Re:Or...
The Xenarc screens are supposed to be better than the Lilliput screens FWIW. I've purchased a 7inch version with vid capability as well as VGA for under $400 off of EBAY.
I've been looking into this in order to monitor what's going on with my car's standalone EFI system. Since that EFI system's software allows me to build "dashboards" I can do LOTS of interesting displays. I have been collecting URLs and you can see pics of other's progress and discussion here -> http://forum.aempower.com/bbs/viewtopic.php?t=9604
Some URLs I've collected in no distinct order or organization:

Hopefully some of those will be of help to others considering this sort of thing, I'd be interested in working with others to research this! My plans are to mock up something with the touchscreen and front-end software working with the WINTV, XM PCR, my MP3 collection, GPS mapping, the RLTC software, and my AEM datalogging software. IF it works well (or even halfway well) THEN I'll buy hardware to put IN the car. No sense spending the money if the interface turns out to suck or be too distracting while driving. I'll likely be able to play DVDs too but honestly that's pretty se -

Re:and there's only one problem
Uhm, not exactly.
Warp was (and to some degree still is) THE pioneering label for experimental electronic music. Aphex Twin, who you might not have heard of, is definitely a major influence in a lot of music today. With the increasing use of synths in modern music, you can even hear Warp's influence in music that isn't strictly electronic.
I think it would be fair to say that Warp is the "Blue Note" of jazz music, but I admit that I don't know much at all about jazz, so that might be a dumb thing to say.
Warp records (and Brian Behlendorf, head of the Apache project!) are even responsible for the name of the genre on the label. It's called "IDM" which is short for "Intelligent Dance Music", a name that sounds incredibly stupid and pompous now, especially since much of the music categorized in that genre isn't danceable. But in a post to his new "idm" mailing list back in 1993, brian said he made up the name because of Warp's "Artificial Intelligence" compilations.
Anyway, Warp isn't a major label, but it's defintiely one of the huge, influential indies, so it's nothing to sneeze at. -
Re:No copy protection on CDs/DAT!Your idea about a "60 Hz notch filter" is as absurd as I have ever read on
/.Oh come now, there's any amount of incredibly absurd stuff here.
:-) The filter thing isn't utterly absurd, I was just mixing up several different related subjects. Like I said, the proposal didn't become a reality...but here's one post I just found in searching to demonstrate that I didn't just make it up: msg01163Otherwise, forget I said anything -- that's what I get for posting hurriedly on the basis of very old memories.

Re:GNOME 2 is doing it right
I use vertical-only maximization frequently because I want to keep a window exactly 80 characters wide, but as tall as possible.
That's interesting. GNOME saves the positions of windows; can't you set them up once and be done with it?
Sawfish is very configurable (in a Lisp subset language called Rep). You can probably add that feature back in if you want it.
The WikiSawfishLibrary has sample code for lots of stuff. One of the hacks there is to set custom sizes to some windows; maybe you can use that.
http://sawfish.skylab.org/WikiSawfishLibrary
While I'm sorry that you liked one of the features they took out, I think the simpler interface was worth it (especially for newbies who might be confused by the various options). And you can customize things to bring back the stuff you miss.

Sawfih wiki
Go to sawfish wiki, interesting things, like how to emulate it with workspaces, how to get it working as always (so you can have worksaces AND viewports, and sending to hell those who say you are mad for using that or for viewport), how to get a nice pager for sawfish and many more.
-
Re:Dear Havoc:I was pissed off about that, too. The GNOME2 release notes has info on getting workspaces back. It works well, but unfortunately the GNOME Pager can't see them.
Fortunately, somebody has managed to emulate most viewport functionalies with workspaces. The only thing that missing (from what I can see) is edge-flipping, but this script provides the infrastructure with which to implement that.
More scripts can be found at the WikiSawfishLibrary .

Engines are the problem
If you are trying to enjoy your mobile computer lab in the country, running the engine (or even a generator) largely defeats the purpose of being somewhere peaceful and unpolluted. (The author did not say if he was working on vacation or touring schools and other events, so this might not be a factor.) The other detail is that most RV 12-volt electrical systems are run off the engine alternator, which probably puts out 150 amps for an extremely heavy-duty unit (typical HD is 70 amps). That's not going to run very many computers (1800 watts is only about 7 19-inch CRTs), so you can't run off the RV's engine very well; avoiding losses in the inverter is probably a smart move. A quick search found an ATX power supply which accepts 12 VDC in, and would probably be fine for this purpose.

Re:Appliances are the problem
As far as computers are concerned:
Laptops generally have a direct DC in, but that probably isn't relevant in this case.
Google returns MPBS1 - ATX DC-DC 12 Volt Car Power Supply, but not much else. (at least for the minimal searches I've done.) -
Re:On explaining electronic dance genres
Inteligent - Supposedly "smarter" than the genre's norm, tracks adhereing to an Inteligent sub-genre attemt to be more creative than the typical anthem, often times succeeding.
It should be noted, while we're talking about it, that the oft-used "Intelligent Dance Music" moniker was actually created by none other than Brian Behlendorf, head of the Apache project, in 1993.
He named the mailing list "IDM" after Warp's "Artifical Intelligence" compilations.
After I read that, I don't feel so bad using the term anymore. It was (as far as I can tell) never intended to be as pompous as it sounds. -

Here's the ChangeLog.
That was quick. (It includes a lot more stuff than just the patch missing from rc4). -

Christina Aguilera is a member.
I'm as shocked as you, man!
There's a pretty diverse list of people there. Something for everyone to love (Mos Def, Q-Tip, The Roots, Aimee Mann & Michael Penn, Taj Mahal) and hate (Lords of Acid, Offspring, Sisqo, Dixie Chicks). Adjust lists for your taste.
I'm kinda surprised to see Fred Durst as a member, considering he's on the board of directors at Interscope. Who knows. -

And Also Dead in Oregon
18 April of this year the Oregon State Judiciary Committe held a hearing about UCITA (HB 3910) which I attended.
I've published the details elsewhere on the Web. See the PLUG mailing list or here for details.
In a nutshell, corporate users of software came out strongly against this bill, & the sponsor of the bill was nowhere to be seen. Only three people spoke for it -- Ray Nimmer, who helped write the bill, John Woodard an Intel lawyer, & Jim Craven of the Americna Electronics Association -- & they appeared to be going thru the motions.
I would guess that the best the backers of UCITA in Oregon can hope for is that the bill dies in committee, people forget about it, so they can reitnroduce the bill in 2003. But with other corporations aware of this grab at their own profit margins, I doubt it will pass even in then.

It wasn't always that way, now was it?
Remember the days when you would go to a web page and every sentence had at least one link? Even corporate sites weren't shy about doing off-site linking.
Of course the web was atrocious, but if you found a dumb page (take my old one for example) there was always something linked to that WAS moderately interesting.
Wiki pages are awfully remniscient of the "old web". (Of course that one is centered around eXtreme Programming and kinda boring, IMO, but it's the principle!)
Oh well. The corpratization of the web has brought lots of cool things, too; they're just harder to find now. -
Good OS/filesystems web pageHey, check out my web page: http://www.skylab.org/~sabre/os/
It talks about different OS interfaces, and has a very thorough section on filesystems available under linux, including several other JFS's...
