Imo @ least? Data Perfection, reigns
I eliminate uncertainty - but not the further possibility of it from my sources (intentional or not, if they chaged things in their site even).
I eliminate it, via redundancy & safety for 100% absolutely assured accuracy in the "convert & filter" stage, longest of all, but you MAY be able to get away with it (I did just now on a partial import, 100% clearn data), & for what it filters out, & being safe/sure - my posts lists it when I post about the app in the details section.
* Speed's nice - but, in matters of a datafile (the end goal here), it's garbage in/garbage out is a no-no! THE Absolute "no-no"...
(Again - Making the file perfect IS the goal, above all else... data sanity. My program -> http://start64.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=5851:apk-hosts-file-engine-64bit-version&catid=26:64bit-security-software&Itemid=74 does that when run WITH Convert & Filter, rather than without - then, it gets done well under 2 minutes time)
APK
P.S.=> I am only reiterating now, what I said before: To assure 100% absolute perfection of the output, even to efficiency 100% no fat all business hosts file, you do the Convert & Filter, 10 minutes of your time. For 98%++ or better? Get done under 2 minutes time tops, & Import + Normalize/Deduplicate & save via rightclick on output screen...

Downmods hiding you BLEW IT, LordLimecat?
Here http://slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=3058625&cid=41066165 and here too http://tech.slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=3058625&cid=41054899
* The "wannabe admin" LordLimecat BLEW IT on gpedit (group policies) ability to parse autoexec &/or logon scripts to migrate ANY FILE, including hosts, from a central location - AND, if you want more current updates? Taskscheduler can do that too...
(Of course, there's also this that I created that can do the same, AND, make the centrally located pristine fresh nomalized/deduplicated uniform entries sorted copy in the 1st place too-> http://start64.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=5851:apk-hosts-file-engine-64bit-version&catid=26:64bit-security-software&Itemid=74 )

P.S.=> The latter one in my program? That's 1 thing the "armchair admin" (since LordLimecat called anyone who uses a custom host file that, & ended up with "egg on his face" blowing it on "things networking" above) will NEVER be able to do, since face 1 simple fact: Admins/techs? #1 - The malwarebytes/hpHosts site admin a person/site in the security community's hosting it (Mr. Steven Burn, a competent coder in his own right), said it's "excellent" in fact and has seen its code too... Write him yourselves should anyone doubt any of this -> services@it-mate.co.uk , or see his site @ http://hosts-file.net/?s=Download

Try THIS on for size, since it's ALL about the topic @ hand (I program in LITERALLY around a dozen languages by the by... do you?):

(I used Python & learned it, literally, in about 2-3 days time to help my nephew put in errtrapping, multithreaded design, & some niceties in its "commandline interface" - but, do I *think* it's better or more capable than the languages in my subject-line above? Hell no... lol, no way!)

3.) You could also setup taskscheduler to do the same periodically copying from a central location on a network for clean new fresh updated custom hosts files.
4.) Creating them & putting new fresh clean updated hosts files in a central LAN or WAN location for purposes of the above?

Get back to me then (on the "12th of never" & "when the hand on the clock strikes 13", lol)...

