Re:USA, the land of freedom
That's silly. The US has more or less the same size manufacturing economy as China.

Re:you could steal secrets back.. and are
Oh bullshit. The US is the #1 manufacturing country on the planet, or damn close to it.

In terms of worker productivity it isn't close. The average US worker produces almost 10 times as much value as the average Chinese worker.
well..
you use a lot of the produce. that production isn't at risk by the chinese. but it's not leaving the USA that much either.
which is also a bit why you shouldn't be that worried about the current situation as it is amassing wealth(physical goods!) into usa. if you default on the debts to china or whoever you end up with the net gain of physical stuff.but I guess my original point was aimed more at stealing yer seeeecreeeets. look, if I can't buy an american made cisco router anyhow what the fuck does it matter if I buy a huawei? what does it matter for usa if they're stealing manufacturing secrets from ford when ford should really be worried about them stealing manufacturing secrets from VAG, like ford should be doing? if I couldn't buy an american made iPhone even if I tried what does it matter for usual american if I buy a chinese android pos phone? chances are even if I bought a ford it would be made in germany! If I wanted to buy American made high tech I'd have to buy a weber grill or a leatherman. I don't think the room I am in has _anything_ with a made in USA stamp on it(_some_ of the souvenirs might be - but just might).
OK, I thought of one thing that's assembled in USA, the makerbot replicator I got here - but I don't think any of it's parts were made in USA and certainly not the only certified part of it(the psu) - electronics on it certainly aren't american and neither are the stepper motors(arduino based electronics aren't exactly high tech anyways).

Re:Clearly, the US is at fault here
It is not clear that China has passed the US in manufacturing.

Not only that, but wages are rising. This is resulting in a high rate of manufacturing job losses in China.

Premise of story is baloney.
The US has the largest manufacturing output of any nation on planet Earth.
http://www.shopfloor.org/2011/03/u-s-manufacturing-remains-worlds-largest/18756
http://mjperry.blogspot.com/2009/10/us-still-worlds-largest-manufacturer.html
The reason that US has been losing manufacturing jobs has almost nothing to do with offshoring. It's due to improved efficiency; fewer people are needed because of automation and other improvements.

Re:Quick primer on the downfall of the US economy
Exactly. The grandparent is complete bullshit and should be modded down.
The US is the world's largest manufacturing nation in terms of economic output. People seem to forget giant companies like Intel, Caterpillar, Boeing, Cisco, ADM etc. not to mention the pharmaceuticals and the farming industry which are world leading. Not only that but the US does it with a mere 8% of its workforce. The economic output of the average US worker is more than 10 times that of his Chinese equivalent because he's more technically skilled and produces far more valuable products in a highly automated setting.
The Boeing main aircraft assembly building in the Seattle area is the largest manufacturing facility in the world.
http://www.boeing.com/commercial/facilities/
It was Boeing who discovered the Y2K problem because they are such a large consumer of aluminum they have to project consumption of aluminum a decade in advance so the aluminum industry can scale their capacity to match their consumption.
I don't know where people get the idea the US isn't competitive in manufacturing. It is a huge force on a global scale in manufacturing, and factors like low energy costs because of the vast natural gas reserves being developed are likely to keep it that way. Anyone writing that the US has no manufacturing capability is full of bullshit.

Myth. The US is the largest manufacturing nation in the world.

If you look up this link, and read the comments, and follow those links you will discover that the ShopFloor article is wrong. China has been the largest manufacturer since 2008.

Re:LOL, fucked by "Free Trade" once again!
So, you think that weight is a better scale of how much manufacturing a nation does? You are kidding. Right? Good luck with finding that out since it is considered as useful as CO2 per capita. In addition, the discussion was NOT manufacturing exported, but manufacturing.
However, LMGTFY.
And that produced a new report with a graph.
Heck, here is a http://www.dailyfinance.com/2011/02/16/rising-us-exports-trade-deficit-oil-china/">new article about exporting.
America is the world #2-3 exporter in terms of manufactured goods (Germany passed us in 2008,9, but we recovered in 2010). The problem is that China CHEATS causing loads of imports to America. That leads to a misperception that America has quit manufacturing. Have them quit cheating, and we will rise to #1 again. When ppl say that USA can not compete, does not manufacture, and does not export, they do not have a single clue of what they are saying, OR they are simply lying to protect something (basically politicians). The best thing that America can do is raise the trade barriers to China, alone. All other major nations, esp. EU nations, have the sanity to say that they will not allow China to do this garbage. -
Re:Tax dollars
"Intellectual property" is one of the few things that the US produces these days and it employs a large amount of people in a country rife with joblessness.
The United States is the world's leading manufacturer of goods.
United states unemployment rate is 9.2, which is lower than that of the European Union, and only 2 points above the world wide unemployement rate.
Just thinking you might what to actually check your facts before making wild allegations.
