Re:Disharmonious comment
It's probably a reference to this
http://english.sina.com/china/2012/1119/528202.html
Zhou Yongkang no longer holds the post as secretary of the Committee of Political and Legislative Affairs of the CPC Central Committee.
Meng Jianzhu, Minister of Chinese Ministry of Public Security, has been appointed as the new secretary, CPC Central Committee announced Monday afternoon
So You Yongkang got sacked but no one in China is allowed to speculate as to why.
According to Wikipedia
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zhou_Yongkang
In May 2012 the Financial Times reported that Zhou had relinquished the operational control of the party's Political and Legal Affairs Commission to Minister of Public Security Meng Jianzhu due to his support for former Chinese politician Bo Xilai, and had lost his right to select his successor when he retires from the Politburo Standing Committee in fall 2012. The New York Times later reported that Zhou's status remained unchanged.
Bo Xilai was a Maoist and a very dangerous person who got denounced by Wen Jiabao (who as someone put it "seems quite nice for a Chicom")
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bo_Xilai#Removal_from_posts
On 15 March, Bo was dismissed as Chongqing party chief and its related municipal posts, while temporarily retaining a seat on the Politburo. Due to the potentially destructive effects Bo's dismissal would have on party unity, party elders were consulted on the matter. The decision was reportedly made at a meeting of the Politburo Standing Committee on 7 March, during which security tsar Zhou Yongkang cast a lone dissenting vote. On 14 March, Bo was reprimanded by Premier Wen Jiabao during the Premier's annual press conference. Wen called the achievements of Chongqing "significant," but the result of "multiple administrations," i.e., not just Bo himself. Wen also made numerous allusions to the damage wrought by the Cultural Revolution, an indirect rebuke of Bo's efforts to revive "red culture". Addressing high-level political changes by a Premier to an open public forum was unprecedented. Political observers believe that Wen's remarks and Bo's downfall represented a consensus within the central leadership that Bo not only needed to shoulder the responsibility for the Wang Lijun scandal, but also marked a significant victory for liberal reformers.
On 10 April, Bo was suspended from the party's Central Committee and its Politburo, pending investigation for "serious disciplinary violations." Bo's wife, Gu Kailai, was now a prime suspect in the inquiry into the death of British businessman Neil Heywood. The announcements, carrying criminal implications, likely marked the end of Bo's political career.
On 28 September, the party's Politburo adopted a decision to expel him from the CPC. He was accused of major disciplinary violations and corruption charges during his tenure in Dalian, the Ministry of Commerce and Chongqing, including the Gu Kailai case. He was also accused of having "improper sexual relationships with a number of women."
On 26 October, the Standing Committee of the 11th National People's Congress expelled him, removing his final party or state position and setting the stage for his trial.
On 4 November, Bo Xilai was formally kicked out of the Chinese Communist Party. There is speculation that he is going to be tried by the Supreme People's Court in original jurisdiction, the first time since the trial of the Gang of Four.
Ha ha. It's like when the Daleks took Davros off to "stand trial for crimes against the Daleks". Or when the Island decided to put Patrick McGoohan's chief tormentor on (predictably insane and Orwellian) tr

Don't believe the hype!
Look at this picture in the article: http://english.sina.com/technology/p/2012/0128/435327.html (yes, it's a chinese paper, but whatever)
these people, crawling over each other are trying to get a job in Foxconn! What does that tell you? That they are forced into it? Doesn't seem that way to me.
Suicide rate? Way less than chinese average.
Workplace accidents? Way less than average workplace accidents in factories in the USA!
Come on, people. Please try to see the forest for the trees and realize, that wealth and well-being is not absolute, it can only be compared and stop comparing it to yourself. Compare it to conditions on site. It's not really that hard.
And never, EVER forget that newspapers exist to sell you advertising. Provocative headlines sell a whole lot of advertising via more readers or clicks. (This also applies for slashdot btw.) so, please try to think about what they are actually selling.
The best thing you can do to help these people to better living conditions? Buy more apple products, so a part of your money will go to better the lives of people in china.

Re:Prior Art - Opera Turbo
Opera turbo uses compression via opera's servers. Amazon's thing uses amazon's servers to render. With opera the point is to get around a slow connection on the consumer's side. Amazon's point is to do the render processing on amazon's side. Let's take an annoyingly busy website, for example: http://home.sina.com/ Now this beast can take a while to download and get ready, especially on a low power handheld thing like a tablet. Amazon's silk method should prep all those parts for the displaying device.
Um, yeah. So it does work exactly like Opera Turbo does. Opera turbo also down-sampled images to a lower resolution or lower number of colors which helped cut the download sizes quite a bit.

Re:All this over a fishing boat
And you don't realize all you have said may have been based off claims of Western media who are playing populist cards at home because of all the envies toward China in the western society. No, China does not want "Japan to ignore their laws." They claim Japan have no legal rights to do so at all because the island, which is also claimed by Taiwan which you may consider the enemy of China, does not belong to Japan. Think what would happen if Chinese claims Guam belong to them, sent a vessels to guam, captured an American boat and charged the captain for entering the water illegally.
And if you can read some Chinese, you can find out that the Chinese "hard-liners" are the ones stopping the Chinese people from protesting and that some of those protesting are Hong Kong pro-Democracy activists who have been against the Chinese government most other times. And you can guess why the activists are doing that.
And for this particular RE claim, nobody here seems to notice that it has been immediately denied by the Chinese government.