Agreed, & not agreed (how/when/where/why)
You want to read this:
"Hosts was never meant to be used for blocking sites, but it works well enough as a consequence and the behaviour should be left alone. Whatever the user puts in there, should work as intended. I don't fucking CARE that it's used for malware. Fight malware in other ways." - by TheRealGrogan (1660825) on Sunday August 19, @11:45PM (#41050749)
First - PLEASE READ THIS IN ITS ENTIRETY you MAY find it "enlightening" as to the value of custom hosts files - get back to me, especially IF you can disprove any of its points:
http://tech.slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=3058625&cid=41048439
Then?
See this app I wrote in both 32-bit & 64-bit form
(Since it can also be used to create a CENTRALLY LOCATED PRISTINE & CLEAN FRESH custom hosts file FOR PROPOGATION ACROSS A NETWORK EVEN, easily, via GpEdit, taskscheduler, or other native tools to the OS, in this case, Windows):
How/When/Where/How/Why per my subject-line above on LAN/WAN environs even for these gains - I.E.-> Custom hosts files gain me the following benefits (A short summary of where custom hosts files can be extremely useful):
---
1.) Blocking out malware/malscripted sites
2.) Blocking out Known sites-servers/hosts-domains that are known to serve up malware
3.) Blocking out Bogus DNS servers malware makers use
4.) Blocking out Botnet C&C servers
5.) Blocking out Bogus adbanners that are full of malicious script content
6.) Getting you back speed/bandwidth you paid for by blocking out adbanners + hardcoding in your favorite sites (faster than remote DNS server resolution)
7.) Added reliability (vs. downed or misdirect/poisoned DNS servers).
8.) Added "anonymity" (to an extent, vs. DNS request logs)
9.) The ability to bypass DNSBL's (DNS block lists you may not agree with).
10.) More screen "real estate" (since no more adbanners appear onscreen eating up CPU, Memory, & other forms of I/O + electricity too - bonus!)
11.) Truly UNIVERSAL PROTECTION (since any OS, even on smartphones, usually has a BSD drived IP stack).
12.) Faster & MORE EFFICIENT operation vs. browser plugins (which "layer on" ontop of Ring 3/RPL 3/usermode browsers - whereas the hosts file operates @ the Ring 0/RPL 0/Kernelmode of operation (far faster) as a filter for the IP stack itself...)
13.) Blocking out TRACKERS
14.) Custom hosts files work on ANY & ALL webbound apps (browser plugins do not).
15.) Custom hosts files offer a better, faster, more efficient way, & safer way to surf the web & are COMPLETELY controlled by the end-user of them.---
As I noted earlier - also using it on networks? Cake!
---
A.) Install & run it
B.) Do updating the hosts file from a PRISTINE fresh import (to a CENTRAL location on a LAN/WAN too, via these methods) of blocking data vs. malware & malicious content, botnet C&C servers, bogus DNS servers, phishing/spamming sources, trackers, adbanners & more, as often as you like:
C.) Then, lastly - On said network via native to OS tools for network-wide propogation of fresh clean updated hosts files that program yields IF you only installed it on a "central server" for clean hosts for all nodes/workstations/servers:
I.E.-> Centrally managed hosts files? Easy as pie via logons scripts, or parse of autoexec in Windows @ bootup via GPEdit & group policies company-wide!
OR
Using taskscheduler on each workstation/server node periodically
OR of course,

Well my friend, there IS this though

OR of course, using this app on workstation/server endpoints locally as well as a possible.
(Take your pick!)
---
Below - I list a TON of DNS faults below, you know of them from it, and hosts actually COMPLIMENT & OVERCOME them
---
1.) Power usage on DNS software on same system OR especially separate machines
2.) Host-domain resolves being faster than calling out to remote DNS servers for hardcoded favorites (hdd or ssd access/seek is far faster locally too)
3.) No separate "layered on" added stuff over the IP stack IN Ring 0/RPL 0/kernelmode like firewalls or DNS programs do, since hosts are only a FILTER for the IP stack & good layered security/defense in depth!
4.) No separate "layered on" added stuff over the browser addons like AdBlock or even IE TPL's IN Ring 3/RPL 3/usermode like adblock, since hosts are only a FILTER for the IP stack & good layered security/defense in depth!
5.) Reliability vs. recursive DNS servers setups in faults driven by DNS poisoning attacks (hardcodes of hosts file records of your favorite sites do that).
---
( & more... FAR more, see below - it compliments & overcomes issues in firewalls, adblock, DNS servers + works with them, transparently/seamlessly/smoothly @ the MOST efficient layer possible - the IP stack itself!)
The speedup part hardcoding in favorites (which also aids reliability) is there too!
Simply by blocking out ad banners (which you KNOW have been infested more than a few times the past few years, partial list's below, & also CPU, RAM, & other forms of I/O killers as well as screen realestate stealers, etc. & more... see next list):
I.E.-> Custom hosts files gain me the following benefits (A short summary of where custom hosts files can be extremely useful):

