The microcode feature is there to help you, not enslave you. Silicon is forever. Patching it on your desktop after the fact is a god-send.
Learn some history before you claim to have predicted the future.
With respect; the fight to keep alternative operating systems on PCs and servers is a long and storied history. Through the "hardware partner" cartel, win modems and finally the palladium initiatives culminating in locked bios that required key codes to load an OS. Linux has weathered the lockout exclusion storms that favor Microsoft and to a lesser extent Apple.
The fact that Linux based servers still run huge portions of the servers that power the net is still a problem for Intel, in as much as Linux servers don't suffer the constant upgrade cycles that Windows servers do. Thus reducing the need to change out high horsepower gear every 5 years or so and greatly reducing the software licensing fees for ISPs and web servers. The slow sales of Windows server software to ISP, can easily be helped along by Intel locking down testing of security updates for the Linux kernel. Servers certainly must patch the Intel hell holes that speculative execution has created.
I am posting this from a core 2 duo on a Lenovo T500 that is completely vulnerable to the Intel holes that could melt me down at any time. In fact this aspect has already been exploited on firefox with a malicious javascript that put an old school activex style coded tidbit on my ram that made me kill the firefox pid and do a whois traceroute on the source. It was from a.tk as usual and the kicker was that the.tk redirected to a.ru. I still have the logs and printouts of the hack with bounces.
So yes linux is vulnerable and can be annoyance hacked due to intel's stupid speculative execution coding routines, but fortunately not completely hosed unless you are an idiot and let the attacker(s) in. The sky is always falling with opensource software and using linux as a computer OS. BUT I still refuse to send more ransom money to Microsoft or even the Coca Cola company for that matter to secure my computers for use on the information highway when Intel tries again to start WW111 with us linux users. I must indeed be a deviated_prevert to say this but: NOT ONE DIME MORE TO INTEL OR MICROSOFT I have spent enough securing and replacing their hardware and software over the 30 or so years I have needed it to do any serious work that required internet communications!
You do not own a computer chip you are a slave to the software necessary for it to run which is locked down. HACK ON they deserve what they are about to reap! Reversing chips is how most of the locked down hardware was made available to Linux users for most of the early history of the kernel. Intel now wants a total lock down.... SCREW THEM
The absolute deal breaker for me is that adobe digital editions is not available in a usable.tgz format without using wine to load and register an Adobe Digital ID. My library access to all loaners requires Adobe drm that date expires. So the end result is my wife still requires either a Mac or Windows computer to use the local library for loaners on her Kobo. Either way without an Adobe Digital ID and library access you are stuck with paying through the nose to read just about anything these days. Unless you still go down to the library and take out books on your card.
Funny but a library is just about the only place that you can still read books in peace. Until some illiterate jerk shows up and causes a ruckus trying to find some specific porn or where "can get I a Starbucks coffee in this joint" or is sitting their texting and answering calls like a crazed idiot beside you while you try to research Hector Berlioz treatise on orchestration and compare it to Rimsky and count and sight read the passages in peace!
Shutting down free speech with violence isn't fighting fascism. It IS fascism!
No argument there, that is why eventually reason will prevail because the bigotry, hatred and prejudice that we see from the alt right can shout louder but those who have real intellect can write much more effectively. The pen is much mightier than the sword and must never be silenced!
Trying to make sense out of Nazi actions and ideology is a fool's errand, but it's quite a stretch to imply that sanitizing the media of sex was a "primary" goal. The media was used to serve the regime in any way it could, on an opportunistic basis.
While pornography was officially frowned on, it was really pornography produced by people who weren't in the party. The Schutzstaffel "Hygeine Institute" actually produced pornographic films for use by party members, and titillating images of naked "Aryan" women were common. For the vulgar masses, material that was pornographic by the standards of the day was printed in Der Sturmer -- if often depicted the violation of young Aryan women by Jews, skillfully blending sexual arousal and hate.
It wasn't porn they objected to, it was porn that didn't serve their political ends.
Precisely the point I was getting at and thank you. I was certainly not trying to justify the actions of an obvious dictator which is what the poor unfortunate masses have. China now must endure dictatorship again because in truth there is no real democratic system there to keep the assholes in check. There are only bullets not ballots. I just wonder if the central committee votes with a bowl and black and white balls the same way as the Greeks did. This is the problem with too much centralization of power in one party it is the wet dream of dictators!
Now if the music store conglomerates would only start to sell subscription based large screen e-ink music stand devices and digital sheet music, hell might freeze over. Smart as hell though, of Japanese and Walmart to get on the band wagon with what is the future of consumer book publishing though we will see if this actually takes off and puts a dent in the AMAZON rainforest!
