Re:It also lacked wireless..
I had a Powermac 5200 all-in-one with a remote control AND a TV tuner.

I agree, Apple should have kept this idea going.

Re:Random thoughts on Apple
I totally agree. Fake wood inlays on the dashboard are critical to the overall functioning of the vehicle.
My entire dashboard is hideous 1970s woodgrain. With an analog clock bigger than the speedometer.
Pimpin' ain't easy.

Network stuff.
When I lived in an apartment, I contained a lot of the network clutter in a milk crate. Get a milk crate and a bunch of cable ties from a hardware store.
Zip tie one of your surge strips inside of the milk crate, along with your router and your cable modem. All on different sides. Hook them all up together and use more zip ties to bundle up the cables between them.
Now put the milk crate on the floor, with the open side down, and stack more stuff on top of it. This means you not only get rid of the desk clutter from your cable modem and router, but you now have a printer stand as well. And a couple of headless boxes can get put there, too.
Here's my old setup.

Worked well.

Re:iPod Problems
Those old Power Macs don't make bad MP3/stereo systems if you've an A/V card for it, and they're fairly cheap at thrift stores and the like.
They make pretty good television sets, too.

Re:I actually met a reverse switcher today.
Whenever a page looks incorrect or doesn't function in Safari, click the little bug icon in the upper-right corner, and it pops up a dialog where you can send feedback directly to Apple's Safari team. It can optionally include a screenshot of the page.
It works, too. I sent in a bug reports about this page a couple of days ago - the modelines at the end of the XF86Config file were being rendered on top of each other.
I just downloaded the new Safari beta, and now it renders correctly. Very responsive.

Re:linux on a non PPC mac?
I have a Quadra 660 AV sitting in the closet collecting dust. I was wondering if anyone knew of a linux distro for an 040 mac and could point me in the right direction.
Debian would be a good choice. I ran it briefly on a Quadra, and the performance was pretty good for a machine of that era.
So far as I know, they're the only native-English distro for m68k.
(You might want to read this page as well -- it's a little summary I wrote for installing another OS on a Mac with limited disk space.)

New TLDs.
From the Netcraft survey:
The introduction of the new domains like .biz, and increasing internet development in parts of the world, will counter the abandonment of existing domains.
Somehow, I doubt it. The new TLDs really don't seem to be working out for anyone -- I haven't seen a single ad or packaging or anything directing me to someone's .BIZ address, and I sure don't know anyone who has registered one.
I suppose the "we got COM, NET, and ORG, gotta get BIZ!" people like CompUSA might be able to help counter the trend, but I don't think there's enough of those greedy bastards to do it.
Good thing, too. I knew things were getting out of hand when someone squatted my domain.

5200. (OT)
My 5200/75LC was the suckiest piece of suck ever created.
They're not always all that bad. Check out the HOWTO I wrote on making one useful.

transient communications.
i find it tough to believe that anyone would seriously consider doing away with payphones. not everyone is a silicon valley dotcom rich kid, you know... i'm doing a little bit of travelling right now, and pay phones are the only way to catch up with people i know in different cities. get rid of those, i'll have no way to get in touch when i roll into town. bad idea.
a lot of people in this world don't even have a computer or a tv, let alone a new nokia to fuck around with.