12.) Faster & MORE -
THIS "neuters that" easily
By updating the hosts file from a PRISTINE fresh import (from a CENTRAL location on a LAN/WAN too, via these methosd) of blocking data vs. malware & malicious content, botnet C&C servers, bogus DNS servers, phishing/spamming sources, trackers, adbanners & more, as often as you like:
There's other methods also, via native to OS tools for network-wide propogation of fresh clean updated hosts files that program yields IF you only installed it on a "central server" for clean hosts for all nodes/workstations/servers:
I.E.-> Centrally managed hosts files? Easy as pie via logons scripts, or parse of autoexec in Windows @ bootup via GPEdit & group policies company-wide!
OR
Using taskscheduler on each workstation/server node periodically
APK
P.S.=> There you go... it all works, GUI easily from my app, all the way out to any endpoint PC/Server on a LAN/WAN even... often as you like & CLEAN/FRESH too! apk

Using this app I wrote for hosts file mgt. via an easy to use GUI that's BOTH 32 & 64-bit code -> http://start64.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=5851:apk-hosts-file-engine-64bit-version&catid=26:64bit-security-software&Itemid=74

That's with native OS tools @ login
It could be added to Windows task scheduler too as often as one likes using native facilities in the OS doing what I said also... always MORE than 1 way to skin a cat!

You can use my application "APK Hosts File Engine 5.0++" on workstations nodes for example, & do it as often as you like really:

Just did a TOTAL run (11 minutes)... apk
For deduplication/normalization over its usual intake of fresh/new records. Doing it now, so might as well give you the breakdown of its process run:
Here is the screenshot of each tab noted below so you know where each stage occurs -> http://start64.com/images/win64/security/apk-hosts-file-engine-1.png
---
IMPORT = 1 min. 15 seconds
NORMALIZATION/DEDUPLICATION = 15 seconds
CONVERT & FILTER (longest part, touches every record) = 9 minutes
SPEED UP FAVORITE SITES = 20 seconds (I do 20 of them)
SAVE = 10 seconds
---
Over 145,000 new records... around 11 minutes total runtime!
The "convert/filter" stage which gets rid of duplicates, bulk useless data like comments in hosts, and converts to the blocking IP address you want for records (options for the larger/slower 127.0.0.1 or the smaller/faster 0.0.0.0 exist), the sorts them alphabetically on blocking the known bad sites & more...
That's the "time killer" and CPU killer since it's largely string processing (but it's not bad either & most importantly it works!).
* It is extremely accurate too, that's the most important part &, it's "GUI EASY" to use...
(As I leave NO imported data records untouched, & make sure they are all correct, uniform, and deduplicated).
It takes less time, if you don't import in & work on data from sites that haven't updated their data the day you run it (hence the config screen, which is merely a set of checkboxes that tell it to IMPORT (or NOT) from any of the 12 sites it gets data from for custom hosts file creation...
APK
P.S.=> Over 1.8 million records, it's only a bit longer in the normalization/deduplication stage, that sends it up to 10-12 minutes on an Intel Core I7 920 QuadCore CPU running @ 2.67ghz here... apk

