very technologically impressive), but as a game it was unspeakably dull. Now I'm more interested in following the game's progress - if there will be enemies, then at least something engaging will be going on.

    Has it been stated whether or not the game will ship with a pre-made campaign / "story" mode, or will it be entirely make-your-own-sandbox?

      They said something about having a (large?) number of pre-made levels. I don't remember if they gave a ballpark number of the count, or if they gave one at all. Don't remember hearing that it would be a story or campaign mode, but I also don't remember hearing that it wouldn't be.

      Looks pretty neat. Too bad everyone but the super hardcore fans will have moved on by the time PS3 is priced low enough for me to care. DAMN YOU SONY!

    Alex 'statix' Evans, demoscene demi-god... did a horrible stint at Lionhead before going independant (as he should). He's got the graphical programming cleverness of Carmack but with a bit more breadth. This is a huge fucking coup for him.

    This is like WAD file editing mixed with The Incredible Machine, all enabled with built-in internet connectivity; I'd feel safe letting my kids play this online.

    Surely people mostly want positive moderation for 1) getting people to read their posts, and 2) the warm fuzzy feeling of knowing they agree with the Slashdot hive-mind(for humorless; the warm fuzzy feeling of knowing there are people who agree with them—there isn't always anything bad about this). Both of these apply to AC posts.

    I believe very few people—probably only advanced trolls who intend to mod their own posts containing goatse links and the like up using proxies—actually ever fish for mod points. People just desire recognition, on the level of respect for a pseudonym or on the level of agreement with a post.

    Bullshit. I just finished "Ico", an early 2001 PS2 game, that was incredibly intense, and with the acception of a few pointlessly easy battles, had no bad guys. If anything, I could have done completely without the baddies, and the game would have been just as good. It's not a fundamental part of good gameplay, it's called "status quo". Obviously, every game, story, even piece of music, needs to have something that causes tension, but "bad guys" are only one of many options. In Ico, the antagonist was mainly gravity, the wall in front of you, and the frailty of the little girl you were leading around. Those were good enough. The baddies added a little in some areas, subtracted in others.

    This line completely destroys any credibility this developer ever had in my mind. Good bye.

    Should be noted that 270k of that is PS2 sales, the PS3 is moving at below 100k a month. For a comparison the Wii is doing 380k that month and the DS 560k while the 360 sells 198k, still twice the sales of the PS3.

    This is unbelievably good news. Now we will finally have a game with enemies!! This is possibly the most important news I have seen, in my entire life. There is a GOD!

    Brilliant marketing too! First they announce a game, then show 1 level, then announce a revolutionary new feature for that level. We can only hope that next they will announce that one of their levels has points! or Buttons! or OMG The possibilities are practically endless for a company with this much raw brain power. Maybe they might even have a cut scene, wheww gotta stop, i am giving myself chills.

They censored games during the NES/SNES times, and they forced games to not come out on other consoles during that time. But other than that, I can't remember a lot of bad things they did, especially not during the last decade or so.

    Actually, I'd chalk this up as a plus for Nintendo. Unlike Microsoft, they didn't fuck around. They recalled all NES consoles, took the time to figure out what was wrong, and then re-launched it. Microsoft could learn a thing or two from Nintendo here.

    The last one being fairly comprehensive. I personally don't see whats wrong with most of the suits but they have some parity with Lik Sang in my eyes.

    Also the N64 was as much hubris as the PS3. They were one of the primary manufactures of game carts so they profited more from using the carts rather then CD's since they didn't press CD's. Even the mini-Rom employed in the GC. While PS3 goes bluray to help Sony's format and line Sony's pockets with extra licensing fees.

    Much of the criticism of Sony and MS that works it's way into Console rants is also old news. Ninetendo is like a friend of mine. When she was young thin and attractive she was a total bitch. But in the last 10 years she's gotten fat, learned her lesson, and has become a genuinely good person. Nintendo was a bully, got smacked, learned their lesson. They've been good now. Give them 3 years and we may hear of Nintendo's root-kit equivalent.
