Re:The day is here already....
If you check http://www.spatz-tech.de/spatz/spatz.htm the website, you see that the devices are still on sale - just more of them and newer kit. I think it's called the HDMI3X, HDTVX and so on.

Re:The day is here already....
There is another method to get round the HDCP trap, which is to buy one of the Spatz boxes - there's no way that it could be embargoed - the point of the device is to enable legacy devices to receive HDCP output. That is not illegal, or unethical.
If you follow the link to the DVI MAGIC page, you get a 404 page. It also doesn't appear to be listed among their current HD offerings, or at least not by that name. Gone also is the DVIHDCP box referenced by engadget's source.
Keep in mind that that article was written on July 15th, 2005. They may have gotten their equivalent of a cease and desist order by now. -

Re:What about HDCP?
Here's a HDCP remover box. You knew somebody was going to make one eventually. Uses the same HDCP/DVI decoder chip that goes into TV's, just instead of blasting the signal out to a tube/DLP/whatever it outputs a nice unencrypted signal right back to 2 DVI's. There'll be a HDMI-cable version soon I bet... if not, adapter cables are all over the place, HDMI and DVI are pin-compatible for video signal.

A Dongle that converts HDCP to VGA..... Hmmm
That'd be somthing like This then

Re:What this will causeDivX supports HD quality. Broadband and DVD+/-R are cheap enough now. All that is needed is a software crack for the HD content, or a hardware box to sit between the monitor and computer and record the HD signal (sort of like this one, but with a capture option. Those two products, while still expensive, if used together will allow recording of HDCP streams.)
Then there is this:HDCP Vulnerable? Since its inception, HDCP has been criticized by cryptographers and hackers who claim that the system suffers from profound vulnerabilities. While researching this story, we unearthed documents that described several types of straightforward attacks in great detail. Some claim that HDCP relies too heavily on a small array of keys that can be easily cracked through simple linear algebra, while others describe ways to capture encrypted transmissions for later decryption on a compromised display.

Re:No, only what he THINKS Apple will do
I wonder how long before we have a box which sits between your monitor and your video card which reports itself as HDCP compliant, but in reality outputs a digital signal for recording.
The box exists already, but it's illegal thanks to the DMCA. -
Re:HDMI Only?
I'm sure it wouldn't be long until somebody creates a little dongle that will convert HDMI to a S-Video or Component signal and defeats any DRM imposed at the same time.
why lose the quality by downconverting to svideo or component?
This box will strip the HDCP off an incoming DVI inut and output un-encrypted DVI. you can downconvert that if you want, or keep it as top notch 1080i/720p

Re:That really hurts HD-DVD
"Isn't it really just a matter of time before some clever hacker builds a relatively affordable HDMI-Analog converter box?" No, you can get one now: http://www.spatz-tech.de/spatz/dvi_magic.htm

A fix from our friends in Germany
http://www.spatz-tech.de/spatz/dvi_magic.htm
Magic de-HDCPed DVI. Completely illegal in the USA thanks to the DMCA, but the rest of the world can enjoy our content at full resolution. -
Re:Format war
Here you go:
here's the box
It probably IS illegal under the DMCA, so I should buy one now. -

No, I am not confusing anything.

Re:Only Takes One :)
You don't have to go to China.
German company Spatz sells DVI HDCP (HDCP-protected DVI in -> VGA out) and DVI Magic (HDCP-protected DVI in -> 2 x unprotected DVI out). They are a bit pricey right now, but I reckon if enough people ordered one, they could make it cheaper.
Anyway, I have no idea if these things are illegal and/or a breach of contract.
And: Yes, these were on boingboing a few days ago. -