You're welcome, & good news (security sites)
2 are now hosting it -> http://hostsfile.org/hosts.html + http://hosts-file.net/?s=Download , plus Start64.com (an exclusively 64-bit program hosting site only) -> http://start64.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=5851:apk-hosts-file-engine-64bit-version&catid=26:64bit-security-software&Itemid=74
* Thus, so far, so good... she's a "hit" and, with the folks I really wanted to get it to in the 1st place since they have large following out there today (in our world of malware & online exploits galore out there now).
I.E.-> It's a program that has more than just potentials to do folks a LOT of good on several levels...
E.G.-> Especially in:
---
1.) Added/Regained speed/bandwidth
2.) Less electricity consumption vs. competing solutions like DNS + Browser addons like AdBlock (by blocking banners & more)
3.) Added "layered-security"/"defense-in-depth" vs. known sites-servers/hosts-domains that are known to serve up malwares (updated every 15 minutes here)
4.) Better reliability (vs. downed or dns poisoned redirected DNS servers)
5.) Protection vs. botnet C&C servers, bogus DNS servers malware makers use, & even better anonymity to an extent (vs. DNSBL's you feel are not right/just).---
& more...
APK
P.S.=> Perhaps one day soon, when Delphi Xe3 hits (which is soon)? I'll "port it" to MacOS X (I can already do THAT via Delphi Xe2), & Linux (used to be able to with Kylix, Borland discontinued it, BUT I could with FreePascal + Lazarus - I'll wait for Delphi Xe3 though)...
Anyhow/anyways - in ANY event?
Well... Enjoy the program, she's a "runner", & thanks for your time (+ patience since the trolls here downmod my posts on hosts files - my guess is many are malware makers themselves is why)
... apk

Why not? Login script merges'd be easy
GpEdit.msc makes THAT easy, via group policies (either parsing autoexec.bat OR logon scripts to copy over updates of the local custom HOSTS file)!
Then, UAC alone (since most users wouldn't be setup as local machine admins) + write protecting them in scripts'd be SIMPLE too, and would work vs. alterations - combine THAT with DNS filters (DNSBLs)? You have "layered protection"...
Another tool which could be used for custom hosts file central copy purposes that automates collecting the data needed?
Well - Here's one: By "yours truly" that's 100% free, & gains you MANY benefits of doing this (including reduced electricity costs, more speed/bandwidth, & "layered-security"/"defense-in-depth" vs. malicious sites-servers + more, see below for enumerated details): It makes the IMPOSSIBLE TASK of deduplication/normalization by hand, possible
Plus, FAR more from 1 single executable self-contained FAST non-interpreted code designed app (automates the entire custom hosts file creation process easily, then the above, would do the rest...):

21++ Advantages of HOSTS files

"BWAHAHAHAH! Can't fool me, the REAL apk warned me about you, ya low-down impostor!" - by Anonymous Coward on Sunday August 12, @08:39PM (#40968297)
See subject-line above... you're mistaken.
I like how Start64.com does their website:
Both In layout/aesthetics, and in principals:
They do ONLY 64-bit wares, not just 64-bit compatible with it - others post anything that runs on 64-bit OS, 32-bit or not (which has its place too)!
(Exceptions? Some - Hybrid Apps (mix of 32/64 bit in portions) - Exceptions are those of the class marshalled as an OLE server or instanced as a classic DLL segment, & driver or service (some might have 32-bit front ends as far as "hybrid" design. Some sites do more apps, 32-bit ware that runs ok on 64 bit OS' get included & displayed... which once more - has it's place too...)).
The program's a good one because of what the data it puts out can do for you in speed, security, reliability, & anonymity, to an extent (vs. DNSBL's & DNS Request Logs...)
* Above all else - Enjoy the program: Plus, faster, safer, & more reliable internet surfing from it... it really works because the IP stack itself works, as efficiently as possible.
APK
P.S.=> Besides - Who else posts in the style/format I do? Not many others... & not exactly like mine are, so, there you are...

Then, they either email notify members, put up warnings on their pages, & do IP warnings & redirectors onto the former IP address range to protect vs. the unscrupulous criminal bidding on that range to buy it to steal from users of say, online banking or shopping sites).
3.) Better "Layered-Security"/"Defense-In-Depth" via blocking host-domain based attacks by KNOWN bad sites-servers that are known to do so (which IS, by far, the majority of what's used by both users (hence the existence of the faulty but for most part working DNS system), AND even by malware makers (since host-domain names are recyclable by they, & the RBN (Russian Business Network & others)) were doing it like mad with "less than scrupulous", or uncaring, hosting providers)
4.) Better 'anonymity' to an extent vs. DNS request logs (not vs. DPI ("deep packet inspection"))
5.) The ability to circumvent unjust DNSBL (DNS Block Lists) if unjust or inconveniences a user.
6.) Protection vs. online trackers
7.) Better security vs. the DNS system being "dns poisoned/redirected" (a known problem for recursive DNS servers via port 51/53 misdirection)
8.) Write protecting the hosts file every 1/2 second (supplementing UAC) - even if/when you move it from the default location via this registry entry (which if done, can function ALMOST like *NIX shadow passwords because of this program):
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\Tcpip\Parameters
And changing the "DataBasePath" parameter there (I do this moving it to a faster media, a "true SSD" using DDR-2 RAM, in the 4gb Gigabyte IRAM I have).
9.) Automatic downloading & Alphabetic sorting of hosts files' records entries (for easier end user mgt. manually) from 15 reliable sources (of 17 I actually use).
10.) Manual editing of all files used (hosts to import list, hosts itself in its def

