tinfoil hat !!
are you aware of the governm, ent conspiracy relating to tinfoil hats you see they supposedly cover the mind conrtol rays from the secret death satalites but they actually amplify the secret telsa death ray so that the government can kill those that know the truth while leaving their servants like katz and taco to rule the world without the tinfoil hats because the government is actually conspiring to create an anti-conspiracy conspiracy advocating the tinfoil hats as a means of mind control because instead of takeing wawy the mind contorl rays the tinfoil hats actually amplify them so that thje government can peer into your mind and make you work in line with them and control all that they hold sacred so that you will simply become a mindless drone of the worldwide government conspiracy yes that's what the UN is a worldwide governemnt conspiracy designed by monica lewinsky who is actually a secret cia officer designed to steal missile launch codes from bill clinton so that the cia will be able to have control over the us nuclear missile aresonal so that the un and the new world order headed by the us nsa and cia will be able to hold control over the world via a long range interncontrinental ballistic missile range specifically designed to oppress the peoples into creating a workforce so that the rich shall prosper and the poor shall be forced into nazi-style deathcamps for trying to expose the truth and you will be send to the end of the world and back to expose the truth and nobody will listen because of the tinfoil hat conspiracy and the amplified government mind control rays from the secret nasa death satalites.
Oh man, that was some bad $3 crack.

Re:Another step in the arms race
How can I mask my IP number when going online (through IRC, web, napster, etc.)? And I mean really anonymous--no logs to be revealed under court order.
I sometimes use a socks{4|5} anonymous server. They are really hard to find, but they do mask your IP under anything you can find a client for (irc, telnet, ftp, etc.), a lot of the anonymous socks servers get abused alot so they don't stay around for an extended period of time, ussually have to find a new one every week or so.
They do mask your IP well (it appears to be coming from the socks server), but under a court order they might be able to get your IP from the "anonymous" socks server. It isn't full proof, but it can help you in some sisuations.
there is huge listing out there of anonymous and free socks avaiable on the Internet, also there is free shell accounts. These both appear to "mask" your IP, but the server that you are bouncing from can grab your IP if they really wanted to (some have a no-log-ip policy, some don't), also make sure the shell/socks proxy you are "bouncing" off allows this, some sites "forget" to secure them probably and they get posted on this list, then 100 script kiddies start trading p0rn though them and it ends up in a big mess...
The only other thing I know of would be FreeNet -
server51 & sourceforge?
What's going to happen with server51 of Andover and sourceforge of VA? They seem to have the same purpose and whatnot
IMHO, I think server51 is a lot cleaner and more organized .. sourceforge seems like a mess to me when I browse randomly looking for stuff. Maybe the best direction for them to take is specializing s51 to a certain type of project, while making sourceforge the catchall of project hosting services.
Regardless, we'll never know the real opinions of those being affected by this acquisition. Personally, it would be nice to know what scoop (freshmeat & s51) really thinks about this hoopla.

alternative providers
I know SourceForge is good for the OSS projects. But does anyone have any recommendations for a good OSS orientated commercial provider? I checked out Voxel Dot Net and they look pretty sweet. Anyone have any comments?

the great OSS experiment
It's great that open source software is getting this opportunity to prove that it can be competitive. About a month ago Slashdot posted an article about SourceForge and it kinda slipped by me. I just checked SourceForge out after someone mentioned the site on irc.worldforge.org (no relation
:)
VA Linux is NOT joking about making open source work. If open source fails--turns out unable to compete in the long run (quite unlikely IMHO)--it will not be for lack of effort or commitment on VA's part.
I think the SourceForge FAQ offers a lot insight into VA's vision, as seen by the guys at SourceForge. If you haven't checked this out, do it. The SourceForge site may be the OSS "killer app" of 2000. (once again MHO)
