A link on swbell.net? Oh, that'll last. The original site is on swbell.net (traceroute to see for yourself) -- I'm not sure how well that will weather a slashdotting. Methinks "edibobb" is about to discover what 'reasonable bandwidth use' means.
When swbell.net can't take the hurting anymore, here's a mirror for ya.

See the Other SubmissionsI'm glad people are getting a kick out of this. I really enjoyed orchestrating the competition (I do more than troll Slash, you know), and Andrea and the other candidates did a bang-up job. We couldn't be more proud.
Voting is of course closed, but if you'd like to see the other students' submissions, our voting page is still displayed. You can click on the individual images for a larger view.
Also, a minor point of clarification regarding Timothy and Elektroschock's write up -- this is not a mascot for OOo. This is a mascot for OooEdu, the new Schools Project of Open Office.org. Please, read the attached article to learn about what the OOoEdu aims to do, and how you can help. We're an active and devoted community, and there are things you can do to further OOo's acceptance in schools, even if you can't contribute a line of code!

Re:Mirror
Sad how blatantly they rip off proprietary interfaces. What's even worse is that the guy actually seems proud of being able to make his client look like iChat's ugly, retarded little brother, the one the parents keep hidden in the cellar when guests come over. I weep for KDE.

Re:"all but surpassed"
Looking at those KDE screenshots reminds me a lot of this old cartoon.
Showing off pictures like this or this just shows that people don't quite get it -- it like they just managed to reinvent Windows 95 plus a couple extra features.
Meanwhile the modern Windows user is used to looking at stuff like this. Totally different user experience to what you see on 'last generation' desktops. (Of course, all the Windows users on slashdot turn off this fluff, but after watching a totally new user play around with XP a bit, you realize that "task-oriented" features are actually helpful.)
I'm not saying that KDE isn't a good "power user" desktop, but the proprietary folks keep raising the bar, and having a "Start Menu" isn't enough to cut it anymore. -

Mirror
Thought you might appreciate a mirror , as well as a downloadable copy (about 3.6 meg).
Mod up with 'underrated' instead of 'informative,' otherwise I'll use your karma points to troll at +1 later.

Re:Torrent?

bittorrent of ring 0 (Microsoft for "kernel") srci was only half done downloading before the story posted.
-
Kernel source here
You can find the build applications and such with google already. The basic kernel is here (bittorrent)

Movie TorrentThe QuickTime is 6.5 megs. You can wait forever for it to load from the slashdotted site, or non-MS browser users can download my torrent.
This torrent was readied before the slash story posted. This just goes to prove that the format is good for nothing but spreading unreleased films.
