Does this happen often?
A long long long time ago I heard exactly the same story.
Here's a blog discussion among scuba divers claiming the exact same event, at the exact same nuclear power plant, that was posted in 2013 (referring to a past, previous event).
So, either this is a hoax, or this happens occasionally at the nuclear power plant in question.
(I *do* have to wonder how something gets sucked into a reservoir without encountering propulsive blades.)
When I first heard the story, it mentioned that there was no warning of any kind to deter scuba divers from that location. The current news story says the same thing.
I mean, it is *exactly* the same story!
Does this happen often?

Re:It's a hoaxYou already have seriously long underwater times with present rebreathers.
Practical consequences : pee-valves have been routine for years ; diapers are nothing unusual (and have been routine for saturation diving for
... as long as there has been saturation diving, if not longer).Move up to longer (multi-day) dives and you're looking at having to deal with eating and drinking underwater - the latter isn't too difficult - and also dealing with the effects of long-term immersion on the skin (greasing up all over the exposed skin, for example, or using environmentally-isolating suits as for shit-diving).

Re:why?
Exactly how many bars of service do you get under any significant depth of water? How garbled is the voice stream?
Randomly googling, check out the third response:

Of course they will, they're *French*
France is the only country on the planet that has actual SCUBA Police to wander around underwater and make sure you have your "Diving License".

Re:Local water current
These cables are subject to coral, rocks, currents and shifting water... is it any wonder they wear through with the constant rubbing up against rocks and whatnot?
WTF??? Check a map. All areas of the cuts except one are in the end of a body of water with nowhere for the water to flow to/from. These areas are high current locations like the great lakes in the US.. Stagnant. You may get choppy seas from wind, but there isn't much flow to speak of. Coral reefs don't grow in stagnant water. I have not seen any travel brochures for great dive sites in the area.
The comments I have found on diving in the area seem to be along the lines of this post.
"Hi Folks
Have dove the Med on a number occasions and in different locals such as Cyprus,Italy, and Greece. I think the only highlight of diving the Med is artifact diving. Water clarity and marine life was nowhere near what I expected in fact down right dismal. This I believe is attributed to the European method of sewage non-treatment and overfishing practices. Have dove the Adriatic as well, Croatia down to Albania and found much the same conditions, albeit the marine life was more abundant. The Med/Adriatic would not be my choice for a diving holiday, but if there for business purposes water is water :), Oh yeah not mention the permits you require to dive Greece :(."
http://www.scubaboard.com/forums/archive/index.php/t-90.html In short, the Western Med is OK close to the open sea, but the East end is a dead sewer. There is no coral, poor visibility and few fish. -
Spear Phishers
In news today, IBM has captured one of the notorious spear phishers. Here is a picture of the dubious scum, the Spear Phisher.

Well, you might check out some of the posts here: Scubaboard
Divers tend to be concerned with such things. -
Re:Alvin and the romance of oceanography
And here I am, in the middle of freaking Kansas, trying to get enough dives under my belt to become a SCUBA instructor and singing Jimmy Buffet songs, while trying to scrape enough cash together to get an old catamaran.
The old romance isn't dead. Go check out some of the online sailing(here) and SCUBA communities(here) to find some. -
Oh like in the grand scheme of things ...
Okay the "big picture" college profs should be showing you is this one.
