Re:Forget it
Try tropico - http://www.poptop.com/Tropico.htm
It's basically "sim-island", and you can run the government any way you like. Religious government with book burnings? Sure! Military state? Sounds great!
Granted, it's not incredibly deep, but it's quite a fun game. -
Re:what happened to PopTop
PopTop is probably busy with Shattered Union..
.. besides.. I much favored Tropico then RRT2.. RRT3 is pretty nifty, but the only thing interesting about Tropico 2 was the pirate theme.. the actual gameplay was kinda blah (it was developed by a different company....)
TBH, I don't play enough of the micro-games or whatever they are to be called.. (ok.. i do end up on Newgrounds on occasion.. but that's about it.. ).. when I first read this title, I thought it was about PopTop.. :( -
Re:Very nice...
Once you get Jets'n'Guns to start, Pontifex to not crash over sound buffer underruns constantly, Simcity 4 Deluxe to start (note: Not just SC4, the deluxe version), and Tropico to run, I'm sold.
But if you think you can replace Windows with WINE right now, you're deluded. I've got hundreds of PC games going back about 12 years. With programs from before 2000, it's about 50-50 run/won't even start. With more recent stuff, maybe 1 in 4 or 5 will run something resembling correctly. Let's not start about those games that don't like my 'debugger' or have DRM on the CD.
On a more positive note, Outpost 2 runs nicely, as does 1602 AD and Cyberstorm II. -
Re:why don't you....
Unfortunately, very few developer groups out there have the a good enough financial position to do something like this. Paradox Entertainment and a few others that hava a loyal fan base are starting to do this kind of thing, but most other studios are either owned by a big media conglomerate or just sold out to a big publisher. id is one of the few developers that has the power to do something like this and is not even trying.
I don't plan to buy the game until id releases the obligatory official patch that removes the copy protection once and for all, just like Bioware did with Neverwinter Nights. They won't get my money if they treat me like a thief

TropicoWhen it comes to political simulations, it just doesn't get much better than PopTop Software's Tropico--a game with all the simplicity of SimCity with significantly more depth and a far better sense of humor.

Re:RR Tycoon 2 vs RR Tycoon 2 Gold
It comes with all the extra scenarios from the second century addon pack plus 12 more and the strategy guide in html form. Essentially, its just package deal with a little extra. Got that from Poptop's site. The second century is not the game itself, just an addition to it. I think that might have confused you a little.
