Re:Still need floppies to flash your BIOS
Not if you own an ASUS motherboard. All 3 of my Asus Motherboards can be flashed in windows with there handy "ASUS Update" Utility. It goes on the internet and finds the newest bios for your motherboard and from a click of a button backs it up and installs the new one. I don't know how "smart" it is to do from windows but worked fine for me on my Asus PII 350MHz and my Athlon 64 system.
The days of floppys are slowly deminishing. Heck I can boot my system off a USB Thumbdrive or a flashcard (connected through my printers flash card reader) if I wanted too. The only systems with floppy drive is my Pentium Pro and the floppy doesn't even work. I was looking at my pictures and noticed I still have the floppy cleaning thingy in it from like 2000.
Oh and out of my 50 some disks I bet you about 10 actually work. -

Re:My Mod!
Wow
... that idea looks like my case (not finished yet) but that's sort of the idea ... fancy clear case with as many lights as I can fit in there.
What's the matter with being scared of the dark :)
Oh you might want a Link to the page.
Nothing too fancy yet ... but working on it slowly -
Re:April Fools? Right?
Intel still hasn't solved the heat issue yet on those chips. The Dual 200MHz PPro I got in my room is retarded on the amount of heat it puts out. I don't even want to imagine a prescott.
I have to keep the celing fan on full speed and the window and door open at all times or it will nuke me. The only solution for apple if it where to use x86 is that new Pentium M. But if apple goes X86, will they release OS X for the x86 ? or will it simply be a hack to get it to run ?. How will apple keep hold on the OS X market if they move to a chip everyone is using for there PC. Imagine actually running Mac Software on your PC. Why would people buy overpriced mac's when they could build a barebone PC and a probably warezed version of OS X and be able to run PC apps AND mac apps.
So how is apple to keep a lock on there stuff like they do now ? How much longer before you see "Apple Clones" again ?
Just some ideas :)
Oh yeah, and the Pentium II was actually a downslide from the Pentium Pro in some aspects. The PPro had faster cache (and more of it on some models). The only thing I know on the PII which is better is MMX and the clock speed. -
Re:is it bad...
My Pentium Pro 200MHz (Dual). It has provided me with nothing but good computing. For jokes I put in a bit of money and modded it up. It primarly sits in my room and computes things or acts as my media player.
I have some pictures of it too (They are 4.3 megapixel pictures)
Picture in the Dark
Picture with Light
If I really wanted too I could put in PII Overdrives in here and have a PII 333MHz with 66MHz Bus and Full speed L2 Cache. For now this will let me slashdot, IRC and listen to tunes.
Oh yeah it hosts www.solosoft.org pretty good too. The only issue I have with it is the extreme heat it pushes out. That was solved with some fans, the noise was solved by a hardcano 9 (OEM) in which I can independantly control the fans and turn them down when im in the room and don't feel like hearing it. -

Re:New trend ?
Im still one of the suckers who is running a 3Dfx Voodoo 5 5500 PCI on my Dual Pentium Pro 200MHz.
The card is simply perfect for what I do with it but I do wish that the SLI would of been completed for this card so it's not just seen as a 32mb Voodoo 4 with 1 166MHz GPU but a Voodoo 5 with 64mb of RAM and 2 166MHz GPU. Plus the AA would look pretty I bet on some games and such.
Oh well, I spent some extensive time reading on the internet and alot of people took note that this card's linux drivers will never be finished.
Quick Question tho: Does nvidia's new SLI use the same technology as 3Dfx's. I remember reading this somewhere that they where going to use the same SLI as the voodoo 5 (nvidia did buy out 3Dfx's technology). -
Re:Unmasked!
Well
... I did spend 4 days compiling KDE on a Dual Pentium Pro 200MHz
For Fun Mostly :) -
Re:um... I'd have a different perspective
I got a Dual Intel Pentium Pro 200MHz (512k Cache).
It never gets shut down and I constantly make it do stupid work. My "project" of the month this time is to try to decrypt some simple encryption.
It's got 2 6gb HDD's (Maxtor and IBM). A 3Dfx Voodoo 5 5500 PCI, SB 16 Digital 4.1 and a Network card.
I mostly use it in my room for most forms of media (movies, music, internet browsing). It works perfectly for the price I payed for it (50 bucks Canadian).
Although it's not the most practical machine for games and such it does a good job at doing "normal" work here and there.
I actually modded it up and made a window and put in some glow fans and a Hardcano 9 inside of it for jokes. Even when I do push it down to a dedicated server i'll leave in some of the mods just so my server "glows".

