AFAIK, the only way to completely erase everything from a hard disk is to smash it into little pieces with a hammer. Even after a format data is accessable, if you know how to get it.
My company does work for the Ministry of Defence in the UK, if we have to swap out a NIC, for example, they won't release the dead card for at least two weeks so that any residual charge dissipates, otherwise information can be gleaned from the chips on the card!
I have been asked to sign a few NDAs, I just said "I'm taking them home to review them." I then never spoke of them again, and was never asked for them back.
This is what I did, and I was never asked again. BTW, I work for Apple and I can, quite safely, reveal that their new G5 will be out in Q2 2003 - it will have an AMD processor and the whole case is now shiny chrome.
I don't go on HL anymore either - was a good laugh back in the day though...
I wouldn't worry about getting modded down on this thread now - moderators are only interested in the current articles (he says as somone bitch-slaps him with a -1 offtopic).
Anyway, nice to see a familiar name;-) see you around !
I think it would be a lot cooler, albeit impractical with current technology, to actually record *everything*, i.e. everything you see, everything you hear, etc, from when you're born. You'd need a huge ammount of storage though:
Quick approximate calculations just for recording what you see at PAL resolution (720x576@25fps):
1 frame of PAL = 1.2MB 25 x 1.2MB = 30MB = 1 second 30MB x 60 = 1.8GB = 1 minute 1.8GB x 60 = 108GB = 1 hour 108GB x 24 = 2.6TB = 1 day 2.6TB x 7 = 18.2TB = 1 week 18.2TB x 4 = 72.8TB = 1 month 72TB x 12 = 873.6TB = 1 year 873.6TB x 70 = 61,152 Terrabytes (61.2 Petabytes)
Engineers are working on software to load every photo you take, every letter you write - in fact your every memory and experience - into a surrogate brain that never forgets anything.
I presume you must have to add stuff to this 'archive' manually? What happens if you forget? I know I probably would.
I wasn't expressing distaste at the article, I was merely trying to provide an alternative solution to other/bots that are maybe not familiar with ftp commands. Infact my original post was a troll of sorts as the commands I typed are wrong anyway - I was hoping someone would point that out - you can't ftp and 'get' from a pc in the way that I described as windows does not run an ftp server, you would actually have to ftp from the pc to the mac and use 'put' instead.
To be honest I didn't even read the article, I just got the jist of 'transfer files from windows to Mac and pay $50 for it'.
Neato! Look at all those commands which would mean absolutely nothing to 90% of computer users. Knowing what all that means, and executing all of it in the right order is certainly much easier than just plugging in a USB cable and going to get a sandwich while the program copies everything over for you
Call me tight, but I'd rather spend a couple of minutes typing in those commands than spending $50 on a piece of software to do it for me.
nor does it provide the novice Mac user with any sort of useful interface since they will obviously be out of their element having just switched. In fact, it looks FUCKING USELESS.

YAWN....I seem to be in the right place.....maybe you should frequent mac(l)user.com instead of slashdot if all this command line stuff is too taxing...
I use inst daily, I don't have a problem with it. If you're getting so many conflicts then maybe you're not doing it right (maybe you forgot to read a package?). The most common cause of getting loads of 'conflicts' when installing IRIX is forgetting to read the 'unbundled' distribution, which is usually on the last Overlays CD (on Overlays 3 of 4 with 6.5.16).
In the UK there is an ISP offering a 500Kbps up and down satellite connection. A friend of mine, who lives in a rural area and cannot get cable/DSL, is waiting for it to be installed for his Mac. It's going to cost him £900 ($1400) for the modem/installation, plus a £60/month ($94) fee.
Oh dear! This is similar to the situation we (in the UK) were in a couple of years ago.
Just to rub salt in the wounds, an ISP in the UK announced recently a 512Kb ADSL service for £12.99/month (roughly $20).IMHO this seems a bit too cheap for them to make any kind of profit, but it's all good competition though:-).
I too am with NTL Broadband in the UK. I pay £25/month (just under $39/month) for 512Kb down/250Kb up. As above, rental of modem, etc is included in that price.
To me this is slightly ironic as it took *years* for broadband in the UK to become affordable, I have been waiting since 1997. I used to send emails to BT (who used to have a monoploy on the 'local loop') citing how much our American cousins pay for their broadband connections as an argument for BT to reduce their extortionate prices. Now, since BT have lost their monopoly on the local loop, it seems that the UK is cheaper than the US as their are more operators plying for business which has knocked the prices down.

From the FAQ: "SACDs, on the other hand, use DSD (Direct Stream Digital) high resolution coding. This samples the music at 64 times the rate of CD, or 2.8MHz
So the sample rate of this new CD format is 2.8MHz. Correct me if I'm wrong, but these CD's will all be pressed from a DAT or other such digital master that would have been recorded at, at best, 96KHz. This makes a 2.8MHz sampling rate pretty redundant does it not?
I am willing to bet SACD was dreamt up not by some Sony drone saying:
"OK, so how can we improve our technology and offer the public a better quality audio medium"
....but rather:
"OK, so how can we make loads more money and at the same time attempt to put a stop to piracy. We can also increase the sampling rate and flog it off as 'New Technology'"
I don't doubt that the quality of SACD is better than CD, but I do doubt that it is as noticable as comparing MP3 to CD for example.
That's true. Five years ago, everybody in the industry had SGI boxes, but now, it's mostly PCs. Animation software is much cheaper, too.
True in the CG side of the industry, people use Maya or 3DS MAX running on PCs. However post production companies are still using SGI boxes (Octane, Onyx) in conjunction with, for example, Discreet's Inferno/Flame/Fire/Smoke software for non-linear editing and compositing. These SGI systems are still very expensive as is the software and support contracts, etc.
This comment isn't offtopic....the link is wrong - there is a space where there shouldn't be one.
