Works on Verions 1.5-2.71 NO GTA REQUIRED
Ok, for all those people who say this isnt possible..
Sony announced it is releasing its own PS1 Emulator for PSP by the end of this year, with a PSP firmware update. Prbly around PS3 launch time, along with the GPS and Camera.
http://www.engadget.com/2006/03/15/psp-gets-gps-an d-camera-add-ons-video-chat-and-voip-and-media/
Someone has been working on this homebrew version for a long time and decided to release it.
And to correct the people above me, YOU NO LONGER NEED GTA:LCS IN ORDER TO USE HOMEBREW ABOVE PSP VERSION 1.5. There is a new exploit that works all the way up to 2.71. No GTA Required.
http://www.pspupdates.com/ has all the information on the latest PSP stuffs. -
More Information
I've been following the entire situation as I maintain TehSkeen.net and have first hand experience of what went down. Yoshi did rippoff a bunch of people using PayPal and stole code. http://www.tehskeen.net/ http://www.pspupdates.com/ http://www.psp-spot.com/ http://www.wab.com/ All of these have all of the resources you need to verify my claims including information on contacting the author of the downgrader and the people who assisted him with it.

Working link.
It's http://pspupdates.com/, no dash. and psp-spot.com is having server issues due to the demand for the 2.0 downgrader.
Yoshi has been accused of stealing code in the past, aswell as stealing the donation money. But who knows what's true. From what i saw of him on irc, he's an arsehole. -
ALL LIES
According to PSPUpdates, SonyXTeam has NOTHING to do with this. It is the sole creation of Team MPH.
SonyXTeam is comprised of former members of Team WAB, a group that conned hundreds of people out of their money.
WAB said that they would be releasing a downgrader on September 1, and opened up a Paypal account for donations.
Then members of WAB claimed to have been arrested, and they claimed that their hard drive crashed. If anyone came on their IRC server and asked about the downgrader, they were kicked off. Then the team split up, and the "main coder" of the supposed downgrader went over to SonyXTeam.
This coder, Yoshihiro, is well known throughout the XBox scene as a fake who stole the code of others and claimed it as his own. He is doing the same thing here with the real downgrader. -
Re:Is firmware 1.5x cracked yet?Now again, what if he wants DS specific games?
Then he'd have bought a DS already and this wouldnt be an issue.
how can you prevent a 1.5 PSP from becoming a 1.51 or later PSP if all future titles force a firmware upgrade?
Bigger means more stuck pixels
Bigger screen also means harder to notice those smaller dead pixels.

Re:Just say "no"...
the blockbusters here rent where i live umd movies and games. they have been renting them since at least as far back as may/june.
also, you can rent them from www.gamefly.com and a few other places, if you are more a www.netflix.com person than a www.blockbuster.com person.
as for playing them on a regular sized tv screen: http://www.pspupdates.com/2005/09/teamxtender-upda te.html there you go... its not the most elegant solution; it requires some weirdness with the faceplate. but its a proof of concept. also, when look at the link above, keep in mind that the video on the screen is distorted due to the fact that they are displaying 16:9 content on a 4:3 screen. if you set the psp to 'display: original', it would display properly. -
Curiously...
The Japanese 2.0 firmware was also updated slightly. However, it still shares the same version number as the update released earlier.
More info here: PSP Updates
Oh, and if you updated to the Japanese 2.0 firmware already, you cannot update to the US version released today. -

Sorry, we're all sold out of PSPs with 1.50 FW
PSP units currently available at retail do not support homebrew apps. Units with a "B" on the UPC have 1.51 firmware, which has increased protection against execution of unsigned code. Units with no letter or an "A" on the UPC have 1.50 firmware, which has been cracked, but retailers are likely to be sold out of those. Watch the price of "A" units soar on eBay.

Re:Not a surprise
What's more interesting to me these days is that Nintendo's hand-held console dominance now stands a real chance of being usurped (by the PSP) for the first time since they entered the market with the original Game Boy. Others such as Sega and Atari tried but failed due to the fact that Nintendo was king of home (TV) consoles at the time, but now Nintendo is limiting itself to its more niche audience with the (comparatively gimmicky) DS and could be seriously threatened by the PSP's more broad appeal.
Ummmm...the DS is far from being challenged by the PSP. Read some of the stats. The DS is selling more then the PSP and PS2 combined.
Big reasons? Price, game availability and titles. Also, having a PSP is nerve racking as you constantly fear you're gonna break the 400$ machine(I know, I have one). The DS on the other hand, could probably be thrown down some stairs with no damage(I dropped mine down some actually).
