  1. The Weather Makers on 2005 Will Probably be Warmest on Record · · Score: 4, Informative

Read this book The Weather Makers by Tim Flannery, if you are genuinely interested in doing something about climate chnage.

It is brilliant and timely call to action for everyone to reconsider their energy use as it applies to C02 emmissions.

  2. Economics or Communication on Best Degree to Pair w/ a B.Sc. in Computer Science? · · Score: 1

It really depends on what direction you wish to take your CompSci. Communication (MBA) is great for those areas of technology which are now global forms of mass media and 'social software'. Whereas Economics is awesome for those areas of technology and software development which are deeply entrenched in a businesses.

I would have thought Economics was obvious, though find that Communications has been invaluable.

  3. DOCTypes People! on A Look at the Newly Released Mozilla Firefox 0.9 · · Score: 1

Get your doctypes right and IE will start to 'toe the line' a little better than if you didn't use correct doctypes.

Don't get what I'm talking about? Fix Your Site With the Right DOCTYPE!

  4. Re:Crumpler Bags Rule on Recommendations For A Good Laptop Bag? · · Score: 1
Agreed! I've had a Wack-O-Phone for nearly three years... shovin' a big heavy old notebook in there nearly every day and then some. My buddies all have them now for their notebooks... in fact anybody in the know here in Melbourne has one.

    Crumpler bags kick ass!

  5. RRR FM Melbourne, Australia on Who Needs Radio? · · Score: 1

    Triple R

For music promotion, both local and internationally, this station is unmatched.

For what it is - a subscriber funded, independant radio station - Triple R maintains a relevant and professional broadcast. It's the kinda radio station you grow into, once you've opened your third eyeball to the world. When you're truly over sanitized radio (Australia has Austero - America has Clear Channel?) a strong local radio station like this is heaven sent.

I agree too that most radio is listened to in the car. Though I also find that I listen to radio a lot in the morning - while gettin' ready for work etc.

  6. If it can't be done... on Mobile Internet Down Under · · Score: 1

Usually an Aussie will find a way to do it...

And - how un-Australian for those knockers to tell that guy the he couldn't. They were practically provoking him to succeed.

  7. Pixar is more than that... on Big Blue to take on Pixar? · · Score: 5, Interesting

Unless you're going to replicate the entire Pixar team, company X (Dreamworks, TDRL, anyone...) is never going to be Pixar.

As if the bleedingly obvious has to be stated here, but Pixar have a long history of digital animation, and their films have never been about the technology, it's always about telling a great story.

The technology simply provides a platform from which to elevate their incredibly rich narratives and ideas to another level. Should Pixar ever reach the boundaries of their current technolgies (software and/or hardware) I'm guessin' they will find something else, or some other alliance that will provide them with a powerful platform which will support their creativity.

There is no doubt that they do this already. RenderMan, provides them with the flexibility to (re)develop their own software when requirements upon it change.

I wouldn't bind my creativity to anything - would you?

  8. Your PC is not a '59 Fender Bassman. on AOpen Debuts The Funniest Motherboard Ever · · Score: 2, Funny

As a muso who has always used Tube based amps for that rich warm tone that you can only get when those 6L6's and EL84's are glowing a nice red colour I know why you would want to do this as an audiophile. I just don't think it's very smart.

    Here's why;

Heat - I never rest my beer on top of my amp, not because I'm afraid it will spill. I just don't like warm beer. Half-way through the first set and the top of my Bassman is warm enough to send my beer cool in a few minutes. And that's through 3/4" ply and some varnished covered tweed.

Heat - A mate of mine who does repairs on guitar amps has cursed the fate of many Mesa Boogie amps of the early - mid 90's, tube tone was no longer passe' but unfortunately, anyone that knew anything about engineering electronics for tube use had become passe. The problem was that the tubes sockets for the Mesa's were soldered right onto the main circuit board - after a few short months of club use these amps were toast! The tubes had caused enough damage to the main board that they had to be replaced. Leo Fender designed his amps so that the tubes were mounted off the main board, and still does to a certain extent.

Heat - Well kinda, guys, it's just not cool. If you really dig your tunes and are a true audiophile, you'll get yourself a device that is purpose built for the reproduction of music. Yeah, you're 'putey is kewl. But it's not one of these.

I do think that this board is kinda funny.
