NobodyManI had figured Nintendo for dead, given the Gamecube's seemingly poor specs. However, w/ 1.1m at launch and a $200 pricepoint, they might just pull it off.
Unless Sony releases ps2 linux in th states, I might just jump ship.

Neato!Heh. You can actually see the "Slashdot effect" by visiting their results page: http://www.ps2linux.scea.com/cgi-bin/survey/surve
y .cgi?survey_name=surveyIn case you're interested the total "Yes" votes was a little more than 200 after I voted.

Re:Just not right...
This is just the sort of bastardization I hate. If you want to run Linux (I do (Run it that is.)), buy/build an f'ing computer. PS2's may be cheap, but by the time you've got a keyboard/mouse, etc, it just doesn't loook quite so attractive. Plus the onboad storage is so limited.
Actually, the Japanese version comes w/ a 40G Hard Drive, mouse, and keyboard (among other things). -
Re:Good news for PS2 alsoNot necessarily...there are a handful of games that were using some direct-to-the-metal routines that won't emulate and so Sony keeps a list of what's not compatible. Some PSOne periphs don't work well either (Twin Shock Home Arcade Stick). Fortunately, GT and Vagrant Story are not on that list.
Even if it does run (and it probably will), why not wait for a PS2-specific distro? Anything written for PSOne will be unable to take advantage of the PS2's forthcoming HD and net access anyway.

Re:Great.my dreamcast can already do this, using broadband too.
Mine can't. See, Sega released their broadband adapter and then released a whopping 3 pieces of software that work with it: Quake III, Unreal Tournament, and the execrable Pod Speedzone. Without going through all sorts of nonsense (involving pirate Japanese web browsers and other such silliness) THAT IS IT.
Why this sad state of affairs? Because the "online" games (and browsers) Sega released before only work with the stupid freaking dialup 56K modem. Why? Because Sega never wrote/licensed a general purpose TCP/IP stack, so all the other software is FREAKIN' HARDCODED to a STUPIDUSELESS analog modem.
Sony was at least smart enough to license a modern IPV4/IPV6 stack from a company that maybe knows a little about TCP/IP. -
Misinformation
Whoever wrote the article needs to get his/her/its facts straight. The specs for the PS2, available at http://www.sc ea.com/ news/press_example.asp?ps2=ps2&ReleaseID=9, indicate that the graphics subsystem for the PS2 has 4MB of embedded DRAM. This is not necessarily the total amount of video memory that the PS2 has, and it's quite likely that a fair amount of the 32MB of system memory can be used for video as well. The embedded DRAM, however, implies that the graphics chip has 4MB of memory on the die, similar to what Bitboys Glaze3D was supposed to do (whatever happened to that, anyway?), which could lead to emormous performance increases since it can access that 4MB directly. Sorry, but I think PS2 beats DC any day...

Oh, It may be a Betamax
but not because of the XBox. Looking through the specs I see 32 MB of Direct Rambus RAM. Now, given this from Intel, is Sony the only major rambus user left? Could this also have to do with the PlayStation2 shortage? I hope to see the day when Rambus memory is as hard to find as memory boards for my Thinkpad 340 laptop.
As an aside, why did they use mpeg2 compression? Because mpeg4 isn't ready and Sony wants nothing to do with the evil mp3? Do you think they will let us flash the image decoder with mpeg4 for even better in-game video? And seeing the max resolution is 1280x1024, how can I hook this up to my 19" monitor and finally get rid of my t.v.? -
DVD problemsI have a real problem with the DVD portion of these machines. I know that the PS2 and X-Box are primarily for game use, but a lot of my friends have expressed interest in getting them for the DVD movie playback abilities. Being a huge DVD fan I know that one of the biggest features of DVD is Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS sound output. None of these machines even talk of the support of these audio standards. It seems that those who are buying these machines will be out of luck when they try to get the digital sound for their home theatre system. Seeing that both systems specs (X-Box and PS2 ) don't list these standards I really feel sorry for those gamers who wish to get true digital sound from the movies being currently released on DVD. Even the majority of computer packages don't support the standard either.

Re:SSSSSSSSSSSSSSLLLLLLLLLLLLLLOOOOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWok, obviously your ignorant (doesnt mean your dumb, though that is highly likely) You think its slow, what about the P2 with a 300MHZ proc? check out the facts and specs before you judge moron
Speaking of checking out the facts before judging... according to this, the Playstation 2 has a 128bit processor. 128 bits at 300MHz is still a wee bit more than 32 bits at 600MHz (The X-Box uses a PIII processor, which is only 32 bit...) Funny how MS never mentions that in their comparison charts...
