Re:Depressing.
You already mentioned openexchange. Of course there is always Lotus Notes, not exactly a drop-in m-exchange replacement but an interesting product all the same, and well suited to large enterprises.
Here are some possible ms-exchange replacement products of interest, in no particular order -

Re:Exchange Killers
And of course there's Scalix which does a much better job of any of the "Exchange Killers". Their Outlook plugin is basically 100% compatible and they have a really nice Webmail client too.

Re:Integration
There is already such a solution. It's called Scalix. It has full Exchange mode support for Outlook.

There is also Scalix, which does have a migration tool from Exchange, and can also live side-by-side with Exchange servers, making a migration easier. It's not Open Source, but it's an easier migration path than other commercial (and Open Source) options for those looking to get away from Exchange.

Re:Wonderful, wonderful - alll we need is a serverTry Scalix.
It won't meet your wish for a full-blown Mac and Linux client, but it's Linux-based and offers functionality equivalent to Exchange. Mac and Linux users can get their mail via IMAP, and calendaring via the web is in the upgrade due out next month.
(Full disclosure: I'm not involved with Scalix but we were their first customer.)

Re:Scalix real technology?
I would like to address your questions about availability and pricing for Scalix. Scalix Corporation formally announced its shipping products on July 28, 2003. See the press release on the Scalix web site: http://www.scalix.com/release2.html. Scalix is distributed through a commercial license agreement (there are licesing fees). Like many enterprise software companies with complex products, Scalix has not published the exact details of its pricing strategy.