With Mel Bay buying up the publication rights in North America for all the great stuff at Schott and elsewhere you would think that eventually we will see letter sized e-ink music publishing for... well JUST ABOUT EVERY MUSICIAN, SCHOOL ON THE PLANET! OH excuse me then the forest industry would be hurt and Canada might stop causing wild fires in California [/rant]
If you cannot see these connections you are completely out of touch and need to STOP TO READ THE NEWS IN DETAIL.
Sanitizing of all media was a primary goal of Adolf. However I can understand this move from a perspective of historic Chinese social and their moral history. Mao was no saint but he did finally endorse a state set of morals largely based upon a Taoist cultural society. Thus todays leadership must bow to the will of the Chinese people in regard to social interaction morals. Amoral bureaucrats and political figures are a huge problem when a political system allows them to wield power over information, thus the people they are claiming to serve.
Correction and post edit...sorry if that is not possible. change "social and their moral history" to just "social and moral history" to avoid the grammar police coming to my door step. WHICH CAN BECOME A HUGE PROBLEM ON THE NET if is policed for moral correctness!!!

Wish I had mod points left jeff. But then I might be character assigned as being a lefty pinko. As I post this Google just updated the slashdot side panel add with suggestions about which vehicle I might trade for the gas guzzling piece of shit I use to tow my camper. Not to worry though for me financially it is really Canadian softwood lumber that is causing the wild fires in California. NOT my gas guzzling POS that spews more carbon per kilometer driven than 3 of the ones Google just advised me to look into purchasing.
Let the flame wars begin I am going fishing!!!...QUACK I can't go fishing on the west coast any more this year because of the Canadian softwood lumber industry causing wild fires and I am pissed at them not the fossil fuel industry or the auto industry and our stupidity of falling for bullshit mileage claims. I am looking into purchasing a flying saucer that floats but Google is not helping very much in that quest quite yet.
As the plane worshiping tribes of the south pacific once said of us westerners
What is the name of this religion and how do I convert?
Cargo cult
Their understanding of the people on the airplanes is that the planes are just protecting them from harm because they rely upon far too much cargo. The people on the planes are in danger of killing each other if the planes do not protect them and all their cargo. So they worship the airplanes for this reason in their eyes airplanes have a been given a divine spirit regardless of how or who made them. They believe that all material things including that which we modify and create have spirit. And if you fight over cargo or the ownership of any material thing you will become a mad evil spirit after death that needs to be exorcised.
Cargo in their language is simply anything that you must carry around with you as you travel through life. Their lives rely on not having to carry cargo because cargo is shared by all. Materialism is beyond their understanding, the ownership of any material thing of the earth and sky is not a good thing in their eyes.
The beginnings of same type of belief was still present in most of North America until we fucked the natives over, in British Columbia and elsewhere there are still echoes of the potlatch economy. Would that an economy and laws based on potlatch become more advanced. Any economy that is based upon ever cheaper labour, the overconsumption and hording of material things will eventually fall as did Rome. Economic growth has limits that are defined by the availability of food and materials and we are quickly using everything up and are doomed as a civilization for this very reason.
I'll keep my shelves full of books and my AR-15 to protect them.
Thank you, and drive through.
I wish that I could mod you crazy but you do have a bit of a point here. Read Robert Heinlein's take on the future at his most cynical level of red neck inspired madness in Farnham's Freehold. For instance in the plot he has the son of the hero redneck book hording evangelist castrated.
I know guns don't kill people etcetera on and on until they all go bang for real and end our propensity for hording as well as the insanity of consumerism run amok. Faults which causes in the primitive species Homo sapiens the penchant for partaking in wars of acquisition rather than the potlatches we were once commanded to have.
As the plane worshiping tribes of the south pacific once said of us westerners "the airplane people carry too much cargo and that is why they are crazy and kill each other"
However everything is going to be fine, our species replacements are all safe and sound under area 51 waiting for the storm to pass. The reliable and humane gray aliens are completely in control and in charge of the operation to rid the planet of the plague of primitive Homo sapiens. FYI our replacements are a very hairy peaceful race of vegetarians that have life spans measured in the of thousands of years. They were seen infrequently in the mountains and wooded places all over this planet until very recently. So rest assured your AR-15 might come in useful very soon.
With real programmers the only important "bench marks" are the ones on their butts after sitting for hours doing the optimization testing and bug fixes. Bench marks can be similar to "fake news" if not done on low powered equipment as well as silicon rockets, that said I don't think Pale Moon even with no script has a blue moons chance in hell at outperforming Lynx on my P11 running on the latest kernel on Slackware in straight Enlightenment xWindows with 256 meg of ram on a 3 gig 5400 rpm drive.
