An unnamed correspondent pointed out this story at Red Herring about the small-but-not-nanotech devices known as MEMS (microelectromechanical systems). The article focuses on the use that these devices can have in the form of switches enabling optical routing. At present, despite the huge carrying capacity of fiber optics, routing their signals is slower to accomplish and less developed in general than that for data sent as electrical signals. (But on what planet are devices 1-10 millimeters in size "smaller than the width of a human hair"?)

Plug all of your mice, keyboards, joysticks, modems, etc. into the Universal Serial Bus. Compaq is releasing a computer called the Vista which will do just that. Yes, Apple did that over a year ago with the iMac and PCI based G3 and G4. Of course, if you're like me, you'd want to build your own box. Asus makes legacy free "PC 99" compliant motherboards. I wonder if this means more IRQ numbers. And what's the state of USB and Firewire support in Linux?" Suddenly USB is everywhere. Will it take hold? A lot of PC manufacturers sure seem to think so.

A good article is currently running about venture capital and its accessibility. Some interesting comments-like don't ask for less then 6 million US. But it appears that the technology aware, like everything else, is starting to get more lean.

Unconfirmed - Mr.Darkguy writes "A key witness in the antitrust suit filed by Caldera against Microsoft (MSFT) has admitted under oath that documents were deleted from computers in a Microsoft office during the federal investigation of the software giant, sources close to the deposition said ". Can you say smoking gun? Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but if this is true, not only did they give away the code with the "error" message in Windows 3.1, but they admitted to lying about something else that's about as important.

The Redherring is carrying an explosive article about Microsoft's secret memos which discuss how to kill DR-DOS, and in general how to leverage the Windows monopoly.
