Re:I have to agree with kdawson...
Thanks for playing, but try again. The police have no obligation to protect you. They do sometimes, but they aren't required to.

Re:Kid won't know what to do when an adult
The job of the police is only to enforce the law after it has been broken, see Warren v DC. Also, since that site will probably make you cry: Try this one.

Re:Only 1.2k Arrests!
Police are not here to protect you, nor do they have to. See Warren v DC, or a whole slue (sp?) of cases from the supreme court. The police are there to enforce laws after the fact, and that is their ONLY duty.

Re:OK, so first step
Firearms can be a deterrent, as shown by the Atlanta suburb of Kennesaw. In 1982 they enacted a law requiring heads of households to keep at least one firearm in their homes. From 1982 to 1997 there were only two murders, both with knives. Residential burglary went down, as well as other violent crime rates.
If you were a criminal and knew that there was a good chance the home owner was armed, wouldn't you look for a different county? -
Re:While I'm none too sympathetic with gun controlIn general, anyone that carries for self defense knows how to handle the situation. Aim, shoot, kill, once the threat is gone, set the weapon down and call 911. Simple and easy.
As you may or may not know, the police have no obligation to protect you. Their job is to show up afterwards and assign blame. The courts have ruled this over and over. No one is responsible for your personal saftey but you.
heres a little light reading if you disagree:

Re:An alternative
We hire police to protect us from criminals. Without that, you yourself will have to carry a weapon, and defend yourself.
Heh. If you think that police are hired to protect us from criminals, you're sadly deluded. The history of court rulings has established over and over again that the police have no obligation to protect anyone. The police are there to catch criminals after they commit a crime. If you're the victim, and you have no way to defend yourself, tough.

For all who say "the police will protect you"
You better think again about not needing a gun...
This article has numerous references to court cases saying essentially the police do not have any legal obligation to protect you if you call them when you're in trouble. Just look at what happens when law and order break down due to natural catastrophes, and say to yourself "who is going to protect me"? Not the police!
