Bad MEN Of Wireless
justbeatit wrote to us with an article from Red Herring about the bad MEN of Wireless. MEN, of course, means Motorola, Ericsson and Nokia. -
More PlayStation 3 Grid Computing Details
gwernol writes: "Redherring has a good article on Sony's forthcoming PlayStation 3: not too many technical details but good background to the Xbox/PlayStation wars. Sony are touting the use of massively parallel 'cell computing' to get a 1,000 times performance increase over the PS2. This plan, also known as grid computing is also discussed here." -
Cable Boxes with 802.11
foniksonik writes "'Cable providers are upping the ante in the competition for broadband subscribers. By combining cable TV, broadband service, and wireless connectivity in one set-top box, cable companies could soon offer consumers value that DSL firms won't be able to match.' 802.11a/b/g and what happens to Tivo? The most interesting part is the potential for 'network neighborhoods'." I'd suspect the cable boxes will end up using a variety of proprietary crud. -
XBox + UltimateTV for $500
Daetrin writes "Red Herring reports in this article that Microsoft is planing on combining the XBox with their UltimateTV Recorder with a projected final cost of about $500. The article also talks in some detail about the massive (though partially expected) losses that the XBox is costing Microsoft. There's also another article on Yahoo that sums up what Red Herring said." -

From Midway to Xbox, The story of Seamus Blackley
Matey-O writes: "Red Herring has an interesting look at Seamus Blackley, the Man behind the Xbox, and what it took to bring the console to market." I like that this article points out the risks that Microsoft took by trying to enter a field with very established competition (and with mixed results, so far). -
Carmack: Lord of the Games
seer writes: "This article on Red Herring is a nice look at the interworkings of id software, most specifically their famous employee John Carmack. It delves deeply into the fact that id has stayed a very small company and dabbles with other topics such as Carmack's tendency to stay away from Microsoft 'standards' and the whole DooM ]I[ debacle. An interesting read." -
Mitch Kapor Joins Ximian Board of Directors
miguel writes: "Today we announced that Mitch Kapor has joined our Board of Directors. He is one of the co-founders of the EFF and Lotus (You can learn more about Mitch here.) In other news, I want to point out guys to our Latest Evolution beta which comes with SSL support (IMAP and SMTP), Pilot syncing and LDAP in the default build. The team at Ximian has been busy fixing every bug you guys have reported (feature requests will have to wait until 1.0 ships, we are in feature freeze now) and we are closing bugs faster that you can report them. What are you guys going to do about this huh? HUH?" -
Dial U for Union
An Anonymous Coward sent in this story about a communications union trying to expand into the Internet age. Any Slashdot readers with Internet/programming-type jobs in a union? -
Cheaters Sometimes Prosper
The Red Herring has a story discussing the cheating epidemic in online gaming. Discusses the problem from the point of view of the game companies, especially the ones producing console games who have to get it right the first time or face reissuing a huge number of CDs. -
Indrema Dead in 30 Days?
missingmatterboy writes "Red Herring has an article on the current state of John Gildred's Indrema, and it doesn't look great. Without an investment in the next month or so, only the prototype will ever get finished, much less any completed units." Lots of lofty ideas, but you can only produce vapor for so long before exposing your soft fleshy belly. It sure looked like it could have been something tho. -

Shining Light On (And Through) MEMS
An unnamed correspondent pointed out this story at Red Herring about the small-but-not-nanotech devices known as MEMS (microelectromechanical systems). The article focuses on the use that these devices can have in the form of switches enabling optical routing. At present, despite the huge carrying capacity of fiber optics, routing their signals is slower to accomplish and less developed in general than that for data sent as electrical signals. (But on what planet are devices 1-10 millimeters in size "smaller than the width of a human hair"?) -
Mutant Tetrachromat Females Found
Hydrophobe writes "Red Herring reports that at least one living human female has four-color (tetrachromat) vision. Apparently, genetics dictates that all such tetrachromat mutants would be female. Compared to them, the rest of us are partly colorblind - they would be able to see colors beyond the standard three-axis RGB scale." -