I would give it a try if I had time to spare. It took me almost a month and a mountain of potato chips just to compile the kernel.
As miniature mechanical devices advance so could the medium(s) and methods upon which information is written. Tape for audio and video recording purposes still produce the best analogue of what the sensing device sends. The truth is that microphone technology has not had major advancement because the diaphragm used to create devices like Neumann professional mics have been around for a great many years. The technology used in the production of mic diaphragms has not advanced.
Optical sensing has advanced greatly but professional camera lens technology has not. If you really look at some of the great images taken by Ansel Adams you see the levels of resolution he used to create his photographic art, digital up until now has paled in comparison.
In the same vein, some of the great recordings done in the in the late 1950 and early 1960 by DGG, Columbia Master Works and Phillips optical audio to film tape you see the same quality of detailed sound that is only starting to become possible now with digital recording.
The combination of great analogue tech that is not stagnant with digital is the way forward. For instance advanced large size reflex ribbon mics with miniature electronics are just starting to happen and become affordable for the pro as are large size high density and sensitivity ccd based cameras that can take large lenses and produce close to what Ansel Adams did. Ansel was certainly not alone and owed a dept to some of the great photographers that showed the way some of whom were American. Here we can clearly see that fine grained analogue photography was starting to make leaps and bounds until the first world war really screwed up things for a while. France, England, Germany started to take the technology and keep it secretly in the military. The same bullshit happened during the second world war and during the cold war. Both advanced miniaturized audio recording technology and miniaturized high resolution camera technology has if anything been held back by war.
The great analogue technologies which ampex helped introduce to the public, essentially during times of peace, are very important and the sign is a reminder of this fact. It should stay or at least not fade into the dust of what we perceive as progress! If the young of today and our antecedents cannot learn from the past then American society is doomed.
How do you not bend spaghetti evenly from both ends? Is this one of those one hand clapping koans?
Take a stick of spaghetti into outer space and in weightlessness with no atmosphere shake it like a conductors baton. The energy imparted to the end of the pasta will cause the stick to bend progressively in a wave. If the energy in a shake is at frequencies the stick will break at the harmonic nodes of the frequency in relation to the mass/length of the pasta. In space a whole forest of pasta trees can fall and no one will hear them break.
Without electronic energy, no message could be sent by the radio to the Earth.
I suspect that its supply uses radioactive fuel as the uranium or the plutonium,
It does read the wiki! It has primary retractable panels as well as one that can be cooled during the hottest part of the missions during the closest approach(s) to the sun. The shielding used is absolutely crucial to the design. If there are any faults in the autonomous systems that safeguard the probe then the probe will be a one shot deal and would become a fast fry fly by better named Icarus. The software and hardware used for autonomous control is ground breaking and hopefully will not all be kept under wraps by the military, I am sure there are many more autonomous systems that are under secret development elsewhere for Donald's new "space force" but the ones Nasa is using for this probe should be public domain and available to industry other than the US military.
The five main goals are listed with acronyms one of which is rather comical in as much that it is headed and labeled as ISIS.
Integrated Science Investigation of the Sun (ISIS)— This investigation will measure energetic electrons, protons and heavy ions. The instrument suite is composed of two independent instruments, EPI-Hi and EPI-Lo. The Principal investigator is David McComas, at the Princeton University.
Rather ironic because Isis was the bringer of the the god Osiris and today has been twisted into other much more sinister context. Must give some of the religious right in Washington the willies looking at what Nasa is doing with this probe. Lets just hope that the probe doesn't pull a budgetary Icarus on Nasa before all the really important data is in. This mission is one that makes a great deal of sense from a scientific stand point and could very well deliver field data that will be ground breaking and a technological gold mine.

He has a plan for all of us and yesterday was this guy's time to go.
Let us hope you are correct. The current state of the world is making more otherwise sane individuals take their own lives. Indeed we all need to become more gracious if we are to find peace and sanity in this God forsaken time. Suicide is not painless, in as much that it is a sin that harms deeply those who love you.
PS: it is a misnomer that GOD is a man, the real GOD IS ANDROGYNOUS and without sex organs or the need for them. As indeed is real love.
Yes, but not when you have ppl like Chanos who is manipulating the market.
Wash your mouth out with soap, you liberal democrat hippy regulatory evangelist! GREED IS GOOD short sellers are doing GODS WORK!!! The crash of 2008 was good for America, it put more money in the hands of the righteous, as did Saint Donald when he went bankrupt buying casinos. The number of individuals who got rich off his casino buying spree is rivaled only by the buying spree of the first sainted American organized crime sock puppet, Howard Hughes. Learn how the financial system actually works before you criticize the leadership!
