Re:Meh - American Radio is beyond hope

Meh - American Radio is beyond hopeUS TV, films etc are pretty good, but other than NPR American free to air Radio is beyond hope. Having one channel own almost all the stations is effective death.
Payola, while unpleasant, is nothing to people who are carefully creating radio to only be sports, 80s hits and right wing shock jocks.
But, fortunately, there is satelite with some variety but above all else the internet.
Australian radio, in contrast to US radio, is vibrant, brilliant and is a good industrial subsidy for the Australian music industry (ever wonder where INXS, Midnight Oil and many others got their start?).
If you want to check it out over the net check out JJJ, RRR, 3PBS and enjoy some streaming quality alternative interesting radio for a change.

science dressed as entertainmentit at least makes people that would have been otherwise unaware of some aspects of science aware of it.
what aspects of science? I often wonder about factual content of *drama* television. If you talk to real scientists discussing CSI this year on www.RRR.org.au (radio live to web) you would get comments like 'equipment product placement', 'test that take days, weeks are solved in hours', 'people who happen to have expert knowledge in too many areas'. I cant find the exact link to the show but a couple of forensic scientists working in St Vincents Hospital, Melbourne ripped the shreds as to the factual content let alone scient content.
Real science is about discovery, measuring, observing then (the kicker) do some experiments, observe and write it up. The closest I see on television that emulates this is the BBC nature programmes started by David Attenborough. Though Americans may probably be more familiar to that other David, Canadas own David Suzuki.
Watch a show from one of these blokes and you will see the difference b/w the candy-coated hollywood version and the real messy world. Which leads me to my next observation
So where does CSI rate on the geek scale for you? ...inbetween miami vice and the simpsons

Re:How's Australian radio?
Australian Radio is very Diverse.
Here in Melbourne, we have two Dance/Pop Stations (Nova,FOX), one Rock/Classic Rock Stations (MMM), two Independent, Eclectic Public Stations (RRR,PBS) two Oldies Stations (MIX,Gold), two Classical Stations (MBS[Independant],ABC Classic[Government]) and one Governement Youth Station(JJJ), in the top half of the FM Band.
There is also a plethora of Independent, Commercial and Government Radio stations on the Bottom Half of the FM Band and on the AM Band.

Re:Quantity not quality ?
Your 1% of non-Crap-US music is more like 20-30% of non-Crap-Australian music.
There is quite a bit of Quality Music here in Australia, some modern, some Progressive, and some Traditional. Also, there is a Healthy Independant/Live Music Scene in most Major Cities. Public Radio Stations also open up Unknown Music to a wider Audience, in all sorts of Genres and Styles. They have such a Large Audience, that one Melbourne Public Radio Station (3RRR,) is Purchasing a Property to house their studios.
I'm not saying there isn't a lot of Crap Music in Australia, but there is also a Lot of Good Music...

RRR FM Melbourne, Australia
For music promotion, both local and internationally, this station is unmatched.
For what it is - a subscriber funded, independant radio station - Triple R maintains a relevant and professional broadcast. It's the kinda radio station you grow into, once you've opened your third eyeball to the world. When you're truly over sanitized radio (Australia has Austero - America has Clear Channel?) a strong local radio station like this is heaven sent.
I agree too that most radio is listened to in the car. Though I also find that I listen to radio a lot in the morning - while gettin' ready for work etc.

NO NOT JJJ!JJJ is rubbish. complete and utter rubbish. The DJ's are just as mindless as any other, they don't know anything about the music they're playing. Nicole Fossati for example, who hosts the afternoon program used to be a host on SBS's Alchemy. I now hear her talking about how much she loves indie music. Yeah. right. I'm sure, love.
The days of JJJ playing indie demos has long gone too.
Why not try SER, RRR, PBS, RTR or 2RRR (note, 2RRR's not streamed)
I notice that you're a fellow Curtin student, you might want to check out 100.1 fm I could never pick it up at home (joondalup) but could occasionally from curtin campus.
