This is no longer the case. None of the new phones use a Verizon ui any longer, the phones aren't locked down, you can use most any bluetooth profile that any other carrier allows. VzNavigator is one thing that you aren't going to get away from without getting one of the android phones, but you're locked into similar things with all carriers. With the Droid and Droid Eris, you get Google Maps navigation (free!) which works very well. Also, if you don't like the phones or apps available, you can use any (unlocked) cdma phone with them. Verizon has been opening up quite a lot in the past few years. Before you start knocking them, do a little research.
And as for GSM being so great, ask a Verizon customer how many dropped calls they've had in the past month, year, two years, what have you. Chances are you'll get an answer of maybe zero to two. Ask an AT&T customer the same question, they've likely lost count. If you're just looking for a SIM-based phone, they are moving to roll out LTE very soon.
He has been a republican for a long time, and the republican party has historically been very pro-liberty, pro-limited government, but that has all changed in the mainstream of the party. There is still a large contingent of libertarian republicans, they just aren't currently the mainstream. See http://www.rlc.org/
Now, I'm not a republican and never have been, I've always been a Libertarian.
the term libertarian isn't exclusive to the Libertarian Party. RP is a "little L" libertarian.
The term libertarianism usually refers to a political philosophy maintaining that all persons are the absolute owners of their own lives, and should be free to do whatever they wish with their persons or property, as long as they allow others the same liberty.
We fund China by borrowing trillions of dollars from them to fund our wars. That money is borrowed with interest, we are paying them billions just so we can fight an unconstitutional and unjustified war.
I've had similar issues with a Compaq N620c while installing Gentoo, although the issue was that the default kernel on the boot CD didn't have the proper ACPI drivers (fan, mostly) to keep it cool. For those unfamiliar with the N610c, it is a great laptop built around a DESKTOP processor, with the hard drive located right next to the processor. Needless to say, they don't exactly run cool, however, like most all intel-based systems, there are some great thermal protections even if certain things aren't working right. it gets too hot, it shuts off before anything gets damaged. Not ideal, but better than burning up.
On a different note, a standard distro (not "roll-your-own" like Gentoo) never had any problems running on the laptop. So there is no reason to think that an up-to-date commercial distro on a brand new laptop that was designed to run said distro would have any problems whatsoever...
or, at most grocery stores and nearly every mcdonalds in the US if not the world, they have rental vending machines. You swipe your card, pick the movie you want, and $1-1.50 a day you have a movie, take it home, copy.... erm, I mean watch it, then return it, and you're golden. Very good alternative to Blockbuster since the prices have gone up to around $5-$6 each.
Now I have to say, I do download sometimes, the only reason is it's either something I'd like to see but don't want to spend $20+ on a night at the movies and I'd rather not wait for it to come out on DVD (which I tend to buy, so they really aren't losing any money from me) or it has been out of the theaters for a while and hasn't come out on DVD.
The AC reply to this is perfect, it had been proven wrong on mythbusters. Explosive decompression in an aircraft is impossible with a handgun. And besides, that's why they make frangible ammo.
I have two things I want to say/ask... Basically what you're saying is, that in a free market, there are no win-win situations? That there is always a winner and always a loser?
Didn't you say you're an anarchist? It seems to me that everything you have said so far is the exact opposite of annarchism, in fact it is a lot closer to socialism or even closer to communism.
Markets are a form of voluntary cooperation, competitors cannot use force to increase their power, but must cooperate with others for mutual gain. Their cooperation leads to mutually productive activities. Corporations have no real power, only the government has power. The Libertarian philosophy on free markets (which, btw, you have somehow lumped together as a single entity. The Libertarian philosophy and the free-market philosophy are not one in the same, although Libertarian principals are heavily based on the free market) is that any group of people should be free to trade with any other group of people without interference, either from the government or anyone else. A "free market" by definition is a market without force or fraud. The governments role in a free market is to operate a court system only to enforce contracts voluntarily entered into between parties, and the settlement of disputes.
