Re:537,000 down...
That's that Intellitxt inline spamming JavaScript crap. It basically scans the content of a page and turns certain keywords into anchors hooked into a style sheet that pops up the ads when you mouse over it.

Re:Marketing people are often monumentally stupid.
words "cooling system" are green and underlined twice. When I mouse over the green, I see an ad for Sears

Re:Section 1B and Verisign?
"such that the user is prevented from viewing the content at the intended Web page"
Is this specifically aimed at Gator when they replace ads on a website with a competitors advertisements?
So you go to Ryder's Truck Rental website but see ads for Budget trucks instead. According to http://www.scumware.com/apps/scumware.php/action:: view_article/article_id::1059892064/topic::Press-C overage/ Gator claims their practices are legal, but under this definition 'preventing' is going to need more clarification. Does 'preventing' mean all pop-ups caused by scumware are illegal, or does it mean because I can close the popup that the scumware is not 'preventing' my viewing of the intended web page? -
Myway uses adware.I just did a google search and came up with this:: MyWay Speedbar
Sorry, but I'm not willing to get email with a service that supports the use of adware/scumware.

AKA Scumware
This is a known and growing problem. Check out scumware.com.
Amazon's policy is to remove the accounts of these scummers, but affiliates complain that Amazon is not doing this effectively. It is something they must address. It's hard enough to make a dime off an affiliate program as it is, without having your referrals stolen. -
Parasites deserve to go underThese people not only steal other peoples music, but the scumware that gets installed onto your PC steals commissions from website operators.
Check out scumware.com and Parasiteware for more info on these. Another case for AdAware!

For each gator Exec who dies life get 0.01% betterWhich adds up.
My big concern is normal users (my parents, brother, girlfriend, etc). How are they supposed to tell the difference between Flash 6 and something like gator?
Normal people may not have heard of gators nasty little activities, and unfortunate as it is someone of them will click yes.
Companies like this, and others listed on scumware (repeated from first post) really make me feel sick to the stomach with their exploitative nature.
(I think I'm some form of weird hippy that just wants people to be able to play on the internet safely, without there computer being clogged with steaming hell shite.)
People may also want to check out grc's optout or have a poke around on the internet for other anti spy ware (adaware and stuff, sure it's been mentioned in this discussion somewhere)

Re:a followup link
Why is it that some people always try to get karma just for posting clickable links?

Business 101 - try really , really hard to piss off your customers
Ah yes, the real model.
Anyway, this is pretty damn evil. I bet the gnucleus guys are loving that they're being associated with such horrible scumware. -
Overwriting webmaster's own hyperlinks
What would be really scary is if these programs simply over wrote regular hyperlinks on the web site - rather than just words in text.
Uh, eZula's TopText already does hijack existing links. See screen shots and explanation at scumware.com.

Re:How do they work?
According to ScumWare it appears that they are plugins. This makes sense, since every version of IE has a different (and progressively better hidden) method of setting the proxy, but the plugin interface is standardized between versions.
