Let's see Khyber achieve the same (never WILL happen - he's a webchump "wannabe coder", nothing more, who talks a BIG GAME, but can't manage to perform the attacks he notes on ME, in MITM (or BGP I noted) - both of which I admitted hosts don't work on (neither do firewalls or antivirus/antispyware though)).

Yes - You can disable Windows Defender & substitute a better antivirus/antispyware that does *NOT* do that to hosts file!
(Plus, my program APK Hosts File Engine 9.0++ 32/64-bit http://start64.com/index.php?o... additionally PROTECTS the hosts file *IF* left running, above + beyond Windows' File Protection too).
* Antivirus programs = Ineffective & "REACTIVE TECHNOLOGY" (poor & the results above prove that much) vs. HOSTS as a "PROACTIVE TECHNOLOGY" by comparison!
(Hosts = proactive, in that they act for stopping threats BEFORE they can get to you by blocking their source online 1st before you can touch it - & what you can't touch, can't hurt you - plus, even *IF* you are infected already? 2nd: Caching DNS can be INACCURATE (updates can happen when sites change hosting providers in the 24++ hr. period it can TAKE to propogate DNS changes thru the worldwide system for it (13 root to all dns on the planet takes time)).
That's really only an issue if the old DNS server returns bad records now as opposed to not responding at all.

* It has a "speedup favorite sites" tab that takes your FAVORITE websites & places them in hosts, hardcoded, which is FASTER than remote dns lookups (& lightens loads on DNS servers too, bonus), keeps you secure/anonymized by keeping you off dns request logs too... for instance, I keep 24 that way @ the TOP of my custom hosts file (rest are 3,121,350++ blocked adbanner servers or known bad sites/servers etc.) - that equates to 2-3++ MILLION index searches (do the math).
That's MORE THAN ADEQUATE to get you speed that's BETTER than REMOTE DNS by far, since the majority of what's in a "huge hosts file" like mine, are blocked since they're bad (who CARES 'how fast' I "get to those" since I never intended to in the 1st place since they're known bad & blocked).
Windows 8 needs to have its "Windows Defender" disabled too (MS screwed the pooch on hosts with it) for hosts to work right with it, in addition to dnscache being cut also (Windows 8 sux though anyhow, lol).

As you pointed out: 99.999% of ISP DNS', don't, & aren't patched vs. Kaminsky bug either
(Even though a patch has been out for nearly a decade (due to MX records setup problems iirc)).
I use it because of that, in combination with custom hosts files which I have COMPLETE LOCAL CONTROL OVER!
(For extra speed, security, reliability, & even anonymity (vs. dns request logs OR to get around DNSBL's I may not like), & they do so more efficiently and DO MORE than any 1 browser addon does, minus their messagepassing & cpu + ram hogging overheads in slower usermode, since hosts are part of the kernelmode IP stack + the 1st resolver queried by the OS... heck with redundant SLOWER browser addons).
* OpenDNS + custom hosts files go together like 'bread & butter' for faster, better & more reliable, + safer websurfing, all the way around (& hosts fix dns security issues too - bonus) + DNS admins must love me (lol) - I lighten up their request loads too.