What I can't figure out is why you have such a low impression of Libertarians in general. In my experiance, it is next to impossible to stereotype them, Libertarians come from all backgrounds, they are all different in every possible way. They are anywhere from dirt poor to insanly wealthy, high-school drop-outs to PHDs. Christians to muslims, to atheists. The only common thing that I have ever seen in a group of Libertarians is that they are generally very intelligent and open-minded, which goes directy against your assumptions. Maybe my experiances aren't the norm, but I have no reason to beleive they aren't.
It amazes me how much people just don't understand libertarian principals, and then bash them because of the lack of understanding.
The government is inefficient, and if you don't believe that, you're in denial. Just look at all the "wars on" anything. The government throws trillions of dollars (which are stolen, for all intents and purposes) at things that people perceive as problems. Some really are, some aren't. The war on drugs creates more drug use, the war on terror creates more terrorists, the war on poverty, causes more poverty. We should declare war on some endangered species, maybe we'd have more of those as well...
The point is, there is nothing the government does that private companies or individuals couldn't do cheaper and better. Libertarians don't believe in no government (that's the anarchist's, which aren't as crazy as you may think), but they do believe in less government, an extremely limited government.
The basic libertarian principals are that you do whatever you want, and I'll do whatever I want, and as long as I don't harm you and you don't harm me, everything is good. The only legitimate functions of government are the protection of the three fundamental rights of life, liberty and property.
I'm assuming you missed the point of the articles. Banning guns would make no difference. "Massacres" only account for less than 1 percent of shootings in the US. Banning guns in the UK has only increased gun violence. It has been shown over and over that restrictive gun laws have the complete opposite effect on crime that they are supposed to have. The only people you will disarm with these laws are law-abiding citizens. Criminals do not care if it is illegal, they will do it anyway, and they have more of an incentive if they know their victims are less likely to fight back.
If you look at areas of the US with strict gun control vs. areas with less restrictive gun control, you can see that violent crime is a lot lower in the least restrictive areas compared to the more restrictive. Think about it, if you're a criminal, would you want to rob/rape someone that *may* be armed or someone that you know is a lot more likely to be unarmed because it is illegal? You're armed, because you of course don't care what the law says.... you're a criminal, remember?
In areas where you are "allowed" to carry concealed, even if you choose not to, you still receive the indirect benefits. Criminals don't know whether or not you are someone that will choose to defend yourself or just be another victim. I agree with you saying that we should just say it is a price worth paying, because it is. Our country was founded on a few principals that are as important today as they were 231 years ago. The right to self defense is not granted to you by the government, it is a natural (god-given, if you so believe) right. Guns are just tools that can be used to defend your life and property, and like any tool it can be mis-used, but either way it takes a person to do so. To quote Bejamin Franklin, "Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety."
news programs were claiming that the Clinton weapons ban that expired would have prevented him from killing so many people because of the "high-capacity" magazines.
First off, the Clinton Ban didn't do much of anything at all. Secondly, the high-capacity magazines would have been available regardless, since it only banned the MANUFACTURE of new ones. The fact is, all the AW ban did was make it illegal to manufacture a *SCARY LOOKING* gun, and has nothing to do with anything manufactured prior to that.
During the ban, I purchased a Yugoslavian SKS, complete with bayonet and grenade launcher. Since it was manufactured in the 1960s, it was in no way, shape, or form illegal. I had also purchase an SLR-95 (A Bulgarian-made AK47 with a milled receiver) with a thumbhole stock, which was manufactured during the ban. No pistol grip and came with a 10-round magazine, thus completly legal. I picked up several 30-round magazines and a 100-round drum magazine, also completely legal as they wer manufactured pre-ban. Put them together, you have a semi-automatic AK47 capable of firing 100 rounds without a reload or a magazine change. And, all legal. So, did the SAW ban do anything at all? No!
In general, anyone that carries for self defense knows how to handle the situation. Aim, shoot, kill, once the threat is gone, set the weapon down and call 911. Simple and easy.