Where's the truth?
If you can read this Chinese article (and some others on the Web,) the company was investigated right after the report by the local labor department and the press. It is found that (a) workers 16-18 year-old are allowed to work under Chinese law, but must be registered with the labor department and the company failed to register them; (b) the wage is the minimum legal wage of the city; (c) the workers need to work 8 hours day time and 2-3 hours OT; (d) the workers are allowed rest-room breaks. Of course, you won't read these follow-ups in the Western press where everything about China is sensationalized, and you can also dismiss the follow-up investigation as cover-up.
And for this image, maybe one can also interpret it as the workers taking a break at work?

Role of Vaccines vs Anti-Flu Drugs
Using the new In-Cell growing technique many companies seem to be coming up with vaccines in a shorter period than earlier. Medicinenet has an informative article on Flu Vaccines and immunization candidates, and goes on to say why they are required. This is a good read to understand why vaccination is being given importance here. The 1918 "Spanish" Flu epidemic Virus which is very similar to the recent outbreak was re-created in a laboratory in 2005 by Dr. Jeffery Taubenberger and colleagues at AFIP. Comparison with Avian flu strains led to the conclusion that Human Flu Virus strains are derived from Avian flu virii.
Among young people and children Flu vaccines claim to be 70%-90% effective, while this drops down to 30%-40% in people aged over 65 who may have other secondary complications. Hence the scale of vaccination required for the present outbreak (which has been repeatedly noted for not being as lethal as the 1918 Flu strain) may be entirely different covering only those in a risk category. More stress is on drugs that help in combating the Virus in an infected individual. These are usually amino-acid chain suppressors like Tamiflu. There has already been mobilization and distribution of the drugs to combat such an outbreak. The WHO has done a recent donation of drugs to Nigeria. This is however related to continued support of a H5N1 outbreak since 2006.
The role and importance of the Vaccines that would be available is not yet certain. It seems that the stress is more on treatment. Insofar stress on prevention without the involvement of Primary Medical care personnel. Only those who suspect infection have been requested to visit quarantine or medical facilities for treatment. The W.H.O's present stand with the Flu Virus has been a direct result of criticism during the second widespread Avian flu H5N1 attack incidents in 2006. Attention is being given to Avian Influenza as a pandemic because it leads to complications and secondaries making it difficult to fight other diseases with stronger morbidity. -- No Greater Friend, No Greater Enemy! Re:Facebook won't last
What i don't like about MySpace is all the crappy-assed, jacked-up coloration and crazy-ass fonts some of my friends use. Some are so horrendous that they are very hard to read, and more often than not i cannot intercept the crap by hitting the "stop" button to prevent the css shit from taking over the reasonable readability of things. So, i might only visit MySpace maybe 2-3 times a week whereas just last year I'd be on it 2-3 times a day.
Also, facebook (branded as "facebook", not "Facebook"... see Wikipedia...) has FEWER users in the US than does MySpace... about half as many (36.x M vs ~76M, respectively).
http://www.techcrunch.com/2008/06/12/facebook-no-longer-the-second-largest-social-network/
Moreover, facebook's gain is mainly from Canada, an increasing number in Asia, and lots of European locales.
Also, facebook's founder/s may be back in court based on information dug up from their hard drives about the origins of facebook code. However, the ConnectU people had previously signed off on a settlement, which is trying the patience of the judge on the case.

What'll be interesting is to see if Korea's CyWorld will make massive inroads into the US market than they already have. Granted, it's a different culture, probably a vastly more impressive per capita penetration and appreciation of personal technology there than in the US among the younger demographic, so that may explain CyWorld's massive popularity in Asia. But, outside of Korea, CyWorld has opened up more, but in non-Korean, and with fewer features and such than available in the Korean-based CyWorld system. It would be interesting if CyWorld and the facebook systems blended but without diminishing either one...

PHP is still the hottest.
The blog site of sina.com(ranked 13 in global traffic by alexa index) is built entirely with PHP. It's the biggest blog site in China, with more 50 million users including thousands of Chinese celebrities. The blog site deeply use ajax techniques and has a video blog built also with PHP. My point is that if PHP can handle an interactive website(AJAX+Video) with more then 50 million users and more than 10 million page hit a day, what else in the 'net' PHP cannot do?

Re:Optimal balance possible for IP?
Given those points as a backdrop, your assertion that what you call "piracy" (and please do stop using industry-sponsored emotive buzzwords) caused the production of films in Hong Kong to fall of is certainly false.
It is no accident that cheap methods of reproducing DVDs coincided with the demise of the HK film industry.

The above articles describe economic slumps as a factor, however they point to piracy as the primary reason of the demise of the industry. Basically few will invest in making a new film because the returns are crippled by piracy. -

Re:still no hebrew support in MS Office for mac
I'm not sure the elaborate glyphs are what make Chinese more complicated, but rather the vertical orientation.
Chinese script is written left to right, just like English. Go to some popular Chinese Websites if you don't believe me.
Traditional / Classical Chinese was written top to bottom, but the script that everyone uses in their daily lives is left to right. -
Wait a minute.
This makes it on to slashdot, but bugs like this Netscape exploit didn't?
