Late!
They're very late.
There's already pending litigation against Roxor Games by Konami for violating registered IP concerning the Dance Dance Revolution series of games. -
Re:Whitelist
The game in question is In The Groove. The USB device whitelist is here.

Re:Hmmm...
Stepmania has moved so far beyond DDR at this point. Above and beyond all the new features they added to the main DDR game (constant scroll modifiers, mod-scripted courses, mines, etc.) it supports practically every other rhythm game in existence. Add expandability into the mix and you have a game that outdoes the official DDRs on almost every level. Even that screenshot is a picture of Magic Dance mode, which was only available in one specific version of DDR, and is greatly improved upon by the additional modifiers in Stepmania.

As long as we're plugging OSS games...
I thought I'd toss in a quick mention to my personal favorite, StepMania. It's reached a level of maturity such that there is a group that's turning this into an actual arcade game
.
There aren't many other OSS gaming projects that can claim that. (Though, they're doing the same with this one. They've got one of these at the Mall of America, even.)
Yay Open-source turned viable business model! (Well, as viable as the arcade scene is these days...) -

Re:Free software: The alternative to piracy
If Tux Racer and StepMania have proven themselves worth of being converted to commercial arcade games, doesn't that redeem them a bit? (Pun semi-intended, as arcade Tux Racer spits tickets.)
On what basis do you call NetHack with one of the new GUIs "lame crap"? I bet several dozen geeks are ready to descend upon thee.
And don't forget about proprietary games available to NVIDIA video card owners at no cost beyond bandwidth, such as Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory.