'destroys all life on the planet'? A bit of hyperbole, as life will survive global warming. It won't look like it does now, and we might not survive. But, oh well, life will go on, even if we don't.
Thank you, that was my point. However study of the mechanisms of the sun is a worthy goal even if Nasa is having some trouble getting it's rocks off again.
The planned velocity and spiral decent of the craft during the mission is a very interesting change from the norm and might yield unexpected results. How a high velocity downward spiral orbital trajectory of the sun will effect electronics and communications is one aspect of this mission that might become fascinating. We have never tried to communicated over the radio spectrum with a vehicle in exactly this situation before. If there are time distortions of the signals sent from a the space craft spiraling down into the gravity well of sun at high velocity then other aspects of gravitational physics might become a little more clear. This probe might very well yield some very interesting results that go well beyond the original goals of the project. This is why science experiments in space are so important to our future as a species.
if we are indeed at the start of a quiet period of solar activity
The sun is in a "minimum" since about 15 years...
Thank you for pointing that out. I was and am playing devils advocate here as you should have already guessed. There is no evidence that a Maunder minimum caused the little ice ages of the late Renaissance and Baroque era. So I spouted out a pile of complete bullshit for this very reason. However we are in for one hell of a rough ride because of anthropogenic climate change and any study of the potential of solar radiation and the fact that predictable changes in activity from the sun might change things for us in unexpected ways is good science IMO.
Who knows there might very well be a mechanism to protect and save some of the planetary life from the fossil fuel industry of humans somewhere hidden in the chaos of probabilities. A strange self fulfilled mechanism of evolution to stop the destruction of life by a greed motivated intelligent species like us humans before the said species destroys all life on the planet. Indeed the species Homo sapiens might not be welcome on Noah's ark this time around we had our chance and we fucked it up big time!
Sending out this probe was a great choice for Nasa and the climate scientists that need a better understanding of the relationship between the suns output and our climate. It seems the only hope we have of slowing global warming is a period of lower output from the sun.
Then there is the flip side of the equation: If we are indeed at the start of a Maunder minimum then DRILL BABY DRILL! Frac the shit out of all the shale until the water in our farmer's houses explode! We are going to need the oil companies for the same reason Hitler needed to turn south in the Ukraine. And a presence in North Africa with control of the Suez
All the bullshit I just spouted aside, if we are indeed at the start of a quiet period of solar activity then the benefit may indeed be a moderation of our climate and a return, however brief, to a semblance of the climate conditions and annual cycles we had only 30 years ago. Even if we dump a butt tonne more CO2 into the atmosphere by burning millions of tonnes of fossil fuels to compensate for killer winter cold especially in Northern Sates and Canada, a series of years as cold as the little ice age of the Baroque era will only be survived with the increased use of fossil fuels. The numbers freezing in the streets of Europe and North America will be astounding, during the little ice age it was common to find the poor and their children frozen to death outside or even inside the churches.
The data from this probe will help tell the tale, if there are any of us left to crunch it.
If this theory of rogue waves is true, then there should be numerous "Bermuda Triangles" scattered around the world, where storms congregate.
And indeed there are. There is folk lore of sea creatures and mysterious gods that swallow up ships all over the planet from the Sea of Japan to the Straits of Gibraltar. The only mystery that is still baffling as hell about the Bermuda triangle is the squadron of 5 avengers that have yet to be found on the sea bottom. That one can only be explained by really bad navigation and rookie pilots not telling their squadron leader that they were way the hell of course and heading for an ocean ditch situation out of radio range in the middle of no where after sunset. Like many otherwise good Americans they were all ready to follow their leader even if the guy was completely and absolutely wrong.
Rogue waves are more interesting than the original article.
In deep water rogue waves fall into two categories. There are areas in the ocean where two currents meet, for example along the east coast of Southern Africa. This can result in increased incidence of rogue waves in those areas. These are quite well known to mariners. But the others are what are sometimes called "Schrodinger waves".
With Schrodinger waves it is always the death of the ships cat that causes the sinking, at least in the Bermuda triangle.

Why this probe has not solar panels?

"Essentially, this data mapped a very large scale AWS cloud infrastructure deployment, with 41 different columns on individual systems, as well as summarized and modeled data on totals, averages, and other calculated fields," the cybersecurity firm said. The open bucket, called "abbottgodaddy," also included what the company believes to be business information relating to GoDaddy and Amazon AWS' relationship, including rate negotiations.
This is why science experiments in space are so important to our future as a species.
if we are indeed at the start of a quiet period of solar activity The sun is in a "minimum" since about 15 years ...
