This is one of the greatest fallacies commonly repeated in these debates. How do people arrive at the conclusion that the US has one of the highest corporate tax rates? Take the highest federal tax bracket, add it to the highest state tax bracket, and call this number "the corporate tax rate on companies in the US." Nevermind there are states with a zero tax rate. Nevermind that the GAO reports that in a given year between 60 and 70 percent of all companies pay zero federal taxes. There are so many tax breaks that almost no company pays the full amount. In fact, a number of companies end up with a negative tax rate. Yes, a negative tax rate. Not only do they pay no tax, they get paid a rebate from the IRS.
Please, don't repeat the fallacy that US companies pay the highest corporate taxes. And question the sources that tell you they do.
Consider, the attitude of "just throwing more processing power" at something is driving up electricity usage at data centers and office buildings across the country. A responsible programmer in this day and age should consider the energy footprint their code will have. Yes, I am completely serious.
The reason the government regulates radio and TV is because broadcasters are granted protected access to a finite public resource for their private profits. In exchange for this access, they must "serve the public good" in certain defined ways. That's what the Fairness Doctrine was about. And it still makes as much sense today as it did when first introduced. However, it does NOT apply to the internet, which offers limitless access for all points of view.

And how long do you think that will last? Do you just take it on faith that the US will be the boss of the world into the future? By outsourcing the actual making of stuff--AKA wealth creation--we've cut ourselves off at the knees for short-term gain.
Um. What trust? You think you're demonstrating trust with that type of parenting? You aren't. You think he won't know that you're snooping on what he does outside the home? He will. You think he won't resent being allowed zero privacy? He will. I see no "trust" in your plan, at all.
I had almost the exact same experience, although it was one persistent predator (38 year old pretending to be 18 and hunting for vulnerable teen girls). Rather than shut the site down, I disabled any new accounts for over a year. I've since reinvented the community as a community for young adults, typically college students through age 30. This is outside the predator target demographic.
MSN recently launched a new search with a new algorithm that beats Google for some searches. Combine that with the fact that it is backed by the 800 lb gorilla, and it is clear that MSN will be Google's number one rival. Furthermore, Google has pissed off a lot of webmasters this past year and many people are finding MSN more accomodating as far as getting their sites listed. So keep an eye out for MSN search.
IIRC, the creators of Spiderman speculated that audiences thought certain scenes looked fake, despite the great care the effects guys took to respect the laws of physics, because no one has ever seen a human run, jump, and swing from webbing at superhuman speeds. So our brains register it as fake. What made Matrix 1 great was that the effects, while definitely beyond the abilities of a human, were still limited and subtle enough for us not to reject them outright (plus, I think slow-motion looks more "real" than fast-motion, somehow). Neo flying around like Superman, however, doesn't give me confidence that this will be the case for Matrix 2 & 3.
Kid Icarus had a female flying creature that was topless. I don't think I ever got to that level in the game, though.

I've had Earthlink DSL (effectively 1300/320 kbps) for $50/month for over a year now. The only extended outage was immediately after 9/11/02. Other than that, it's been great. No complaints here.

Amazon's policy is to remove the accounts of these scummers, but affiliates complain that Amazon is not doing this effectively. It is something they must address. It's hard enough to make a dime off an affiliate program as it is, without having your referrals stolen.
Yeah, I did the exact same thing! In my early and mid-teenage years, I wrote some crazy stuff in BASIC- weird animations, crude evolution simulations, graphical games, and even moving, multicolored graphs of polynomial functions. The timing is all off if I run them on a new computer now, although for some it actually improves them.

Wired article on the Netflix challenge. Netflix has a benchmark dataset that they run the competing algorithms against to judge improvement.

I've read that SimCity 4 can be played on Linux via Wine, and that it works okay unless you try to zoom. Haven't tried it myself though.
