Sharp
Sharp's various R&D laboratories still do an awful lot of pretty cool stuff. I spent my gap year working at Sharp Labs of Europe, and had lots of fun. Sharp have a R&D lab in the USA as well. Check it out -- I imagine many corporations still have similar dedicated and well-funded research efforts.

Sharp ZQ seriesSharp used to make PDAs with small (but not too small) keyboards and incredibly long battery life - and enough RAM for simple word processing tasks.

Re:Sharp Zaurus?
As I've owned a Zaurus 5500, Tungsten T3, and currently own a HP iPAQ 4155, I definately have to give the "coolness," "gadget," and "power" to the iPAQ hands down.
User replaceable battery (one of the issues with the Tungsten), 400 MHz XScale processor (whole lot more powerful than the 5500), integrated Bluetooth (more than the Zaurus has) and WiFi (more than the T3 has) and with a couple of third-party apps to "fix" the annoying things about the Pocket PC operating system I'm most definately in love with this iPAQ...
I'm sorry, the handwriting recognition on the Zaurus sucks (Decuma OnSpot for PocketPC, OTOH is able to decypher my hardly intelligable chicken-scratch) and my fingers are fat enough that trying to use the thumb keyboard is annoying at best. WiFi, while not essential in a PDA, is damn nice (access to the fileshares on the Windows network at work while doing things where a laptop isn't readily accessable but I'm in WiFi range is schweet) and gives me the ability to use Pocket Putty to ssh into my fileserver at home while sitting on the couch.
The Zaurus has a cool "geek" factor, but really, I got tired of the shitty quality of the PIM apps and fighting with the device to try and get it to sync got old after about 3 weeks. -

And to think Sharp disagreed with their own innovation! Ala Zaurus 5600 vs Zaurus 5500

Re:Does anybody have more info?
I also have sight in only one eye and was wondering the same thing. According to this description from their web site (link shamelessly stolen from above post):
We see everything about us in three dimensions. This is because each eye has a slightly different view, and the brain is able to interpret the images as a three dimensional scene. Conventional displays, which only present one image cannot reproduce the three dimensional effects.
It sounds like us "mono's" (how is that for a special interest group? ) will not be able to see the 3-D image. I would guess they are creating two images that are each seen by either eye due to the distance between the two eyes.
I can still hold out hope though...

Here it is at Sharp's site

Some other things to note...
- There are some really good pictures of the device at Sharp's UK site. (For dial-up users, be forewarned that they are a bit large.)
- Currently, the device only synchs with Windows, but SSH/SCP has already been ported, so you can at least FTP with a Linux machine (and securely, to boot!)
- Someone has already ported the Seminole Web Server. Konqueror is being ported as well. A minimal Python port is supposedly in the works!
- This device contains both a CF slot and a memory card slot, so you can use your Targus CF Modem (maybe even your MicroDrive?) and an MMC at the same time.
;) - Pocket Quake is already running on it!
The device is a little expensive (US$400), and you can't sign up to get one without becoming a developer (here), but if you're into Linux, Qt, and/or Java, it could very well be worth it
And if you're not hardcore enough to get the Developer version, the consumer version should be available early next year, and it makes a great PDA regardless.
Mine will be here Wednesday... I can't wait! -
Linux + Java - gotta be a winning combination!
Besides the fact that the US web site http://www.sharp-usa.com when viewed with K-Meleon displayed a page indicating to upgrade to Internet Explorer 4 or Netscape 4, I was quite unable to find a lot of info.
A few web searches took me through the UK web site (they have a pdf spec sheet) to the developer's web site (why didn't I think of it in the first place ?!).
Both the Linux spec and Java are interesting. It runs PersonalJava 1.2 with the Truffle AWT L&F. On the Linux part, it implements Embedix - the 2.4 kernel. I find very interesting it supports BusyBox + some additional commands.
"It provides minimal replacements for most of the utilities you usually find in fileutils, shellutils, findutils, textutils, grep, gzip, tar, etc. In addition, by using the network or a Compact Flash card, useful Linux tools can be used."
Also, I find very comforting that on the interface part we got Qt/Embedded which is quite cool.
To sum it up... I'm a developer looking for a PDA. $400 is pricey, but the Zaurus is not a gadget it's a real tool. I hope I'll find the funds to get one for Xmas :)