As you may or may not know, the police have no obligation to protect you. Their job is to show up afterwards and assign blame. The courts have ruled this over and over. No one is responsible for your personal saftey but you.
Isn't it strange that so few guns are sold on www.ebay.co.uk? Could it be something to do with the fact the uk has a sane gun law? But of course, this is slashdot.org, so it must be ebay's fault. After all, slashdot is more than happy to accept complete responsibility for any comments posted here.
Ted Nugent has a little more common sense than Jack Thomson when it comes to finding things that contributed to this event...
You say that like it's surprising. Ted Nugent is a smart person, with plenty of common sense. He scares some people because of his strong beliefs and radical ways he presents them, but his beliefs are based on facts, things that have been proven over and over. Jack Thompson on the other hand doesn't bother looking at facts, just plays off assumptions and fears, much like the Brady campaign.
Ted Nugent is absolutely correct in everything he said in that article. Gun laws are nothing more than victim disarmament laws. If someone is going somewhere with the intention of shooting, hurting, killing someone with a gun, they aren't going to see the sign that says "No Guns, Knives, etc." and say "oh, I can't bring my gun here, so I can't go shoot this person."
All you do when you create a "Gun-Free Zone" is ensure the criminals that no one will be able to defend themselves. It pisses me off that everyone started talking about more gun control after this happened. It was already illegal for him to have it there and shoot those people. Did it stop him? Not at all. Would he have made it past the first 2 victims if students were allowed to carry firearms on campus? Hell no.
The issue here is that Microsoft basically forced all the major PC manufacturers to put vista on every new PC. Are any of these companies using them internally? I don't believe so (and I know for sure about at least one). Their IT departments see this as a HUGE headache. Most large companies didn't even move to XP SP2 for 6 months or more after it was released because of compatability issues.
M$ saw the whole thing as a way to get a large amount of market penetration extremely quickly, and so far it's working. Vista isn't as horrible as many people make it out to be, and it's not like it's difficult to just install XP onto a brand new PC when you get it home, especially for the people (geeks) that are the ones complaining about it.
most of the issues that people complain about (You are ranting [Cancel] [Allow]) are exactly the things everyone suggests about every other OS. I mean look at Linux, you should never run it as root, and if you don't, you have to elevate your privileges to do a lot of stuff (su or sudo). That is the exact same thing that Vista does. First Windows isn't secure enough, then it's too secure...
For way too long M$ has erred on the side of compatibility and they have finally decided to make something far more secure than any version previous. You can't run some piece of software that you used to be able to? More than likely it was poorly designed and they will come out with a fix or a patch so it doesn't have to have full access to every part of the OS. In the meantime, google it, there is more than likely a workaround, probably just telling it to rus as administrator is enough. You don't like all the fancy interface features? disable them. You absolutly hate Vista? install XP, Linux, *BSD, Win2k/98/95/3.11/FreeDOS/whatever.
You don't like having to pay for Vista if you're only going to reformat and install XP? Build it yourself, or buy it from a local computer builder. They will let you choose whatever OS you want, or even let you buy it without an OS.
I had used vonage many times for Faxing, and it's even possible to get a dedicated fax line with Vonage. I have been using an old HP fax that was being tossed at work, brought it home, hooked it up to my router, worked flawlessly. Used it probably 100 times without a hitch on my standard voice line.
I have since switched to Verizon Voicewing (I figure they won't sue themselves...) and haven't tried to fax with it yet, but I don't expect any problems.
now this is two different things... as a visitor to the US, you have the same basic rights as any other individual, as long as you don't want to buy a gun or something (although we're slowly losing that right as citizens ourselves).
If you're in your own country or any country other than the US, that's a different story altogether...

Can you get replacement Li-Ion batteries for the many HPaq PDAs out there other than the current model/phone models?
HP/Compaq iPaq batteries are very easy to get ahold of for even the 1st generation. You can get them directly from HP or even battery stores like Batteries Plus and the like.
I had to get one for my H3800. They are pretty useless with CE, but put Linux on one and it'll bring new life to it.
