APK Hosts File Engine 5.0++ 32/64-bit:

Download Site #1 -> http://start64.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=5851:apk-hosts-file-engine-64bit-version&catid=26:64bit-security-software&Itemid=74
or
Download Site #2 -> http://securemecca.com/public/APKHostsFileInstaller/2012_06_01/APKHostsFileEngineInstaller32_64bit.exe.zip
---
INSTALLATION:
a.) Extract its sfx installer file from the zipfile
b.) Run the installer from inside ANY folder you like, extracting the executables + datafiles to any folder you wish (usually one you create for it, doesn't matter where, but you MUST run it as administrator for FULL functionality (simple & the "read me" tab shows how easy THAT is to do))
c.) Then, & lastly - Run either the 32-bit OR 64-bit version (rightclick on the executable & set it to run as Administrator, OR, make a shortcut that can for FULL functionality (like write-protecting the hosts file, & more...))---
What's it do for you?
Custom hosts files gain me the following benefits (A short summary of where custom hosts files can be extremely useful):
---
1.) Blocking out malware/malscripted sites
2.) Blocking out Known sites-servers/hosts-domains that are known to serve up malware
3.) Blocking out Bogus DNS servers malware makers use
4.) Blocking out Botnet C&C servers
5.) Blocking out Bogus adbanners that are full of malicious script content
6.) Getting you back speed/bandwidth you paid for by blocking out adbanners + hardcoding in your favorite sites (faster than remote DNS server resolution)
7.) Added reliability (vs. downed or misdirect/poisoned DNS servers).
8.) Added "anonymity" (to an extent, vs. DNS request logs)
9.) The ability to bypass DNSBL's (DNS block lists you may not agree with).
10.) More screen "real estate" (since no more adbanners appear onscreen eating up CPU, Memory, & other forms of I/O + electricity too - bonus!)
11.) Truly UNIVERSAL PROTECTION (since any OS, even on smartphones, usually has a BSD drived IP stack).
12.) Faster & MORE EFFICIENT operation vs. browser plugins (which "layer on" ontop of Ring 3/RPL 3/usermode browsers - whereas the hosts file operates @ the Ring 0/RPL 0/Kernelmode of operation (far faster) as a filter for the IP stack itself...)
13.) Blocking out TRACKERS
14.) Custom hosts files work on ANY & ALL webbound apps (browser plugins do not).
15.) Custom hosts files offer a better, faster, more efficient way, & safer way to surf the web & are COMPLETELY controlled by the end-user of them.---
* The malwarebytes/hpHosts site admin another person/site hosting it (Mr. Steven Burn, a competent coder in his own right), said it's "excellent" in fact and has seen its code too...

a.) Extract its sfx installer file from the zipfile
b.) Run the installer from inside ANY folder you like, extracting the executables + datafiles to any folder you wish (usually one you create for it, doesn't matter where, but you MUST run it as administrator for FULL functionality (simple & the "read me" tab shows how easy THAT is to do))
c.) Then, & lastly - Run either the 32-bit OR 64-bit version (rightclick on the executable & set it to run as Administrator, OR, make a shortcut that can for FULL functionality (like write-protecting the hosts file, & more...))---
What's it do for you?
Steven Burn, a competent coder in his own right), said it's "excellent" in fact and has seen its code too...

gedit won't process hosts data correctly
Quoting you on this one, see my subject-line above, first:
"i use gedit, which is basically windows notepad except with syntax highlighting" - by crutchy (1949900) on Saturday August 25, @07:24PM (#41125669)
Which leads to my subject-line above here now vs. this from you in another post regarding my work here:
"had a squiz at your hosts file program... most of us just use notepad or gedit, but whatever floats your boat." - by crutchy (1949900) on Friday August 24, @10:47PM (#41119123) FROM -> http://slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=3058625&cid=41119123
Which PER MY SUBJECT-LINE ABOVE proves I was correct on gedit also - it's NOT scriptable, & thus, just like notepad.exe, won't PROPERLY process custom hosts file data doing:
---
1.) Deduplication/Normalization
2.) Sorting of data
3.) Filtration of bulk useless junk characters & comments& more (like write protecting the hosts file every 1/2 second)...
---
* Ah, yes - it is NOT easy, being "World-Class", like me, I tell you... lol!
APK
P.S.=> Hence (again) WHY I built this program in both 32-bit AND 64-bit form to do it:
And, it does it FAST (under 1 minute if you have a FIOS connection & omit doing the optional "convert & filter" stage)...

Are you blind?
"the comment you link oesn't show anything about the indentation bug or a simpler way to code your string reversal" - by crutchy (1949900) on Saturday August 25, @07:22PM (#41125659)
Sure it does... lol - see the SUBJECT-LINE of this post & see subject-line above here too, lol:
http://tech.slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=3058625&cid=41121375
I was WELL aware of how that's done but again: Imo, doing that is NOT programming imo, if you're using built in functions (plus their call overheads) vs. writing routines yourself!
Put it this way, & I said much the same in another post to you here -> http://slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=3058625&cid=41126057
I.E.-> I could have used SQLite or BDE to do a BIG PART of the work in this app (normalization/deduplication via SELECT DISTINCT SQL queries)... but, instead, I opted to DO IT MYSELF & have no extra moving parts or anyone else's work doing the work for me!

