Re:Fortunately
A patent that forces the user to view an obtrusive, disruptive message? That'll never get granted.
Luckily, this is prior art. Look: http://www.rjlsoftware.com/software/entertainment/clippy/screenshots/clippy_buttons.jpg

For those that miss the little guy
You can download an "enhanced" incarnation of the little dude for free at:

Re:Well, you could use
The parent post's idea actually isn't that bad. If it's for an internal Windows-only network you've got the benefit that all computers have it installed already. It doesn't sound like the submitter needs anything fancy, so why go through all the trouble of downloading and installing another IM tool? This is what my company uses and it works great. If you need to send files you've still got e-mail. As far as a GUI client goes we use Net Send by RJL Software (http://www.rjlsoftware.com/software/utility/nets
e nd/).

Pretty much downhill
Innovatively speaking, everything has been pretty much downhill since clippy.

Prank software
This is not really comparable to the utility described and is not supposed to teach you discipline, but here's some prank software for Windows. Advanced Clippy is the best-sounding one.

Do this
Replace iexplore.exe with this one
Bomb
and don't forget to mail (from some non-spam-catchable blahblahblah address) your boss proof-of-crash links that you find in the latest IE vulnerability reports nicely disguised as 'click me to view your fortune today'
and if you have the access, install a few of those weird, extremely irritating toolbars that can eat up the window space in no time
To be honest, that your boss doesn't even think of suggesting you to switch over from IE let alone compel all you people means that he deserves to lose business; so why bother?! let the IE rampage continue

Re:Pervasive Gaming - Radical Mobile RPGsThis sounds a lot like a game that I used to play in college. I don't recall its name; hell, I don't know if it even had a name. But the rules were simple: Try to "kill" the other players before they "killed" you.
For example, lets say that you're with an opponent, and they foolishly ask you to get them a drink. You bring back a can that has a PostIt® note on the bottom that says "Cyanide". If they drink the can without noticing the note, you get a point and they lose one. Or you can plant an alarm clock somewhere, with a PostIt® note reading "Bomb". Anyone in the room when it goes off loses a point apiece, and you get them all.
P.S. This was back in 1976, before the term "LARP" was invented. Ah, the good old days, before all those new-fangled computers showed up.
