Swindler's Lust

Public Enemy also made their latest album available exclusively available for download from the web almost a month before it was released on cd or vinyl.

The "missing" Public Enemy album that was removed from the website by the label and never released subsequently was mainly an album of remixes and updated versions of old PE tracks. Some very good stuff, I've downloaded a good part of it and enjoyed hearing classics updated to reflect the music as well as the political climes of 1998, which was when it came out.

The original poster may be talking about the fact that on the public enemy site there are songs for download in mp4 format.

Wired Magazine has this interview with him. This is from March 1999. Also, kind of offtopic, but did you know his position on the MS trial "When someone comes along and dominates an industry, of course you get a whole bunch of losers screaming, hoping somehow they can beat 'em down. Show me a good loser, and I'll show you a loser. Bill Gates is Michael Jordan" and on software pirates: "To the pirates, I say the more the merrier. Success comes from the fans first - if someone is going to pirate something of mine, I just have to make sure to do nine or ten new things. I mean, you can't download me" You might want to check Public Enemy's website too.

He (Chuck D) seems to have a lot of interesting opinions about online music distribution and the like. He tried to give an entire album away over the internet, since his label (def jam) was holding back on releasing it. There was a big fight w/ the label, and Public Enemy ended up leaving the label. His website, http://www.public-enemy.com has a bunch of mp3s and stuff, as well as essays written by Chuck, about this kind of stuff. Pretty neat.

Q: What about the Microsoft trial - should they shut down Mr. Bill, or let him play his game?

Is this where I'm supposed to say "Don't believe the hype" again? We put pop stars on pedestals and expect them to put as much thought into everything as they put into their money-making endeavors. You people think he has a Debian box or something? The PE site runs on NT, methinks.

Actually they also released the single "Swindlers Lust" both as "mp4" and (later) as mp3. There were a lot of angry messages (most of them were prolly from /. ;) at the "enemy board" when they first released the single as mp4 only, and I think that's the reason why the also released an mp3.

It's sad how people don't really realise that mp4 is not an ISO standard or any standard. I was just reading posts on public-enemy and everyone seems to be under the impression that mp4 was next that has happend to digital music.