Is it my fault I made an excellent program
That does the job in less than 1 minute for custom hosts file creation? Less than 1 minute IF you have a FAST network connection (ala FIOS), & if you omit the "convert & filter" stage (optional, but GUARANTEES pristine data, 100%... omitting it, I can only guarantee 98++%, but it too usually comes out 100% on import as well).
One that's good enough to be featured on an exclusively 64-bit programs hosting site here:
??
One that's good enough for 2 security-oriented sites (malwarebytes' hpHosts -> http://hosts-file.net/?s=Download &/or securemecca -> http://hostsfile.org/hosts.html ) that create custom hosts file data for import to host!
That's done in BOTH 32-bit + 64-bit models???
* Face it - you WISH you were me... lol!
(It's not MY FAULT EITHER, that you're nothing but a "ne'er-do-well" ac troll...)

YOUR MISTAKES:
---
A.) It's impossible for "APK Hosts File Engine 5.0++" to be written in Visual Basic 3.x (since that's a 16-bit development environs, & the program is 32-bit OR 64-bit, depending on the version you run AND THE DOWNLOAD PAGE SHOWS IT'S 64-bit) -> http://start64.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=5851:apk-hosts-file-engine-64bit-version&catid=26:64bit-security-software&Itemid=74
AND
B.) The http socket stream only "masks" itself as Netscape, but it's not netscape 4...

P.S.=> Of course, trolls like you are only stating what you are to *try* to "upset me", but you're only making yourselves look stupid (and I know, you could care less, since you're posting as ac's, hence WHY you are - so the stupidity of what you're saying doesn't "stick" to you personally)

DelphiXE apps don't use VBRUN300.DLL
You failed right off, right there, lol - not interpreted code to begin with... & that?
VBRUN300.DLL's a 16-bit runtime library for VB 3.x, not a 32 or 64 bit executable, which IS what I wrote here -> http://start64.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=5851:apk-hosts-file-engine-64bit-version&catid=26:64bit-security-software&Itemid=74
AND THE PAGE THERE SHOWS THAT MUCH!
(You fail, badly... liar!)
The program can be run 1 of 2 ways (the first I don't guarantee absolutely 100% accuracy, though most of the time it WILL be that way, unless the sources change their site data, since some do "screen scrapes" rather than file downloads is why):
---
1.) Run it doing IMPORT, & then ONLY the 1st STAGE of the "Normalize" tab - this takes literally, under 2 minutes (faster if you have a FAST internet connection & by FAR with FIOS) - however, I don't guarantee the data being 100% uniform in form of by record format this way.
or
2.) Do the SAME AS ABOVE, but, do DO the "Convert & Filter" (This ASSURES 100% data output accuracy even if the sites change their format)... this does 11 string operations on EVERY SINGLE LINE ITEM RECORD in the data taken in for a custom hosts file (this, takes time, but does guarantee data accuracy being perfect, or rather, as perfect as I knew how to make it after working with hosts files for nearly 20++ yrs. now). This can take up to 10 minutes... on an Intel Core I7 920 CPU @ 2.67ghz stock speed (mine).
---
I did a post on it, you must have missed it (says tricks in its subject line).
APK
P.S.=> LMAO - didn't you realize the site that hosts it (1 of 3, the other 2 are security sites by malwarebytes/hpHosts & securemecca) SHOWS it is a 64-bit native executable?
Guess not & it FLOORED you... lol! apk

* The "wannabe admin" LordLimecat BLEW IT on gpedit (group policies) ability to set parse autoexec &/or logon scripts to migrate ANY FILE, including hosts, from a central location!
AND
If you want more current updates? Taskscheduler can do that too... as I had to point out to "armchair admin" LordLimecat (who called others that, lol, oh the "PROJECTION" he was doing was SO APPARENT, I had to spank him with it, for his reprehensible trollery!)
Of course?
There's also this that I created that can do the same, AND, make the centrally located pristine fresh nomalized/deduplicated uniform entries sorted copy in the 1st place too:
* Enjoy the program, but more importantly, the added extra speed, security, reliability, & even anonymity to an extent (vs. DNS request logs) it gives you, the end user of custom hosts files...
APK
P.S.=> The latter one in my program? That's 1 thing the "armchair admin" (since LordLimecat called anyone who uses a custom host file that, & ended up with "egg on his face" blowing it on "things networking" above) will NEVER be able to do!
How so?
Well, since there's 1 simple fact:
Admins/techs?
They're JUST USERS WITH A BETTER PASSWORD & merely "use" what coders like myself CREATE FOR THEM TO USE... period/fact!

Data PERFECTION reigns... apk
I eliminate uncertainty - but not the further possibility of it from my sources (intentional or not, if they chaged things in their site even).
I eliminate it, via redundancy & safety for 100% absolutely assured accuracy in the "convert & filter" stage, longest of all, but you MAY be able to get away with it (I did just now on a partial import, 100% clearn data), & for what it filters out, & being safe/sure - my posts lists it when I post about the app in the details section.
* Speed's nice - but, in matters of a datafile (the end goal here), it's garbage in/garbage out is a no-no!
THE Absolute "no-no"...
Again - Making the file perfect IS the goal, above all else... data sanity.
(My program -> http://start64.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=5851:apk-hosts-file-engine-64bit-version&catid=26:64bit-security-software&Itemid=74 does that when run WITH Convert & Filter, rather than without - then, it gets done well under 2 minutes time)
APK
P.S.=> I am only reiterating now, what I said before: To assure 100% absolute perfection of the output, even to efficiency 100% no fat all business hosts file, you do the Convert & Filter, 10 minutes of your time.
For 98%++ or better?
Get done under 2 minutes time tops, & Import + Normalize/Deduplicate & save via rightclick on output screen...

"Also while I already had this DLL installed, VBRUN300.DLL seems to be locked (in use) by the tool." - by Anonymous Coward on Tuesday August 21, @04:23PM (#41073071)

How would it affect making a custom hosts file or using one?
