Re:I wish my PS3 would play DLNA
There are a few transcoding DLNA servers that make things much nicer (though far from perfect) on the PS3. The benchmark is PS3 Media Server. http://www.ps3mediaserver.org/ (it'll work with other clients, too, but it was designed for transcoding and streaming to the PS3).

Get rid of the Netgear NeoTV box
Your problem with some file formats not playing will more than likely be down to the Netgear box not supporting the wide array of file formats and codec variations you'll find in use on the net. All proprietary players suck because of this. For something cheap and very full featured, try Raspbmc on a Raspberry Pi (with the optional codecs and a remote control). Raspbmc will play absolutely anything you throw at it.
On the server side it's much easier. Either stick with Plex (it will probably be fine streaming to a decent player like Raspbmc / XBMC) or you could try something like MediaTomb or PS3 Media Server, both of which offer transcoding too (for shitty players).

PFF more electro trinkets from Sony YUK
The PS3 is well known for crippled DLNA that does not even accept push as a client, typical Sony crippleware device. So if I take my cell and try to push a pic or a vid to it, it is essentially useless. Sure I can pick up the controller and browse to a DLNA server and then just maybe if the server is written by the Google summer of code guys I just might be able to view my videos and picks but only by browsing to them on the device which sucks big time
Sorry but the crippled DLNA of both the Xbox and the PS3 makes them essentially just what they are toys, not great devices with a future in my living room. Until Microshaft and Sony realize the full potential of these devices and stop crippling what they are easily capable of doing at a software level with DLNA, Samsung smart tvs will keep invading more and more living rooms because they are more capable than these toys! Making users pay another 100 bucks for crippled gimmick screen mirror device like Apple TV is not selling me on Sony products.
Right now I am using a GNU UPNP AV Control Point on my laptop to push to a Samsung while I type this, heck I can even pause and replay or control the TV volume through push DLNA. SONY AND MICROSOFT are missing the boat big time and Samsung is starting to eat their breakfast in the home entertainment field and for good reason!

Re: Yep.
Why does connecting the PS3 to the network require the TV to be connected to the network too? Can't the PS3's TV output be connected to the TV's signal input?
"The PS3 media server project" is a UPnP/DLNA media server originally designed to stream media to PS3s (hence the name). In this case, somebody apparently has the TV directly connecting to the media server software running on their computer, skipping the need for some sort of streamer box.

Re:TV
It's not just for the PS3. Pretty sure the 360 can use it. TV might be able to. PS3, XBMC, and Windows Media Player all can.
Note that it doesn't work so great over wireless with 720p or higher content, so you'll need to have a wired connection (preferably Gigabit, especially if you want to play 1080p video) between the PC and the 360 or TV. Your computer will also need enough horsepower to transcode HD video on the fly, or you're out of luck—I've got an old dual-core Pentium D that does just fine, picked it up used for $100 at a PC recycling place.

Re:MediaTomb - Free UPnP MediaServer
Just make sure you hook up your console with an Ethernet cable - I got a lot of stuttering on fast-paced video over the wireless.
Unfortunately the PS3 network stack has been broken for years. Due to constantly dropping the connection and retransmitting everything multiple times, the PS3 needs about 5x - 10x more bandwidth than the actual video stream has. So you'll need a 100Mbit connection to stream a simple 10Mbit video (almost saturating the connection).
A little more detailed analysis can be found on the ps3mediaserver forums and a lengthy discussion (but no solution) can be found here.

Re:Tales of a windows user using Ubuntu.
Hey Rary. I have posted about this before but you should really give PS3MediaServer a shot. Google for some information about it.
It was originally developed for the PS3 hence the name. However, due to its overwhelming usefulness it has been configured to work with xbox.
It is open-source and maintained very well.

Re:Odd article
And that is why I will not stop using PS3Mediaserver(http://code.google.com/p/ps3mediaserver/). It is by far the best UPnP client for PS3 and is catching on with Xbox360 users as well.
It is an open source project that is updated quite frequently. For anyone still using Tversity I would highly recommend giving this a shot. It transcodes all basically all formats for viewing on the PS3.
The official forum for PS3Mediaserver = http://ps3mediaserver.org/forum/ You can find beta builds here and interesting conversation.
