Re:They can have my Gnutella
First Napster, then Kazaa, now AudioGalaxy.
There were many others in between. I remember how cool scour was before the legal scour came into existence. You'll always remember Napster because it was the first, but those bastards at the RIAA/MPAA are hard at work.

A legal Napster-like example ...
The resurrected Scour Exchange. Works only on Windows/IE5, but is otherwise legit and functional. Not not affiliated.

Other Options?
No surprize that the volume went down. What I don't understand is why I never see scour mentioned when people talk about other options to download what Napster provided. It can be found here: Scour.Com It may not have a linux interface, but then again, neither did Napster when it started.

Scour's Technology May NOT be DEAD
Scour may be dead but their backend indexing technology may not be. The companies assets are being bid on by several companies including listen.com. One asset a company has is it's "intellectual property" which includes it's source code, so if another company buys it (listen?), maybe we'll see something yet.

Good thing they published the spec
Well, at least they published the STP/1.0 spec, rather than making us reverse engineer it like we had to do with Napster.
And actually, I'd been thinking of starting a Scour server daemon... Maybe I'll actually start doing it now. -
Re:How many people have ethernet?
Hmmm... Combine the hax0red TiVo with one of the lovely storage devices from mondays' slashdot article and you could store some serious TV time... Commercial free and what you want when you want it. I'm sounding like a commercial for TiVo/Network Engines, I know... Anyways, this could make for some interesting TiVo applications. It could also make for more pirating controversy because people will have an easy way of recording _all_ of their movies/shows/etc and freely/easily distributing them via scour or gnutella. The lawyers would have a field day! Anyways, just my $.02

Re:Lets make a New version
Kinda have that already, in scour exchage... (client available on download.com, or via scour's website, www.scour.com - currently 19 TB of stuff out there, I've seen it as high as 25TB.
Well, I guess we need to thank Lars for all the free publicity...Kind of Ironic.... -

A Moral Decision
Gee whiz, Napster gets shut down (or put on hold). Maybe you could prove the RIAA wrong better by actually supporting the artists whose various works you have downloaded. But of course, that might be the "Wrong" thing to do considering it allows for the RIAA to continue funding itself. But again, wouldn't it be more correct to support the artist(s) by buying their CD. Moving those CDs equates more money for the artists, after the record companies are done tariffing the CDs.
My point is to show them how mp3s can positively influence how music is sold, rather than bitch and moan and have these "protests" against the RIAA, just proving the point that you want everthing for free, and if it isn't free, then you can roll it up real tight and cram it.
Or you could just use some other service (like Scour that propogates "piracy" in a rampant and uncontrollable manner). -
Goliath and the pebbleHere is my amateur opinion: Napster is going to lose. Why? Because it makes money. You don't see Gnutella or Napigator or whatever making millions each year. You see them creating a little file-sharing program that can search over thousands of computers. They don't have suits on the other side of the screen but stained coffee mugs and geeks staying up past their bedtime.
Who's next? Scour, of course. Where else can you find every song Napster ever thought about having, plus having that idrive space to back it up. The songs are being saved on 'idrive' and deleted as fast as they are posted. However, idrive isn't keeping up. We've already seen the MPAA freak out over the Scour movie-finding situation. But Scour also has it's own "Napster-ish" program that does the same job for music as it does for movies (on a personal note, the 'movies' on scour normally turn out to be pr0n).
Okay, okay. So, what does this all mean? This means that Goliath is pissed, because we may be stealing some money from them. Money is the root of all evil, didn't somebody say that? A better quote is, and I'm quoting Boiler Room here, 'The people who say money is the root of all evil don't have any'. We're pissed and we can point fingers but we don't get the checks. You know what I say? Screw Napster. Let 'em get canned. They're making millions. There are tens of hundreds of clones out there, and they'd have to be shut down one at a time. There are no lynch mobs to hunt down the coders. There are the courts. And the Internet has (for now) some small bit of privacy (don't let me get Katzy). And that is our advantage. That is our strength.
Who needs one big shiny, rich pebble to kill Goliath when we can make thousands of tiny ones, causing a (metaphor-enduced) avalanche?

These are NOT full flicks
Check out the research conducted by the RIAA. Take a close look at the screenshots of Scour Exchange and you will see that MOST of the files that they are downloading are not even FULL movies. I would be willing to bet that many of the "movies" they found on SX were trailers that people had downloaded and placed in their shared directories for download. The thing that I wonder is why is everyone of these major organizations jumping to the legal system as their primary means of problem resolution?

more of slashdot's BS articles
the RIAA is targeting companies that make a point to offer copyrighted music. there is also an interview with hillary rosen on news.com where she specifically says that they are not just randomly suing people.
in short, the assertion that they will be going after google is goddamned stupid.
a search for mettalica mp3z on scour looks like this, whereas one on google gives you this.
you can download the mp3z directly from within the scour 'interface.' that is NOT neutral.
have a nice day.

scour.com
I find it sort of odd that mp3.com is being sued when scour.com has got to be the easiest way to download any mp3 (all illegal of course). Obviously, the argument they would make is that they don't actually have the mp3s on their servers, they only provide the links, which might stand up in court. However, scour.net is partnered with idrive.com and has features where you download the mp3s to an i-drive, so it seems like i-drive could easily be sued.

Why are they so bent out of shape!?
Nobody has realy said much about dual deck tape recorder or cd burners. whats the difference wither its a pysical copy or digital? same deal with the DVD... who's going to download a 4 Gig movie? even with cable/dsl. not many people have the hdd space for that either! people have been getting mp3's off of ftp's for years. long before napster! What about Scour? How come they haven't gotten any flack on this topic?
In my opinion I really don't think programs like napster has any real effect on the music community. So what if Dr. Dre can't make the millions he's used too! $15-20 for a cd is outragous! all the more tape's ever cost was $10! if anyone is ripping someone off... its the record company's! you may email your thoughts to

-thankyou Brian -
