Colors!
Get the R4 adapter and a microSD card, and put Colors! on it. Look what others have made.

Big Brain Academy and other DS edutainmentCan anyone recommend educational software for the PSP? (Or the GameBoy DS, I am not vested yet.)
There is no such product as "GameBoy DS". There is Game Boy Advance, and there is Nintendo DS.
Seriously: You may want to start your kids on Big Brain Academy for DS and then head on to the rest of educational games for DS. To teach them to draw, you can buy an R4 expansion card and then load Colors! on it.

Re:DS homebrew rocks
As a new owner of an R4DS micro SD cartridge I'm glad to report that homebrew on the DS is totally wicked.
May I ask where and how you bought it? I've been browsing their website and can't find how to buy. Their "Where to buy" page gives me a nice empty list on all 6 continents.

DS homebrew rocks
As a new owner of an R4DS micro SD cartridge I'm glad to report that homebrew on the DS is totally wicked. There are productivity apps like e-readers, media players, web browsers, IRC clients, wardriving packet capture utils, and much more. Also, many retro PC games like Doom, Heretic, Hexen, Flashback, Lemmings, SCUMMVM, and lots more have been ported to the DS.
Considering Nintendo's resistance to homebrew I'd be wary of an officially supported solution. I think your best bet is to go with a third party solution. This would enable you to play homebrew NES, SNES, MAME, and other ROMs using their various emulators. This ought to be legal, DMCA notwithstanding. -
Chasing users?
I've always wondered if those that use R4 cards (I don't have one) for the DS and play online are at risk of being caught and having their doors knocked down by the SS..err I mean Police. Surely they're logging users and have means of identifying legitimate/illegitimate users?

Re:It's a lose-lose.
However it turns out, I'm just glad that I got my R4 from HK before the crackdown happened.

A handheld computer with 4 MiB of RAMI think we're beyond seeing any such renaissance from ever happening; a cultural shift focusing on compact and efficient code. This renaissance is already happening, on the Nintendo DS with homebrew accessories. You have a microSD card in the DS Card slot, and you have 4 MiB of main RAM and 656 KiB of VRAM unless you buy a special 8, 16, or 32 MB RAM card that fits in the GBA slot. Of course it runs uClinux.

Re:What GP2X titles? There are actually commercial games created specifically for the GP2X (check out the store), but this is hardly the GP2X's point. Then what is the GP2X's point in practice? Emulators? Tetris clones like the one I made? It doesn't seem very suitable as a Linux-based handheld computer, as it lacks any instant substitute for a keyboard or mouse, unlike the DS's touch screen. It's a handheld for people who are into the whole homebrew thing and don't want to a) constantly fight Sony with firmware upgrades or b) buy expensive hardware to get homebrew to run on an unsupported handheld like the DS. Expensive? If you don't care about GBA mode, the hardware to turn a $130 DS into a homebrew machine is an R4 adapter that costs $40 including shipping. How much does this cost compared to getting a GP2X into the United States?

DS homebrewSo, the other option for decoding OGG Vorbis is a generic processor, which if you want one with enough power also costs extra dollars, and requires a lot of extra electricity.
My $130 Nintendo DS Lite has a $40 attachment called R4 that lets it play MP3, Vorbis, and tracked music, as well as loads of other features. And it gets Good Enough(tm) battery life.