Red Herring Looks at Corel's Linux Strategy
Wellspring writes "Red Herring's done an article on Corel's Linux strategies. Interesting overview of what they're doing, but they seem to have half a hundred complaints about everything Corel is doing." -
Transmeta Details Continue to Unravel
KrisJon writes "Redherring has some info on Transmeta's pending announcement of its product line." It comments about Torvald's keynote today (and it says he won't spill the beans, but that The Transmeta Website should update and actually contain content tonight). Update by RM: as of 9 p.m. EST there was new content on Transmeta's Web site. Not much, but more than it had before. Read the HTML for the secret message. -
The Latest Transmeta Rumor
Today's Transmeta rumor is from Red Herring. Their story gives more details than the c't article we pointed to earlier this week, but is still full of unattributed info. Supposedly Transmeta's "real" Web site will debut with ruffles and flourishes Monday evening when Linus Torvalds gives his Comdex keynote speech, and all these little advance leaks are supposed to pique our curiosity about what he's going to say. Okay, mine's piqued. How about yours? -

'Legacy-Free' PCs Appearing Everywhere
gjt writes "Finally. The death of of the ISA slot is near. Red Herring is running a story on the Legacy Free PC. Plug all of your mice, keyboards, joysticks, modems, etc. into the Universal Serial Bus. Compaq is releasing a computer called the Vista which will do just that. Yes, Apple did that over a year ago with the iMac and PCI based G3 and G4. Of course, if you're like me, you'd want to build your own box. Asus makes legacy free "PC 99" compliant motherboards. I wonder if this means more IRQ numbers. And what's the state of USB and Firewire support in Linux?" Suddenly USB is everywhere. Will it take hold? A lot of PC manufacturers sure seem to think so. -

What it takes to be a profitable Internet company
Zebulun writes "The Red Herring has a really good article that basically examines what it takes to have a profitable internet company and why so few make it. " I think investors are expecting this more and more-the next few years will see some shake outs, something which has already begun to happen. The question is, who will be left standing? -

MP3.com goes public: Public goes Crazy
mykey2k writes "Anyone remember this story back in March? Well, MP3.com went public Wednesday. There's a story here, which seems to have some details. " It opened at $28, and went over $100 a share before leveling out the in the $60s. -
Google Gets Bigtime Funding
EtherSnoot writes "Google just got $25 Million in funding from some Internet Big-Wigs. I guess there going big time. Awesome to see such a cool search engine getting the bucks. The article is here. " Wow-they've got both Sequoia and Kleiner Perkins for VC funding. Excellent-I'm glad to see they are getting what they deserve. -

Freeware:Article in Red Herring
Booker writes "Red Herring magazine has an article about Open Source software from a business perspective. They seem to think that it will NOT be the Next Big Thing in business, but it's interesting reading. There are quite a few articles in the "Related Links" section at the bottom, including ones about Open Source startups and Open Source hardware, and an article by ESR. " -

Taking the Capitol out of Venture Capital
A good article is currently running about venture capital and its accessibility. Some interesting comments-like don't ask for less then 6 million US. But it appears that the technology aware, like everything else, is starting to get more lean. -
Microsoft Destroys Evidence?
Unconfirmed - Mr.Darkguy writes "A key witness in the antitrust suit filed by Caldera against Microsoft (MSFT) has admitted under oath that documents were deleted from computers in a Microsoft office during the federal investigation of the software giant, sources close to the deposition said ". Can you say smoking gun? Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but if this is true, not only did they give away the code with the "error" message in Windows 3.1, but they admitted to lying about something else that's about as important. -
Microsoft Memos come back to haunt them
The Redherring is carrying an explosive article about Microsoft's secret memos which discuss how to kill DR-DOS, and in general how to leverage the Windows monopoly. Funily enough, that's the sort of behaviour the Sherman Act prohibits. In related news, a group of people who just don't get it have banded together into the TAAC, an organisation of VARs that claims the DOJ is stiffling innovation. ("s/Innovation/bug count/" ????) David Hart and El contributed the second link, while Adam Radulovic, John Lazzaro, Sunil Gupta, David Price, Matt Francis, David Hart, Phillip Brown, toebee, and I found the first link.