Custom hosts files gain me the following benefits (A short summary of where custom hosts files can be extremely useful):

1.) Blocking out malware/malscripted sites
2.) Blocking out Known sites-servers/hosts-domains that are known to serve up malware
3.) Blocking out Bogus DNS servers malware makers use
4.) Blocking out Botnet C&C servers

6.) Getting you back speed/bandwidth you paid for by blocking out adbanners + hardcoding in your favorite sites (faster than remote DNS server resolution)
7.) Added reliability (vs. downed or misdirect/poisoned DNS servers).
8.) Added "anonymity" (to an extent, vs. DNS request logs)
9.) The ability to bypass DNSBL's (DNS block lists you may not agree with).
10.) More screen "real estate" (since no more adbanners appear onscreen eating up CPU, Memory, & other forms of I/O too - bonus!)

The C&C servers "FLAME" uses are in my hosts
Debateable/Possibly: I wouldn't use hosts for INTERNAL networks unless I used it for "failover" purposes actually. I'd rely more on ActiveDirectory Services (which is, of course, DNS dependent). I'd keep it around as a 'failsafe' then only.
Hosts are good/better, for other things... mainly online "layered security"/"defense-in-depth", better speed/bandwidth + faster resolutions of IP addresses to host-domain names.
(I've posted it here many times before, but I wouldn't rely on them solely (though they're EASY to 'migrate' to end user rigs via logon scripts for example)).
APK
P.S.=> SORT of IMPORTANT, on that note (Since you mentioned hosts):
I just picked up the C&C server list that's known so far for the "FLAME" malware here:
http://www.securelist.com/en/blog/208193540/The_Roof_Is_on_Fire_Tackling_Flames_C_C_Servers
I integrated it into my hosts file - also for my roommate who uses Windows Server 2003 32-bit...
(However/Again: I am "impervious" so far @ least, via Windows 7 64-bit as I noted here in the reply you responded to, plus the patch for this issue -> http://www.start64.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=5779:update-for-windows-7-for-x64-based-systems-kb2718704&catid=38:64bit-update&Itemid=98 )
I built a new custom hosts file using that 1st url - just for "layered-security"/"defense-in-depth" purposes (what you can't touch can't hurt you) as well as firewall rules tables for the IP addressed servers it communicates with also...
I can't "proof myself" any better than that @ this point, since my systems are always "security-hardened" anyhow... apk

