Meanwhile, I've met fashion victims ready to spend $$$ on a phone, as long as it's small and the battery lasts for 5 days--oh but Nokia doesn't make those anymore...

Why does every decently designed model out there has to have a damn camera and color screen and a camera and games and a hard drive and make coffee too?!?

Check out http://www.pokia.com/. They make adaptors to plug conventional analog phone receivers into cellphones. In fact, some of their fancier models even have bluetooth, so you can be walking down the street, talking on the batphone, while your call is routed through your normal cellphone in your pocket. I think it's a pretty sweet idea.

You can often get them on eBay, they're known as Pokias (check out pokia.com for the bloke who started it all)

This is a nice idea, but wouldn't it be better to have a system that let you use your traditional landline-style handset even when you aren't in the house?

My cell phone has almost every piece of functionality I got from my PDA 3 years ago. Plus a crappy camera. Still no dice roller.

Sure, but can you use it like a CB radio (DJ Convoy)? Is it Shatner-compliant?

I'm amazed nobody so far has mentioned pokia.

If you want to go retro / futuristic at the same time, this is the way!

For quite a while now I have wanted to take an old handset like the ones on a rotary phone and make it into a bluetooth handset for my cell phone...

Kinda like a wireless Pokia

Like the console that fits in a joystick or these oldish-looking cell phones... what's next in this trend?

This isn't quite what you mean, but I saw this reference somewhere recently: Retro handsets for modern phones. I particularly like the Bluetooth one: the cord is just dangling there.....
