Actually, ProcessTree is in the same news
Instead of the news about ProcessTree shutting down being related news, it's directly mentioned in the article.
"As soon as you offer any kind of incentive, you will invite cheating," said Armin Lenz, a former executive at a commercial distributed computing company who is familiar with the need for security in online projects. "Be it stats, money or giveaways -- it is just human nature to try to get things the easy way."
Armin Lenz was one of the founders of ProcessTree. In this article they call him a former executive. Voila, two news pieces in one, Seti@Home trying to stop cheaters and ProcessTree gone. Now ProcessTree needs to update their website to reflect their closing. But at least they did a good thing as one of their last gestures. The full text of the press release, Acrobat reader required, is here.

ProcessTree dead...?
I poked around on their site, but I couldn't find any sign of them closing up shop. Anyone got the mentioned e-mail care to post it here?
Though I didn't sign up with them, I found the idea/concept really cool. Too bad to see them go (if that is the case.)

I wonderI wonder if they could pay people running the client, just like Processtree plans to. I'm against some company getting a free ride with my bandwidth, but if they're going to pay me for it (even a relatively small amount), then I'm all for it.
What do you guys think?

This will be the first Processtree project?Hey, isn't that what the first for-pay Processtree project is going to do?
Look at their news page for information.According to that page, 'the job is a quality-of-service monitoring system that provides real-time updates on the performance and availability of websites.'
Wonder what they'll do with the data, though

...and they are only picking a few
Though they are only picking a few machines to run this test you should still - Sign up anyway - , it dosent hurt. Just think if this really takes off, you could leave your machine(s) running all day and possibly make just enough money each month to cover the electricity bill you ran up!
So, demand mileage when you sign up. -
Re:Why Windows
Here the ProcessTree partner statistics.
As you can see Linux is under 2%.
I thinks this is why they chose windows. -
Top ten people?
Top ten people of the decade?
It should read:
Top ten technologically-influential people of the decade.
Three cheers for social equality!

Re:Kill Lobbying.
85% of the population would also sign a document saying that residential districts cannot be taxed... We have such a nomitave public, and we "leave it up to them" to decide our nation's critical decisions that require expert thinking... NOT the masses.

I'm Not on Drugs (plural)
cccaaaaafffffeeeeiiiinnnnnnneeeeeee
Drug is defined as a "non food or drink that effects the way your mind and/or body work".
I eat caffeine. It is part of my daily food cosumption. Therefore, It is not a drug.
Other techies may waste away with the keyboard-mystifying weed or the monitor-flaming shroooms
...but i'm just sitting here with ma good ole pengins tryin to type faster on ma good ole 486.

Distributed computing for cash
Whilst projects like distributed.net and Seti@Home have clocked up shocking amounts of processor time (410497.11 years on Seti@Home), they're still running on the 'cool factor' of having your machine break codes or search for aliens.
Sites such as ProcessTree, and others, have been talking of paying for your computer time with micropayments, but so far nothing seems to have got off the ground.
Presumably with the added incentive of cash, the number of computers taking part will rocket. Does anyone have any firm information on the progress of these schemes? -
Multicast through IP_MASQ?Is it possible to get multicast content through an IP masq linux box?
ie.
Internet (Multicast Content) -> DSL -> IP_MASQ -> Multicast Client

I've already got a ProcessTree account...
...and I've had 80 people sign up for accounts under me... It's a bit of a pyramid scheme, but only goes for a couple of levels.
They're beta-testing on a voluntary project right now... but soon they might have paying work... we shall see. -
Re:Can you imagine ...But she has to be Open Source(TM)! Do you mean to say that you support a closed source Petrified and Naked Natalie Platform????
ProcessTree: It's like distributed.net, but you get paid.

It's still the frame rate.
Is there anything else such as applications, server services (ftp, http, nfs, etc) or non-games that I can see the performance increase in?
When I said "frame rate," I didn't necessarily mean first-person shooters. I could have meant radiosity raytracing frame rate in a m****n p*****e studio's rendering farm (T*y S***y 2 took nearly forever to render). And there's always SETI@home, distributed.net, and that new one that pays you for your MIPS.

