Gather around, boys and girls, for a story how Dasunt was really dumb. This is a great story, btw, I want to kick myself in the arse every time I recall it.

About 5 years ago, one of my friends was at a police auction, and there were 10 upright arcade machines there, all in working order. They had been siezed, since they were modified to run illegal gambling. Since my friend has $10 on him at the time, he made the only bid, and got all the machines for the lowly price of $1/machine.

A year later he was moving out, and he offered to sell me the machines at $10/machine. I said no, since I didn't want to have a big hulking machine that only could play one game (I believe it was poker, blackjack, etc on the machines). The machines had great monitors and all the controls worked.

Then, about 2 years ago I got into console and arcade emulation heavily. I found out that a lowly K6-2 stuck in a machine with a special adapter/driver could run plenty of games and use the original monitor. *Sigh* I looked up prices on Ebay. Conservatively, since the machines did have a slot in the front to dispense money and thus weren't exactly mint, each machine could have been sold for $250.

D'oh, I am dumb.

My friend was happy, he bought them for the remote controlled relays in the machines that were used to "flip" the machine over to a non-gambling game whenever the cops came around. So, he got a ton of relays. I, in my naive state, got shafted. I believe he sold all his remaining machines (5) for $50.

Since I researched a bit on emulation and arcade cabinents in hopes of building a cocktail style machine, here's some useful links I found.

I'm not authoratative enough on GTK for Windows to answer your question, but the GIMP runs very well on Windows. It doesn't crash (much) and the GIMP itself is a development version. I think Tor Lillqvist has done a wonderful job of porting GTK to Windows. Keep in mind, other stuff like Dia and FreeCiv have been ported too. This leads me to believe that GTK for Win32 is a good platform.

sometimes the CD-ROM drive would vibrate really bad.

There are ways to slow down the spindle speed of a CD-ROM drive, which reduces the level of noice and vibration considerably.

The amateur station aboard Mir (R0MIR) has been transmitting Slow-Scan Television (SSTV) for the past 6 months or so. Check out the following links for some great images received from the station (the second link includes a lot of links to other archives of Mir SSTV images):

The cool thing about SSTV from Mir is that it is largely controlled by the station operators aboard , and is much more dynamic content-wise than stuff like weather satellites and stuff. They occasionally turn the camera on themselves, visiting shuttles, etc. Check it out, it's neat stuff. It is also fairly easy to receive and decode SSTV transmission using a soundcard, some freeware code and a radio capable of receiving the 2-meter amateur band. Not being a DOpus user myself, I'm not sure if this really shows DOpus well. Seems a shame that all GUI aspects that are ever copied seem to be the Win95 and Mac ones. The Amiga had some wonderfully designed GUI's.

The purpose of this software is not illegal copying of DVD disks. It is meant to provide information necessary to be able to program a DVD player for Linux. To do this, the CSS system needs to be incorporated in the player. Recently the (very weak) DVD content scrambling system was deciphered, freeing the way for a Linux DVD player. The CSS system is not a copy protection system, since it does not prevent copying of the disk. Writing information about the way an encryption scheme functions is completely legal. The source code and binaries on this site are completely legal too, since they contain no code from the DVD consortium or its members. The sources and programs on this site were written by third parties using clean-room reverse engineering methods which are (ready?) completly legal.

The software (source as well as binaries) offered on this site can be freely redistributed. It was written by authors who expressly permitted and encourage the redistribution of this software and information. The purpose of this software is not, I repeat not illegal copying of DVD disks. It is meant to provide information neccesary to be able to program a DVD player for Linux. To do this, the CSS system needs to be incorporated in the player. Recently the (very weak) content scrambling system was deciphered, freeing the way for a Linux DVD player. The CSS system is not a copy protection system, since it does not prevent copying of the disk. Writing information about the way a certain protection scheme functions is completely legal. The source code and binaries on this site are completely legal too, since they contain no code from the DVD consortium or one of its members. The sources and programs on this site are purely written by 3rd parties using clean-room reverse engineering methods, which is, again, completely legal. This software and information below make it possible for people who legally obtained their DVD movies to view them on their Linux systems.

www.rhythm.cx was hosting a list of mirrors for these files. That list of mirrors has been replaced with a page reading "This site has been taken down for legal reasons." Here's what the maintainer put on the site the day it was shut down:

With that said, there is a possibility that I may have to remove this site in the near future because like everyone else, I can't afford to go to court to fight it. Luckly, it seems fairly unlikely that any law firm will ever be able to get rid of all these mirrors at this point (there are currently 41 in 8 different countries and this list is growing every day). However, I have only seen very few mirror _lists_ like this one anyplace. If anyone has the resources, it might be wise to mirror this list of mirrors as well so that the right people will still know that these mirrors exist.
