I also consider "Troops" to be one of the best Star Wars fan films, but another great show is Duality. It has a great fight scene, good special effects, and a clever ending proving that "Troops" was not the last word in fan films. Highly recommended.

Anyway, the real point of this post is that what you describe is already happening (and has been happening for a while) in sites like iFILM, Atomfilms and Pocketmovies, just to name a few that I can think of right now. As a 3D animator wannabe I still check them from time to time to see new animated shorts.

FWIW, download here. I love that short film... Especially Six >:P. The neat thing is they made a series of it on SciFi... Don't know when season 2's coming out though.

If you read the Yahoo page at http://yahoo.pcworld.com/yahoo/article/0,aid,11579 3,00.asp then you will see the statistic is "The research reveals 37 percent of 18- to 24-year-olds have downloaded a full-length motion picture from the Internet."

Also "24 percent of respondents reported that they had downloaded a movie online".

The 24% includes perfectly free-to-download stuff shorts like http://pocketmovies.net/ and http://www.archive.org/movies/prelinger.php

The 37%, being 'full length' is presumably meant to imply Hollywood releases, but can still include public domain stuff like the Prelinger material linked above, which includes full length movies.

It does piss me off that the MPA tries to associate every movie download as being of their copyrighted property; that's not so.

...but still impressive nonetheless.

Nice to see creativity from France. This is a nice addition to this upcoming French anime series ("Molly Star Racer").

Sorry, you're wrong. Viral marketing is often quite entertaining and rarely pushy. The true point of viral marketing is to make something that people WANT to to show their friends.

Here's an example: John West Salmon

That ad is perhaps the best example of viral marketing I've seen. I've seen it on TV three different times, not as a commercial, but as 'content'. Month after month this thing turned up in my user's mailboxes. Even now there are a ton of sites that you can download it from. I just got over 100 hits for it on Kazaa. John West isn't buying airtime to show the ad, it's got a life of it's own. It't viral.

No need for fraud or deception. Just killer content. Look at BMW Films for another example.