Jeremy Reimer and Thor SCHMUCK?
Now, as to your usual b.s. regarding Jeremy Reimer & Thor SCHMUCK, here is my std. reply disproving your b.s. troll:
"THOR SCHMUCK"? LMAO, he refused to answer my points there when I replied (on PING.EXE, SPYBOT SEARCH & DESTROY, which violate CA's 21 point test via ping of death or altering HOSTS files, & MORE) on his own website... made him look QUITE poorly, easily. With facts, as is my usual style.
Also, my single app (of 40 freeware/sharewares I did years ago, some ending up as commercially sold products or code in them) was lowered to ZERO THREAT LEVELS after I passed all 21 questions for that @ CA no less!
Heck - that SINGLE APP of 40 or so I have written online to date?
It's NOT EVEN SCRIPTABLE FOR ATTACK - whereas by way of comparison? Others are creating apps like it also, in 64 bit no less, per this example thereof:
That one is though...
Does CA list it? Oh, wait a second - CA had to SELL OFF THEIR PC TOOLS DIVISION (it sucked is why, lol):
Thor SCHMUCK (degreeless wannabe that he is in the computer sciences) is, afaik, the one that submitted my app to CA as a malware!
(It was not intended by myself for that kind of use, I wrote it in good faith for a forums guy that wanted a way to launch OLD Apache server for Windows like a service, invisibly, & since that's only 1-2 lines of code to do? I did! It's not scriptable for attack though, period (no argc/argv code in it is why)).
CA, now there's a story. Ask Computer Associates about their being caught in a millions of dollars financial/accounting scam, here:
http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/215116/computer_associates_cofounder_led_22.html
Real reputable company, eh?
In fact, I passed every single one of the 21 questions for removal of my ware from their site, & all they ended up doing was lowering it down to a "zero threat level"...
I'm not too concerned about it, because they also do it to others (along with other Antivirus/Antispyware companies, and we all know how "effective" those are, especially lately vs. today's "blended threats").
In fact? I am actually in GOOD COMPANY on that account as others have had it happen to they as well!
Ask Dr. Mark Russinovich of Microsoft or Nir Softer of NIRSOFT if they've ever had their numerous apps libeled along with themselves in the same manner... (answer = they have, so I suppose I am in "good company" here, eh?)
Thor Schrock, lol, another "credible expert" (NOT): That guy doesn't even have a CSC degree or even a single A+ type certification to his name.
All I can say to and about Thor SCHMUCK, is this: GOD BLESS TY TYMKOVICH (LOL, run that by him, it ought to be good for a laugh... the fool got wickedly SUCKERED by him to the tune of $5,500)...

Not my keyboard, since I use that a lot: I remap it with this tool -> http://www.start64.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=493:kbdedit-the-best-keyboard-layout-editor&catid=21:64bit-system-software&Itemid=73
(64-bit too)
* For #'s, I use the number pad (helps data entry usually to use that is why, so might as well train for that 'side skill' while I am @ it!) - my top row of keys instantly is mapped to their 'shifts'.
APK
P.S.=> There you go... for MOST of you, it may work like that, but not for me - things are NOT "all the same" wherever you go & some of us "operate a bit differently"... apk

gmhowell & the trolltalk.com AC stalkers: READ
My single app (of 40 freeware/sharewares I did years ago, some ending up as commercially sold products or code in them) was lowered to ZERO THREAT LEVELS after I passed all 21 questions for that @ CA no less!
In fact, Dr. Mark Russinovich &/or Nir Softer of NIRSOFT have had this happen to their applications too (pstools & others M.R. wrote, & many Nir Sofer wrote - but they are "double edged swords" tools, just like ping is!) Write either of them, they won't & DON'T deny it (and they don't like it, neither do I).

Saying I was raped here -> http://developers.slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=2619084&cid=38694116 & other libel of myself's going to have me have to take care of this, and you with it, one way or another... period.
Count on it. Spending money on "stop orders" with attorneys is better spent on gassing up the car & taking a little trip to pay those who libel others a nice visit!
APK
P.S.=> There's also a pack of trolls here, literally ADMITTED trolls, they run a domain called "trolltalk.com" in fact!
In THIS case, ac trolling me? Pay attention to "C" below, on gmhowell - he's stalking me via AC trolling posts!
(gmhowell, tomhudson, webmistressrachel, squiggleslash, ountertrolling, mcgrew, & other registered LUSER 'guises'),
They regularly cheat/game the moderation system, literally, in 2 ways:
---
1.) Modding themselves up in collusion/teams
2.) Modding down those they are stalking/harassing/trolling
---
Think it's bullshit? Ok, fine - here's where they LITERALLLY ADMIT TO ALL OF THE ABOVE & how they cheat the mod system here:
---
A.) countertrolling telling others how to moddown opponents as registered lusers 1st, then to logout to save your karma/cookie state of your reg'd luser account, & then to troll others via ac replies ->