Why bother.
I just do see why everyone wants to integrate everything together. I don't see this being a logical move, my cell phone should make and recieve calls, it should get my phone numbers using bluetooth from my PDA and it should leave playing music to my MP3 player. Also, I would have thought that the sound quality will not be that great, I mean how many times have you spoken to someone on a cell phone and then face to face and realised how different they sound. This is nothing more than a gimmick just like Casio's MP3 watch. Sure it maybe fun for a few days, but it won't be long before you'll go bac to seperate devices, especially when your phone battery dies in the middle of an important call because you've been playing MP3s all day. Another Internet distributed processing program.
The ProcessTree Network was created to bring two groups together: those who
have huge computing jobs to do; and millions whose computers just sit idle much of the time.
With the ProcessTree Network those BIG computing jobs can get done faster
and cheaper, and people can turn there computers idle time into money. -
getting it to workI've only really ever used the sound cababilities of linux to play MP3s. I think I played a recording of Rishard Stallman in au format once. Point being that I've had numerous problems.
Many times XMMS won't work on my system since I am using Window Maker. It works fine under GNOME, but I don't want to use such a bloated and slow WM. I use a 150 MHz pertium, so its barely good enough to play MP3s. (Listening to MP3s while using Netscape seems to rapidly cause me great amounts of frustation.)
Many times the MP3 sound comes out at half speed or twice the speed. Between kernel re-compiles I'm lucky if it works again at all. I did get it working under 2.3.99-pre3, but that was more flakely then 2.2.14.
Why? Is it the player, the cards or the drivers? Is it going to get better in the future?
I know there are answers to all of these problems, but overall sound seems to be on ongoing issue.

even better
For a change, it appears that it is the exclusivity rather than electronic distribution that is causing the problem.
Better yet, the fact that they are protesting the exclusivity must mean that they wanted to do some electronic distribution themselves!
Many American artists and labels have exclusive arrangements with online sites like emusic, real, etc. and retailers haven't made a peep about it as far as I know

opensrs.com and worldwebserver.comThe OpenSRS model, whereby anybody with a bit of Perl know-how can plug into their API for registering domain names, really opens up a lot of possibilities.
For example, one webhost I use, WorldWebserver.com, offers free domain registration with hosting. But if you're getting, "just domain registration" for $25/year you get one page hosting of one-page site that you can change whenever you want, a catch-all POP3 email box, http logs including http_referer and graphical stats. That's a lot better deal that having your parked domain point at an ad for the registrar!
You can actually do alot with a one-page domain. I've used a few as "storefronts" for affiliate links, or you can just use it for your "front page" and have your other pages on the web space that comes with your dial-up.
Plus the tech support at worldwebserver.com is amazing. Anyway, that's my 2 cents. Oh and they use Apache on Slackware too.

Re:The age limit? In most places minors are not necessarily bound by legal agreements. For example in the USA, minors can pretty much invalidate any contract they enter into by just saying "I invalidate this contract" -- in other places, contracts entered into by minors without their guardians are not valid in the first place. So, in short, you can't really hold a minor to any legal agreement.
Disclaimer: I am not a lawyer and this is probably a gross oversimplification of the matter, but you get the gist of it

CORRECT DATE: the 26thAccording to the announcement on SlashNet, it's on the 26th, and seeing as the 19th has already passed, I'll betting that's the correct one.
Of course the
/. story'll probably be corrected by the time I post this and it'll be moderated "redundant" but, hey, at least I tried to help my fellow slashdotters.

Re:Yeah, but...
Where's the beef? And whats with the non-dairy cheese? This can't possibly qualify as geek food - its not even close to unhealthy enough. We don't drink coffee and Dew and Jolt becuase we're taking care of our bodies!
That's the beauty of it! One of these dilberitos and all that nutritional stuff is taken care of for the day. You can take even less care about what you eat than you do now if you just have one dilberito a day -- all you have to worry about anymore is getting calories when you start to droop. And which foods are the best source of calories?Disclaimer: I am not a nutritionist

Re:re the rantMy thoughts on the rant: the people who are described in the rant are certainly being jerks, but they should not be confused with the people who say "I submitted this story two weeks ago and it was rejected and now it's being posted late." I think the latter complaint does indicate that editorial processes at
/. could use some ironing out (no conspiriacy theory, no attribution of ill will, just a boring technicality :-)This is also a relatively minor complaint.
/. is still probably the most up-to-date place on the net on most of the issues it covers -- but it could be even more so. If /. were able to work out a system whereby if a story is to be posted, it will actually be posted the first time it is submitted, /. would probably have a scoop (or close to it) on with about every storyAnyway, keep up the good work, Rob & co. We do love you (think of it as having 100,000 attentive mothers fussing over you and encouraging you to do what you can to improve

Re:Your few remaining rights have been annihilated
Isn't this just great? A gang of European homosexuals and drug abusers steals (yes, steals) the "good name" of an honest company, and the tort monster chews them up and spits them out. "Sorry guys! You don't own your own name any more!"
Um, have you even read any of the stories on the topic? etoy owned the name years before etoys even existed
