Re:Don't they have PUBG to thank?
we need to add our own battle royale mode into Fortnite" and -boom- the rest was history.
Metoo usually doesn't sway players to drop one game for another.
Remember there's another difference:
Pubg: https://cdn.vox-cdn.com/thumbo...
Fortnite: https://3bonlp1aiidtbao4s10xac...And then also remember that realistic shooters come and go while Team Fortress 2 still has a player base 11 years later: https://i.kinja-img.com/gawker...
I think there's another highly popular online game I'm missing too... https://image.redbull.com/rbco...
Those pictures should tell you the difference and why Fortnite appeals to masses.

Re:Professional (anything) requires spectators
And let's face it, playing computer games is no spectator sport.
Errr... three years ago an e-sports event became the fastest selling event ever to sellout the Staples Center... http://www.redbull.com/us/en/e...

Slashdot, I know it'd violate your lovely tradition and all, but is it too much trouble to check your links before they go live?

Re:bike?
Yes indeed, Craig Breadlove's "Spirit of America" a tricycle set an average speed of over 400 mph (640 km/h), and still holds the World record for making the longest skid mark.
Fred Rompelberg from Maastricht, the Netherlands is the holder of the motor paced speed world record cycling with 268.831 km/h (166.9 mph) and was oldest professional cyclist in the world at the time.36-year-old Austrian Markus Stöckl, director and owner of the MS Evil Racing Team, set a new world speed record for serial mountain bikes on gravel on a volcano in Nicaragua when he hit 164.95 kph. By doing so, he eclipsed the record which the Frenchman Eric Barone set nine years ago. Downhill moutainbiker Markus Stöckl sets new world speed record
Gissy's feat just seems lame.

Re:Yeah, so?
It's a bit of a mix of both, but primarily a video game with trading card like features. (It sounded pretty lame to me)

One KBM per machine, and Internet lag
Why would games even need to be KB+M - hostile?
Because of the practical limit of one keyboard and one mouse per PC. I've read reports that few PC gamers have multiple gamepads connected to a single PC, but even fewer have multiple keyboards and multiple mice on a PC (other than the case of a laptop with a USB mouse that the user is using instead of the built-in trackpad). This means multiplayer games using keyboard and mouse are overwhelmingly played over the Internet. But there are several video game genres that don't work well over the Internet. I tried playing a fighting game over the Internet a week ago, and it was full of control lag that the game introduced because you can't dead-reckon as much in a fighting game as you can in a first-person shooter. And forget about party games; those rely on the out-of-game social interaction made possible by putting two to four players in a room. See editorials by The_Netcup and Damien McFerran.

Re:It's been done
I'd be more impressed if someone found a way to NOT get into space with a helium filled weather balloon.
Maintaining a constant altitude, and thus preventing the balloon bursting, would be very cool.
Happens all the time. NASA, USAF, and any number of universities and commercial entities launch zero pressure balloon all the time that use vent mechanisms and pourable ballast to maintain constant float altitude at 90k - 140k feet.

Re:No more skinny dipping...
This could become a cool new Extreme sports: Survive in the lake.
I bet Red Bull would sponsor it. -
Don't you guys have RedBull?
What sort of pansy so called energy drinks are those
choices?
In Europe, Asia and Australia we have Red Bull.
Caffeine, Taurine, and B Vitamins. Works a treat.
There's a heap of imitators like Red Stallion and V that
include Guarana into the mix as well.
Sheesh these Americans, always last to catch up
(see PAL, GSM phones)... -
Wow...
I can't believe you didn't mention Red Bull. Red Bull is an energy drink specifically made for waking you up and getting you moving/thinking etc. Red Bull is even more than just your everyday caffiene, it has some other goodies in it to keep you coding/fragging all night and into the next day. Hehe, I probably sound like a salesman. =)

Vodka RedBull is good for youI just read in an article on news.com.au (/. mentioned this as well) that: "drinking at least three cups of coffee a day can reduce the risk of developing alzheimers disease by as much as 60 per cent."
"Scientists believe it is the caffeine in coffee that protects against alzheimers, an incurable disorder that causes disorientation and memory loss."
There is also a article at msnbc.com, saying that alcohol may reduce Alzheimers as well.
"Drinking moderate amounts of alcohol, which has already been shown to help prevent heart disease and strokes, may also cut the risk of Alzheimer's disease by nearly half, a Dutch study found."
I knew I'm on the right track. Can somebody pass me another Vodka Red Bull?
*Caffeine is known for its stimulating effect, clearly noted above all in the circulatory system and in the brain.

Origin of Code Red?
Just curious about the "highly caffinated soft-drink" popular among programmers that Code Red was named after. My first guess was Coca-Cola but someone also pointed out that it could be Red Bull. I'll stay with my original guess, due to the red cans and abundance of Coke wherever I see programmers. The only question is whether it qualifies as highly caffinated. On the other hand, Red Bull has its merit as well, being, well, "Red." However, I do debate whether or not Red Bull is highly popular, since its expensive as hell, and alot of the programmers I've met couldn't afford Red Bull on their non-existant saleries Anyway
... I'd be anxious to hear what insight the slashdot community can give on this matter. *looks around table*
damn that reminds me ... i gotta throw away some of these coke cans ;) -
Re:A bit more background information
> Bullshit! Taurin does nothing besides tasting strange. The rumours are wrong.
Even according to Red Bull, you're wrong. From their FAQ:
"What exactly is taurine?
Taurine is a conditionally essential amino acid, which naturally occurs in the body. At times of extreme physical exertion, the body no longer produces the required amounts of taurine, and a relative deficiency results. Taurine acts as a metabolic transmitter and additionally has a detoxifying effect and strengthens cardiac contractility."
