    Doomsday cults are based on weird ambiguous predictions by lost civilizations, medieval seers, or some crazy dude who just knows how to rant in an entertaining manner:

    I turned to see the voice that spoke with me. Having turned, I saw seven golden lampstands.
    And among the lampstands was one like a son of man, clothed with a robe reaching down to his feet, and with a golden sash around his chest.
    His head and his hair were white as white wool, like snow. His eyes were like a flame of fire.
    His feet were like burnished brass, as if it had been refined in a furnace. His voice was like the voice of many waters.
    He had seven stars in his right hand. Out of his mouth proceeded a sharp two-edged sword. His face was like the sun shining at its brightest.
    When I saw him, I fell at his feet like a dead man. He laid his right hand on me, saying, "Don't be afraid. I am the first and the last, and the Living one. I was dead, and behold, I am alive forevermore."
     

    Against competition like that, some silly pattern in a computer clock simply doesn't rate!

    Larry has announced Perl6 will be released on Christmas day on some year in the near future. I obtained insider information that the release date is Christmas Day 2012, probably with a 3-day early release because so much progress has been made on the Parrot interpreter recently -- for a final release date of Dec 21, 2012.     Surprised that nobody has yet linked this to the Mayan 2012 prophecy, in which The world will end on Dec 21, 2012... I'm not a big believer in apocalypse prophecies, I think it's just one of Man's primal fears and along with death, probably one of the reasons religions were created.

    2012... They are *$(*#ed and you WIN! All Internet is now encrypted and unbreakable and everyone has multi-terabyte hard drives and multi-hundred Megabit or gigabit speeds to home. Uhh.. we'll die in 2012, haven't you heard?

    According to their calendar, the Maya believed that their world would end on Dec 21, 2012. Of all the dates put forth by prophets and cultures for a doomsday, this is one with an authentic almost eerie feel to it. But what will happen? A global cataclysm is one possibility. Presented here is enough information to help you decide - be you an expert or a beginner. That was only a misinterpretation, because their prophets had no clue about modern technology. Due to all data being encrypted after 2012, they seemed not to get any meaningful data from after that time, so they incorrectly concluded that there's no meaningful data after that time, because the world ended.

    According to the Mayans, who had an *extremely* accurate calendar (up to the point where they could determine astrological charts thousands of years in the future), the world is going to end on December 21st, 2012AD. If this is true, it won't really matter if Earth will expire by 2050, since it'll be gone, or everyone will have died, or both.

    The fact that their calendars and astrological charts were so correct gives a certain authenticity to this over, say, "THE WORLD IS GOING TO END IN 2000! OH MY GOD!@#$!@#$" and other more conspiratorial claims.

    According to the Mayans, who had an *extremely* accurate calendar (up to the point where they could determine astrological charts thousands of years in the future), the world is going to end on December 21st, 2012AD. If this is true, it won't really matter if Earth will expire by 2050, since it'll be gone, or everyone will have died, or both.

    This map was drawn by consulting much more ancient sources, rather than being drawn by Reis himself. Apparently it accurately mapped the coastline of Antarctica which has been completely covered in ice since before the Egyptian Pyramids were built. We know that the mapping of Antarctica's coastline is accurate thanks to seismic surveys that were carried out last century. Spooky eh?

    Since in the next few years 64 bit processors will be coming into the mainstream I think now is the time to start work on fixing the Year 2038 issue. Operating systems will need to be changed to move from 32 to 64 bit word lengths so why not take this oppertunity to switch from 32 bit to 64 bit times on Linux and *BSD (and any other Open Source operating systems you care to mention). A further advantage would be to take make better use of the extra bits and switch to milliseconds since 1970, instead of seconds. This extra precision could be useful for some applications and will still be good till 300,000,000 AD

    This is useable and sensible. I can see this.

    But we might not need to worry because of all of the other disasters that are proposed to be happening between now then then, including the end of the Maya Epoch (get your Mayan Date TShirt here, and the destruction of civilization by asteroids in 2028 (orbit info here, Seattle Times disinfo here, commentary here)

    And, with the crashomatic feature in MS OS software, the world will come to an end well before that when the MS .NET system gets hit with a succesful .NET virus that wipes out lots of data from the hard drives. Of course, it will be a MS email virus, that scans the network for vulnerable files.
