Do the Shuffle
While it has legs, it's really a stretch to call this walking.
Now this is a walker: http://www.plustech.fi/Walking1.html
Video: http://www.plustech.fi/WalkingVideo.html
Yes, it has more than 2 legs, but at least they come off the ground and wouldn't be stopped dead in it's tracks by a speed bump.
The walker reference probably came from it's gait, it looks like an old man in slippers while pushing a walker in front of him. -

Not true, here's a larger, walking robot
There is a larger, fully articulated (6-legged walking) robot that has been developed for the timber industry. It may not be quite as tall, but it's longer and looks like it may be able to carry heavier loads (like, y'know, whole trees at a time):
Walking Robot
Okay, so the arms on the story's mecha are more impressive, but is this not cool?. Place the mecha's arms on this thing and you'd have something respectably sci-fi. Wheels / tracked robots are so last century. ;) -

Re:Segway out of this bad idea!
The next step in technology should involve robots with legs
Like this thing? -
Re:Complicated much?On a large machine that must pick it's way carefully through a delicate area, legs may be a decided advantage.
Scope ye the Plustech Harvester. It uses six hydraulicly actuated legs and a big-assed arm with a gripper/saw on the end to harvest trees from delicate areas.
Some guys I went to high school with use horses to harvest hardwoods from Indiana forests due to the trees inaccessability to wheeled vehicles.
Legs are useful!

Re:Not first
This thing almost loooks like it could gallop (walking tree harvester from Finland - apparently it can sidestep like a crab, too).

Re:Looks cool, but what does it do?Cutting logs without damaging young trees and the rest of the forest.
It's not meant to haul a pile of logs. Just the one that it cut. If you look at the second photo, that shows exactly what it's going to do. Cut a log, strip it of it's branches (I've seen those cutters before. That's what the roller looking parts are for), and stack it for some other truck to haul away.

Aieeeee
MAN those things are loud. At least the operators at a nice interior with their 120 decibels of pain. (Though noone else will ever know quite how loud the videos are, once the first thousand people try to download the 7 megs of mpegs off of their site within the next 3 minutes.

best! robot! ever!
The real-life man-sized six-legged tree-harvesting freak used for commercial foresting.
