Re:"making the Start Page more personal..."
Same here.
Basically a simple page of frequently viewed sites, grouped by subject matter. A few RSS feeds as well.
Why bother going to
/. when the /. RSS feed says that the're nothing that would interest me.I used to use iGoogle for it. But since that no longer exists, http://www.protopage.com/ makes a fine replacement.

There are all sorts of iGoogle replacements. Just to name a few...

Re:MSN, Netscape, Google, etc.
Aren't there a huge plethora of sites that allow you to basically collect little applets and RSS feeds for a customized home feed?
Probably, yes. When I saw the description I was reminded of PageFlakes, which uses ASP.NET / Atlas:
http://www.pageflakes.com/
(NetVibes appears to be using PHP in combination with an AJAX framework.)
Possibly Slashdot-worthy because NetVibes is getting all the traffic, trouncing PageFlakes and ProtoPage:

Similar product
Protopage is another web 2.0 app that does the same thing as netvibes.

9 Reasons?
I switched and have been happy as a puppy. Let's go through the list:
1) The old theme was already too bulky. The LittleFox theme I installed in its place upgraded without a hitch.
2) If you don't like the feature, you can turn it off..
3) The old Options box was "confusing, poorly designed, and illogically hid important features" too - it's just a matter of getting used to it.
4) I have more than a dozen extensions installed. Seeing as I had upgrade problems in the past (even from 1.5xx -> 1.5yy) - which usually were resolved within days - I was a bit anxious, but alas, all extensions immediately had updated version (except for one I played with myself, obviously); two I had to reinstall manually, the rest upgraded automatically
5) FF1.5x hogged up 200-300 MB on my system. Now is only hogs up around 100MB. In any case, why would a bug 'carried over' be a reason 'not' to upgrade?
6),7),8) didn't happen on my box. CPU hogging actually went down.
9) Webpages (e.g. Protopage or Google homepage) or dedicated software handle RSS feeds far better than 2.0 or 1.5. Both implementations suck - why revert if there are much better alternatives?
The thing that bothered me the most with 1.5x was the memory leak and the accompanying CPU hogging. Both issues virtually disappeared since I upgraded to FF2.0. -
For an alternative take on word processing...
The definition of a word processor needs updating.
One big document is not always how writers work. That's not how I work, that's not how I think. I like to write lots of different fragments, rearrange them, and then piece them all together later.
I use AJAX sticky notes at http://www.protopage.com/ as my word processor.
It doesn't look like a word processor - but then the decades old definition of a word processor I think needs to be updated. -

For Your Clicking Convenience
Netvibes, Protopage, Pageflakes, Live.com, and a bonus Google Personalized
Ah hypertext links. What wonders have Tim Burners Lee wrought. And look, I'm anonymous so no karma whoring. -
Re:What is your point again?
Sounds about like the Google Homepage (google.com/ig) with a few tweaks. Perhaps you should email Google with your ideas. To be specific. it does RSS feeds (no summaries yet, I could see it being an option) had a weather applet thing (you can write your own applets now too) calendar is there too. Another option would be to try this site, http://protopage.com/ . It's somewhat similar to the Google Homepage, except much much more customizable.

Re:Todo Lists application in AJAX
Have you see Protopage? http://www.protopage.com/. It's a heavily AJAXed personal bookmarks and sticky notes organizer that's worth taking a look at.
It has completely free-form panel positioning, so feels like a windows application.
In fact, it's almost a windows desktop replacement.
