Re:qBittorrent
"The qBittorrent project aims to provide an open-source software alternative to ÂTorrent"
Works better for me. Ignore currency miner appplications wearing the skin of well known products, and use community-focued open source tools wherever you can.
ugh.. oh man but I prefer the uTorrent UI so much. I've tried so many alternative BT applications and they all suck at having a tight UI except for utorrent even with the bloody ads that for whatever reason pimp my utorrent isn't removing anymore.

There's no need to visit a site when your client has built in search across whatever you want to configure it with as well as sensible defaults and no malware included (I'm looking at YOU SourceForge).
I highly recommend qBittorrent for that, as one reason among many. I've used it for years and is the best client I've encountered.
Also, who visiting a torrent site doesn't use ad blocking? Why would you do that to yourself?

Move on, the show's over
uTorrent alternatives you should have moved on to a long time ago; cross platform clients, with clickable links for the lazy:

Re:Another piece of software to uninstall
Go grab qBittorrent instead. Free, open-source, not owned by the Bittorrent corporation.

Why is uTorrent so popular still?
I used uTorrent when it was fairly new and it was excellent but in this day and age does it offer anything versus the number of matured open-source alternatives out there? I'm really asking if it has some special sauce that gives it an edge. When it was released one could look past it's closed source nature since it made it's mark being lightweight yet feature packed. Once the major update that brought advertising on-board I saw no reason to use it anymore.
I've been using qBittorent for a couple years and it gives me all the relevant functionality without the mess as well as Transmission QT for Windows and Deluge, I can see no reason to use uTorrent when it's been shown repeatedly to be scum-ware. -
Alternatives are available...
When they started pulling this crap I switched to something else that apes the older, simpler, cleaner versions: http://www.qbittorrent.org/

qTorrent looks like a good alternative
qTorrent was suggested on other tech community web sites as an alternative to uTorrent when this story broke. It's open-source, multi-platform and looks polished and is ad-free. Like uTorrent, it claims a small footprint. Is anyone already using it?

Remember Azereus? That was a popular platform until its owners bloated it with crap that no one wanted. They could now serve as that demotivational poster of a wrecked ship with the byline: "It may be your purpose in life is to act as a warning to others." uTorrent were going down that path, so it's encouraging to see them realise playing chicken with a lighthouse is not a wise surivival strategy. I never understood the point of 'apps' in uTorrent. What's next: 'apps' for Microsoft Word? 'apps' for 'apps'? -

Re:What's available for Bitttorrent clients nowada
I switched to qBittorrent. It's open source, uses Qt4, and it looks similar to older versions of uTorrent.

Qbittorrent is an excellent, GPL bittorrent client that is fast, and has a very small footprint. It's in development stages right now, and is only for Linux, but it works very well.
.debs are available; you should try it out.
