Re:Heh
try pocomail, I've got my mum using that and so far haven't had any calls asking how to use her email.

Re:Turn off HTML viewing in your email client! There is a client called pocomail that I use that is pretty safe. It has an intuitive spam filter, you can script it to do about anything with mail, and it has a simple filter setup for sending messages from X to folder Y.
spam filter:
"viagra", +9
"herbal", +6
"natural", +6
"to be removed", +5
"free", +2
"!!!", +2You get the point. You can toggle things like loading external graphics etc. It is really a mail client for power users. Shareware, but one of the few programs I ever purchased.

Another example of Windows' designed insecurity
Outlook Express 6 SP1 now comes with a setting to "read all messages in plain text" Which is how I have my system configured and which gets rid of approximately 100% of email viruses. But unless you happen to be fiddling around with the configuration of OE, you'd never know this setting exists. If anything, Microsoft should be prominently advertising this "new, free" feature (which is of course ain't new, it's elm-level functionality) as a way to protect your system, but they won't.
Sure, but most people like their email with pretty colors. Then, fine, they should do what Poco Mail does, automatically "sanitize" email by stripping potentially harmful HTML coding and external image downloading (i.e. webbugs) while allowing basic HTML formatting to be read. This is not rocket science, but MS seems to be irresponsibly holding back on such basic safety improvements. -
Re:DAV as an integration method for outlook?
So, Outlook is this huge pipe for virii, worms and spam leading me to wonder.....why is anyone still using Outlook?
Excellent point. Especially amazing when so many free Windows alternatives exist:- Pegasus Mail does much more than Outlook...
- PocoMail does everything you need, and is secure
- The Bat is used by many, as a secure alternative
- Personally, I use only JBMail, which strips out HTML and has no scripting

Re:Well, i just did it...
suggestions for best non-outlook email program?
I use PocoMail, definitely the best e-mail client I've used on Windows. It's fast, compact, has its own HTML renderer that can block remote images, and generally has lots of neat usability features. Discovered it a couple of months ago and immediately switched from Eudora.
It's shareware, but there's a decent trial period on it (when expired, it will simply disable checking for new mail), and it only costs about $25. -
Whitelist + filters in client work great
I use Pocomail as a mail client. It's filters allow me to leave all mail on server, except mail from addresses already in my address book, plus whatever other filters I set up for mail lists, etc. it took all of five minutes to set this up, and no spam gets downloaded. I'm running POP, what the client is really doing is marking spam as already read, so it stays on the server. I peek at the server once a day to grab any good mail that got caught, and then delete the rest. Yes, I do have to take that extra step of looking at the mail on the server, but I'm only seeing the headers so its not that big of a deal. It takes all of 30 seconds to scan the headers, and now that I've been doing this for a while, its very clean and I rarely have anything on the server worth keeping. The Banysean stuff is cool and all, I just don't see that it's enough of an improvement over me current system to justify installing a new app.

Developers missed this...
In my testing (over the last 30 mins) I discovered that filtering is employed when the POP3 "RETR" (retrieve entire message) command is used but no filtering is done when the equally useful "TOP" (show me the headers and X lines of the body) command is issued by a client.
A huge advantage of also doing the filtering for the TOP command would be that mail clients such as The Bat, Pimmy, JBMail and PocoMail will let you preview all headers while leaving mail on the server (or deleting it, whatever) but without actually downloading the full message bodies.

Re:What's Mozilla got over IE/OE?
I don't use Mozilla Mail (I prefer PocoMail), so I can't say what it has over OE except less bugs and less security holes...but Mozilla trumps IE in every respect but plugin availability. In my experience in Windows 2000 Mozilla is able to load and render large pages much faster than IE (5.0, 5.5, and 6.0), especially on fast net connections, and is generally more stable. The tabbed browsing feature is immensely valuable. Haven't tried the popup blocker, since sites that have a lot of popups won't get return visits from me anyway. I highly recommend you try out Mozilla 1.0 RC1 in Windows. You'll probably find you like it quite a bit.
This post is from Mozilla 1.0 RC1 build 2002050701 in Gentoo Linux 1.1a. Mozilla rocks, and so does Gentoo ;-) -
Re:the batI searched for a good email client to use under windows a while ago. My preferred choise should:
Not need to be installed (no tampering with the system).
Be able to import Eudora adress books.
Be as small as possible.
Have an easy-to-use adress book.
Be freeware if possible.
Be configurable (looks, fonts, etc.).
Be able to handle multiple accounts.
Be able to read/remove HTML.
Pegasus and Eudora was both too large, so the list was narrowed down to:
Kaufman Mail Warrior.
Opera browser mail.
Poco mail
The bat!
i.Scribe
After trying these clients out separately for a while, I came to the conclusion that Poco mail fitted my list best. Not that it was outstanding in any way, the bat! and Kaufman was almost as good. I didn't like the interface of the bat though, and Kaufman, though very nice, had some problems with replying to HTML mails. The only things with poco that didn't fit my wish list is that it is not free and that it needed installation. Otherwise great program. I will be keeping an eye on Kaufman MW though. If some small details are improved, the client will rock.
If you know another WIN32 mail client that fits my wish list pretty close, please tell me. (Never satisfied :) -
Pocomail is the best I've tried so far.
I've tried mostly every windows email client out there, I chose pocomail because of it's abillity to handle multiple email addresses as well as filter all the mailing lists I'm on to seperate folder. It also has a functional email filter, is scriptable and you can skin it. If you are the type of peson that actually reads documentation it will do just about anything. I think it's fairly stable and it's one of 2 programs I have _ever_ purchased.