Re:Conservative and don't like Debian?
It took me 3 days to compile KDE 3.3 on my Dual Pentium Pro 200MHz 512k This was in debian linux of course to actually see how long it would take.
I was surprised that it only took 4 days but oh well guess I got a better CPU then you :D or CPU's in that matter

Re:Where did the name come from?
Last time I checked
... Pent = 5 ... ium (to add a coolness to it) means 586 ... since the last was a 486 (which would be called a Quadium if they used the same naming scheme). Technically anything over a PPro would be a Sexium ... I guess the name pentium stuck tho. You talk with most people they go "oh my computer is a Pentium I,II,III,IV" etc etc
I got no proof that this is really why ... but it kinda makes sense in a way.
Oh also PPro 4 life

Re:Would it work with my computer ?
You have NO clue what I make this machine do
;)
A - It hosts my ever so unpopular website - www.solosoft.org
B - It hosts my DNS for my ever so unpopular website - www.solosoft.org
C - It hosts a BIG Gallery with over 500 images - Gallery
D - It runs Windowmaker
E - It Runs a Mail Server
F - It Runs a news server
G - It runs a IRCD (irc.solosoft.org)
H - SSH
Why have a machine idle ? Mas well have it do somthing. I have 5 fans in there and it keeps cool enough. -

Re:If history shows...
Exactly. My Dual Pentium Pro 200MHz Machine is perfect for what I need to do. Yet people tell me all the time that I need to update. I tell them why ?. There answer is always "So you can play games". Here is the thing, the only games I play is like little ones like Pingus and sometimes some small java/flash games.
People don't understand that you don't need a top of the line computer to do simple tasks. Maybe if they removed some of the bloaty spyware bogging down there computer it wouldn't run like a 386.
:D -
Would it work with my computer ?
I have a Dual Pentium Pro 200MHz Computer. It has a 32mb GeForce 2MX 400 in it (the card is broken so the nvidia drivers won't work. I did manage to get it to work by underclocking it 10MHz and only using the nv drivers provided by X. It seems to work well now). It has 192mb of RAM and a 17" Monitor. Would one of those cards be able to work quickly and well... fast enough to watch full screen TV. Since my TV is only a small 13 inch I want to use my computer to watch it since the screen is bigger (and nicer).
So could I watch full screen tv smoothly ... or is it outa the option for my old PPro ? -
Re:Hooray for inefficient power supplies!
I know what you mean Solosoft my main desktop in my room is a Dual Pentium Pro 200MHz. I have never seen a little 200MHz desktop push out so much heat in my life.
I have 2 200MHz Pentium Pro's running at 200MHz. I have 5 fans total inside of the case (large tower). The second leading heat source is the PSU. That thing must be running near full power since it's 250w and im running 1 120mm fan , 4 80mm fans (2 of them the cool blue light ones). 2 HDD's a GeForce 2MX 400 Fan and whatever else little gizmos are running in there.
If I close my door and my window and leave for about an hour, my room is unbearably hot. I open my door and you can feel the heat pushing out into the rest of the house.
This nifty idea of cooling down some of the computer components sounds like a good idea.
It is kinda nice in the winter tho. I live in northern ontario and I can keep my window open any time and my room still remain a cozy ~ 20c.
Anyone else got any cool "computer" furnace stories :) im sure some people have it worse then me. -
Re:jup
haha
... me too ... same box Dual PPro 200MHz. These PPros are insanely powerfull for it's age. The only problem im having is heat controll.
I got a front intake fan and a out fan plus 2 80mm fans on my CPU's. I also installed an extra 120mm fan on my PSU. There is no keeping this machine cool.
I do just about all the same stuff as you do too and it's nice and quick. Linux does a good job at SMP working. I like how it divides the workload so well.

You know those pentium pro boards support PII Overdrive chips. They can also get a conversion kit and run a 533MHz Celeron. Quite the amazing chipset and chip for it's time.
Long live Pentium Pro !! -

Re:The main problem: Drinking the Kool-Aid
I like the background music for the Windows XP install. It's actually not too bad.

What about Shockwave ?
FlashMX is fine
... but it would be nice to have shockwave on Linux without having to emulate it or hack it up.
The one thing I miss is all my nice shockwave games I play on my windows machine.
Shockwave Pong Game
They can forward flash to linux but c'mon ... you know you all want shockwave. Plus all the nifty games you can play like the cool ninja game where your a stick man and you get to fight other stick men ...
Classic
oh well my 2 cents
