I think I will make a link for litigious bastards in my slashdot journal.. I don't use it for anything else.

Hack teh Google!
By now I'm sure everyone now knows that entering "miserable failure" and clicking "I'm Feeling Lucky" on Google will bring them to a certain politician's homepage.. well if everyone reading this were to link "litigious bastards" to SCO's website on their webpages..
Ya never know :) -

Re:Tired of Sco...
It's called a "Google bomb" and was invented as a joke by Adam Mathes back in April of 2001; while the miserable failure bomb was started by George Johnston in October of 2003. It works by having a lot of people with a presence on the web (web pages, blogs, journals, anything that Google might index) create a link to a specific site, like this: idiotic thieves. Since Google ranks search results by the number of links that point to them, you could catapult a specific page to the number one search result for a specific search string. Like those idiotic thieves. The caveat is this: what you were talking about, with a spoof page getting higher results than those idiotic thieves actual page wouldn't work because, while Google apparently considers the miserable failure type of Google bomb to be a type of valid free speech, attempts to hijack another company's web presence by making the top result for "SCO" become an anti-SCO page would (probably) be stopped.

Re:Tired of Sco...
It's Easy.
- Pick your site to boost (ie www.sco.com/releases.cfm)
- Pick your phrase to link to it (ie stock manipulation)
- Tell all your friends to tell all their friends to put a link like
<a href="http://www.sco.com/releases.cfm">stock manipulation</a>
in their blogs. It's even better if their blog entry is talking mostly about investment news (more likely to be authoratative for "stock manipulation") - Don't bother selling SCOX short. so many people already have that there's not enough stock on the market to cover their shorts without driving up the price.
- Wait a few weeks for the search engines to spider all the blogs and do the PageRank (or whatever that particular search engine call it) thing.

SCO and Open Source
Funny. I was doing some research on SCO/Caldera and it's previous commitment to Open Source/Free Software. What I found was this guys making some weird announcements. This one seems very strange to me.. Please, look closely to the "unenforceability of the GNU general public license and other open source licenses" phrase. It is from 2001.
.... Also, O'Reilly has a very interesting article about Caldera/SCO releasing old Unix source code under a BSD license See also the discussion in the Unix Heritage Society. -
VERY INTERESTINGI was just comparing the contract sections quoted in the SCO Letter with the same sections in the only actual license document I could find, the AT&T/IBM one. What got me looking was the "emphasis added" to paragraph 2.04 which really appears to be completely different from the contract, but I found this ommitted in the SCO letter from the end of paragraph 7.06a in the IBM agreement:
If information relating to a SOFTWARE PRODUCT subject to this Agreement at any time becomes available without restriction to the general public by acts not attributable to LICENSEE or its employees, LICENSEE'S obligations under this section shall not apply to such information after such time.
If this clause is really in most agreements and just ommitted by SCO in the letter, it looks to me like if some code was put into Linux by someone other than the company the letter was sent to that the licensee has no further obligations under that section towards that code. Let's say that code was put into Linux by IBM. Wouldn't that actually indemnify all other licensees against redistributing that code since a third party made it available to the public?
-
Re:"Many eyes"
Maybe a lot more companies than we know are paying SCO's licensing fees.
This at least is easily answered. They lost $1.6 million on revenue of $24.3 million, $10.3 million of that on licensing agreements, entirely with Sun and Microsoft.
Read more directly from SCO. They spin the press release as if $9 million for lawyers shouldn't really be counted as an actual expense, and that if you ignore that, they're making money hand-over-fist. Heh -- feel free to invest your life savings with them if you believe that. -

My maths and 30 days deadline
So a judge told SCO to come up with evidence within 30 days from December 5.
Would this evidence be the list of header files as printed in this letter, or has SCO chosen not to disclose anything further?
Is that 30 business days or 30 human days? -

SEC filings for SCO released
Here are the SEC filings for SCO.

Re:And for those SEC filings...
Maybe they quit as a result of working for a company with nothing more to add to the world of useful software or invention (did they ever really?). Or, maybe it scared them that they worked for a company that interacted through a "partner lounge". That sure scares me. Are they running a porn site or a corporate portal? And lastly, how would you like to be one of these poor companies? Run far away, Life Insurance Company of India! I bet a lot of companies will be looking for a new provider once SCO goes down.

I wonder if the other ones quit?
Well, the new job listing in your link, for the "Director of Financial Reporting" position (posted 12/08/03), does seem to be missing one important detail under "Job Responsibilities".
I don't see "Serving as scapegoat during inevitable corporate collapse." Do you think that's what they mean by "Additional special projects will be given on an 'as occurring' basis?" -
