Re:Not to worry!
"When the German Kaiser asked in 1912 what the quarter of a million Swiss militiamen would do if invaded by a half million German soldiers, a Swiss replied: shoot twice and go home. Switzerland also had a decentralized, direct democracy which could not be surrendered to a foreign enemy by a political elite. Some governments surrendered to Hitler without resistance based on the decision of a king or dictator; this was institutionally impossible in Switzerland. If an ordinary Swiss citizen was told that the Federal President--a relatively powerless official--had surrendered the country, the citizen might not even know the president's name, and would have held any "surrender" order in contempt" -- Stephen P. Totally incorrect. Please stop spouting nonsense and learn to read
Took me all of 5 minutes to find good, relevant information. -
Re:Hundred Millions or Hundred Thousands?
Hitler's first move was to confiscate firearms from the Jews. Here is something I just googled up on the subject: http://www.stephenhalbrook.com/article-nazilaw.pdf
The first step of every modern tyrant is to confiscate firearms. (Note, this is not to say that everyone who wants to confiscate weapons is a tyrant). Mao, Stalin, Hitler, Castro, etc.
The point is not that a guy with a handgun is going to stop a tank. There are 2 points to make:
1) A crowd the size of the protests currently happening in Iran actually is something to be feared if they are armed.
2) A complete reliance on the state for one's protection creates a complacency and an orwellian love for "big brother". This point is more subtle than the first, but the more I study the issue, the more I realize how important it is. If a person is forced to rely entirely on the state (usually a police force) for his/her protection, this is not a good thing. Responsible gun ownership reminds one that even though good police protection is a wonderful thing, if there were no police, one would still be able to get along with one's life. This autonomy from the state is a good thing. -
Re:Good Joke
Yeah, because allowing criminalization of gun ownership worked out real good for the Jews during the Hitler years.

You might think this was a fluke, and could never happen in our 'enlightened' society, but I see more and more similarities/parallels between the current U.S. Republic and the Weimar Republic every day. I especially love the printing of money (inflation) that is going on by the Fed in order to save us from a depression. In addition, only time will tell if Obama will relinquish all of those executive powers that Bush gathered to himself, I have little hope that he will. In a country where a trillions of dollars of monetization can be rammed down the throat of Congress, with little opportunity for "the People" to react, under the guise of an economic emergency, I can see plenty of other rights taken away in a similar fashion all in the name of safety and transparency.
I'll keep my suppressed AR-15, and 1000's of rounds of ammunition thank you. -

Nonsense.many places in europe (with virtually no legal gun ownership) are in fact much safer than the usa
No, that is just not the case. The average kill rate in Europe is rather high. You must count the fact that oppressive governments and war take more lives than civilians any day. And Europe is certainly a place that rates high there. With many wars over history, the latest notable being WWII, Europe accounts for millions of dead due to totalitariansm, which *never* tolerates citizens being able to defend themselves. It is because they cannot defend themselves that thes oppressive regimes can and do take hold there.
It is in fact the taking of arms from citizens that paved the way to the Killing of 20 million or so of Jews, Christians, and others who were defenseless. Meanwhile, just a few Jews in the Warsaw Ghetto held off the German Army for quite awhile.
Further, a question has to be asked, is it starting again? 112 automobiles per day average in 2006 burn in the suburbs of Paris, and Jews are again being attacked. (Google: "112 cars day paris suburbs")
Oh, there is so much more...

Re:Modded insightful? Gun control stupid?
Ok, swiss guy, maybe you can explain the Swiss Teen Rifle Competition. Looks to me like you're not allowed to open the government-issue ammo pack (which makes sense because that ammo is part of the national defense), but you're allowed and encouraged to go to your numerous rifle ranges and buy as much ammo as you want.

Re:Modded insightful? Gun control stupid? Many people have the mistaken impression that guns are too lightly regulated in the USA.
Not only do Americans tolerate a wide variety of restrictive laws, which vary state by state, they even have to pay for their own guns and ammunition!
Compare this to the Swiss experience.
Every Swiss man, on reaching age 20, is issued with a rifle to keep at home. That rifle is the SIG Strumgeweher (assault rifle) model 1990 (Stgw 90), a selective fire, 5.6 mm rifle with folding skeleton stock, bayonet lug, bipod, and grenade launcher. pic , pic, Google
The Stgw 90 is a real assault rifle in that it is fully automatic.
Gun control dogma claims that this would result in a bloodbath. As usual, the dogma is wrong.
Note also that Mainstream Media avoids reporting on the Swiss gun policy. After all, they don't want to undo all the work they have done for anti-gun forces over the years!
