Re:yes, but
I'd like to see a real FPS where one shot and you're done.
Red Orchestra: Ostfront 41-45
No bunny hopping. No instant reloads. No heroes. Stark, grim and "real" as it gets.
You may be tired of this genre, but I fully recommend you try this game. -
Re:I don't think so
Unfortunately in the RO:O community, there has been no end of the realism debates over the years.. such is life.
If Jumpgate was being billed as a MMO-Space-Sim, then yes: It should definately be more sim oriented.
This article bills it as a "space-fighter MMO", so that in my mind makes it just a 3d version of Subspace.. and that's fine too.On an aside.. i'd play a MMO space sim.... something the likes of the old X-Wing games or the X^n games.

Re:I never understood.
When you so casually throw out "pure skill" what you really mean is pure twitch skill and reflex. Memorization is skill; planning out your strategy based on what you know will happen is also skill.
Again, I'll harp about my favorite genre with FPS games with the hard core realism in which skill does count.
Take Red Orchestra for example. I keep harping on it because it is realistically painful. Historical imbalances have been added to the game to make it close to the real thing as possible.
You have to deal with gun recoil, fatigue, bullet drop, manually reload with your bolt weapons, and also tanks with realistic amror.
You have to know that a Kar98K rifle has a particle range and you have to know how to lead the target. Of course an German rifleman's skill with being a twitch shooter is no good when he has to reload facing a charge by a Soviet with a submachine gun.
And then you have tanks of various power and types which you have to remember how to play. (Panther tank's weak to the side... Tiger's are slow to turn their turrets and the Stalin tanks take way too long to reload... Most of tank combat involves guessing the range and knowing if your enemy can kill you first because he can reload faster which is why if you are a Stalin tank that you should move as soon as you should because the enemy can usually get 2 shots off before you reload the next time if you happened to miss)
Now if they had random maps in RO it would require the player to study objective maps a bit better since no one would know where they were, but due to the maps complexity in RO I seriously doubt they would have pull this off if they tried a new engine. -
Re:Realism
There are cases where there can be too much realism, but this isn't one of those things.
There was a serious discussion by Red Orchestra game devs at one time (or least they said) about the use of keeping corpes in the game because they are aiming for the most "realitic" game ever. And RO is brutally realistic if you have never played it. (no crosshairs, realistic weapon trajectories, and realistic human attributes)
Given the fact that Stalingrad was literally covered with dead bodies that couldn't be buried because of the constant battles it was also considered for static models of dead bodies on the battle field.
But the problem was that the engine could not handle it without serious issues and there was no point in hurting game play just to have something so cosmetic.
Hopefully in the future it could be included once game engines and hardware can do so. -
Re:America's Army
If that's what you're looking for in an FPS, I would highly recommend you to try Red Orchestra, and the UT mod Infiltration.

Re:No its rather recent
I assume you are reffering to the problems that came about from the launch of HL2 (assuming as you do not elaborate at all).
Recently, I saw Red Orchestra at Target and bought it as an impulse buy because I really liked the Mod. However, to my dismay, I could never get it to run because it could not connect to Steam.
Even tried connecting directly to the internet without a router and turning off firewall and hacking the WinXP TCP/IP, but to no avail that game would not work.
I would have reformatted the machine, but it was my room mates. *coughs* My main computer is a PPC mac *coughs* and they were disproving of me playing games on it anyways.
Still... I thought it as money towards supporting an indie game dev, and eventually I'll have a Intel Mac so it will hopefully work.
But doesn't mean I will shy away from games that use Steam. -
Re:Kudos for uniqueness!
Speaking of that kind of thing
.. if you're really into WWII FPS games then Red Orchestra: Ostfront 41-45 might interest you.
RED ORCHESTRA LINK
Although it is Windows only and requires Steam installed it is a great shooter, especially if you dislike the run and gun play that other games have. This game has an infantry side and an armoured tank battle side to it, both focus on realism as much as possible while maintaining a great gameplay. It requires teamwork and tactics to win.
Also of note it is takes place on the Eastern front of WWII, so it is Allies (Soviets) against Axis (Nazis) with realistic choices of weapons, classes and vehicles. The game does NOT have crosshairs on the screen either and requires the use of the gun sights to aim effectively.
It is a whole lot of fun once you get used to the gameplay, frustrating at first but worth the $25 entry fee. -
Wrong link to RO
The official link to RO is here: http://www.redorchestragame.com/
The other is to their old site. -
Red Orchestra!
How many times do I see articles that might as well be talking about Red Orchestra. They basically have removed all crosshairs, ammo counts, and health stastics.
All information is through visual, sound, or textual cues.
Example1: If you are low on stamina, your guy breathes heavy.
Example2: To find out how much ammo you have, reload and you'll get a message that says, your clip is heavy etc.
Example3: You don't get cross hairs. If you want to aim, you hit ironsites and it brings you guy up to your eyelevel and you use the 3d model to aim.
Very fun... Very realistic... Prolly the best WWII sim out there and these guys are an indie company. -
And they forgot Red Orchestra!
Tripewrie will hopefully get it pushed out the door in February even though they've been holding off for final tweaks.

Mostly likey the most realistic FPS so far as far as WWII combat goes... -
Re:Personally...
I'd love to see a game where the numbers simply aren't available to the players.
Actually, I've thought about the same thing myself. I've been playing Red Ochestra Mod for UT2k3 which doesn't show health, amount of bullets, or stamina. Everything is given through cues like heavy breathing if you are tired and "clip is heavy" or light if you yank out your clip to check your ammo.
Then I thought to myself, why don't they apply this to MMOGs. Seriously, levels, hp, mp and all the other numerical stats make the game more gamey and less realistic. Yeah I know its all fantasy and sci-fi, but I want to be immersed and not sit down and do math calcuations on the best class/weapons/magic combo and complain about stastics on forums).
We have an entire 3d graphics, sound, and many other ways of displaying cues of strenght, power, health, and damage. These don't have to arbitrary numbers but rather creative methods in order to inform the player of their status. -