> - the Xbox 360 is HUGE, even more so with its huge power supply brick
Compared to ? It is smaller than the PS3 for example.
> - the Xbox 360 is extremely more noisy than an AppleTV, DVD player, set-top digital decoder box and HDTV, together.
The Xbox 360 is only noisy when its DVD player is running.
Ummm, did I miss something? My 360 is quite a bit smaller than any of the rest of my AV equipment, and the power brick can easily be hidden under or behind a media tower/entertainment center/whatever you use. I have never had any issues with noise, and I watch a LOT of DVDs on it now that I have a 47" 1080p LCD TV and it upscales standard DVD's. the only time it gets noisey enough to where I notice it, is loading screens while playing games, the drive speeds up to load the content and there's usually no audio playing at all.
Maybe I'm different than most people, especially since I spend a lot of time in a data center (VERY loud) and I'm just used to a lot of noise, but in a real world application of watching a movie, especially a streamed or downloaded movie, you should never be able to hear much of anything.
I think that pretty much everyone is missing the point. the original intended use for iTunes video downloads was for people to download the content and stick it on their iPods. Limited storage and small screen means there's no reason to have anything higher than 480p video. On a 3 or 4-inch screen there is no way you can tell the difference between 480p and 720 or 1080p.
Anyway, the point is, compression is NOT the issue here, it's resolution. Like it or not, iTunes video at 640x480 is the same resolution and close to the same quality of standard DVD. I'm not sure if ATV upscales the lower resolution to 720p or not, but if I play a video in iTunes full screen and play a DVD in full screen on the same PC, I can not tell a difference in quality. Remember, H.264 is an MPEG4 format, very similar to DivX or XviD, both of which allow for very good quality in a high-compression format. Dish network made the switch from MPEG2 to MPEG4 on their HD-DVRs because they could record a lot more in a smaller space at the same quality.
I don't believe there is a hardware issue here, I just think that the marketplace (itunes) needs to catch up before you can make any real judgements about it. As soon as 720p videos become commonplace on iTunes, I believe ATV will be an awesome piece of electronics. Until then, my XBOX 360 does a better job at a comparable price.
think we should stop subsidizing people who live in the fucking desert and Hurricane-prone regions.
We should stop subsidizing anything anywhere. The federal government has no right to take my hard earned money and give it to anyone else. Period. It is theft and I am 100% against it.
The only legitimate role of government is to protect people's personal and economic freedoms.
And you can look at this one. If you have a knee-jerk reaction to pass off any evidence that is contrary to your own beliefs, calling anyone that disagrees with your view an industry shill, then nothing I say is going to make a difference. I think it's sad that environmentalism has become a religion, instead of a science.
I believe that environmentalism is a good thing, we shouldn't pollute and destroy the environment. However, what most environmentalists today suggest is in essence communism, they are completely anti-capitalist.
Carbon dioxide is NOT toxic at all, the only problem with CO2 is that it displaces oxygen. it's not even technically a pollutant. It's not that great of a greenhouse gas even, water vapor is a far better greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide. This article explains that the cause/effect relationship of CO2 and temperature increase are inverse to popular belief:
Carbon dioxide levels have indeed changed for various reasons, human and otherwise, just as they have throughout geologic time. Since the beginning of the industrial revolution, the CO2 content of the atmosphere has increased. The RATE of growth during this period has also increased from about 0.2% per year to the present rate of about 0.4% per year, which growth rate has now been constant for the past 25 years. However, there is no proof that CO2 is the main driver of global warming. As measured in ice cores dated over many thousands of years, CO2 levels move up and down AFTER the temperature has done so, and thus are the RESULT OF, NOT THE CAUSE of warming. Geological field work in recent sediments confirms this causal relationship. There is solid evidence that, as temperatures move up and down naturally and cyclically through solar radiation, orbital and galactic influences, the warming surface layers of the earth's oceans expel more CO2 as a result.
If you read the entire article you can see that what most of the "we're all going to die" is completely overblown.
Android is open, the Google apps pack, including the GPS, is licensed on top.
