Re:Sigh
Reality...
http://talkingpointsmemo.com/l...
The House Ethics Committee has quietly done away with the requirement that lawmakers disclose their all-expense-paid trips on annual financial forms, National Journal reported on Monday.
Trips paid for by private groups are now no longer required to be noted on annual financial-disclosure forms filed by Congress members, according to the Journal. The move was never announced publicly; the Journal said that it discovered the change in a review of the disclosure filings.

Re:if only!
Oh come on now... the guy may be a tea party-aligned rape fugitive who overrode his political party to caucus with the Neo-Nazis, gave the dictator of Belarus an advance on leaks to be used in purges against his enemies, attempted to blackmail aid agencies by threatening to release information that could get their sources killed (including Amnesty International, to the tune of $700k), makes his volunteers sign 7-figure ultra-repressive NDAs, caused the defection of most of Wikileaks's staff due to complaints from authoritarianism to diverting the organization's money to himself, writes on his blog about how he's a god to women and women's brains can't do math, made a fake op-ed in the name of one of his opponents supposedly supporting him and promoted it with a fake twitter account in his name, wanted his book to be called "Ban This Book: From Swedish Whores to Pentagon Bores", wanted it to be full of his sex stories and at one point interrupted his ghostwriter to leer at a couple of 14-year-olds before remarking that one was "fine until I saw the teeth", cyberstalked a 17 year old before he got famous, and so on down the line ad nauseum...
....that's still no reason to wish him ill. -

Re:Democrats voted
Thank you for the perspective.
Here's what I'm seeing from the outside:
- His district is 75% white, and less than 4% Hispanic. So his constituents know Hispanics mostly in the abstract
- The only concrete issue I'm seeing him hit on in #tcot #va07 tags is "amnesty".
- Two weeks ago he's polled as up by 34 points in his primary
- A week later (June 6th), on local TV he announces he's willing to work with Obama on "the border security bill".
- A couple of days later, his opponent is campaigning on this statement like it is "support for amnesty". This appears to be his only issue.
- Last night he lost by 10 points - a 40 point swing. Even for an internal poll, that's a suspiciously large swing.
I'm no detective, but the footprints look pretty darn clear to me.

Re:Fight your own battles
Certainly the electorate needs to get off their collective asses and change things, but at present there is no effective mechanism for them to do so. The election system has been gamed to the point that it's virtually impossible to wrest control from the two-faced party currently in control, short of a major grass-roots campaign to toss the bastards out, and such campaigns inevitably need leaders and organization to give them focus, which the NSA is quite likely doing their best to disrupt (we have documented evidence that the intelligence organizations have been infiltrating and undermining potentially powerful citizen groups since at least the McCarthy era, do you really think anything has changed?)
America is an Oligarchy interview with the paper's Author. Another analysis which I would recommend skimming over.
What is most incredible to me is that the data under scrutiny in the study was from 1981-2002. One can only imagine how much worse things have gotten since the 2008 financial crisis. The study found that even when 80% of the population favored a particular public policy change, it was only instituted 43% of the time . We saw this first hand with the bankster bailout in 2008, when Americans across the board were opposed to it, but Congress passed TARP anyway (although they had to vote twice).
Unless you get the "elites" involved you're doomed.

Re: H1B working as intended.
Nah. There are plenty of qualified candidates. Sometimes they even get elected. Like this guy.
Ultimately the real problem is the most of the electorate isn't capable of determining who is qualified and who isn't. This allows the incompetent in.

Who is al Qaida to you?

The Syrian "opposition" is 80+ % "Al Qaeda" - funded by Qatar and Saudi, for the same regional purposes, with a generous assist from these CIA heroes, that you rush to defend.

Re:If you are afraid to be known for your commentsPerhaps you need to read what's there. I just came from that article, and the first line of the second paragraph.. the first link in the article, says:
The Democratic-leaning polling firm, which provided its results to Talking Points Memo....
If, as anyone looking for the poll should do, you clicked the link... you were taken here: http://livewire.talkingpointsmemo.com/entry/poll-louisiana-gopers-unsure-if-katrina-response-was
At that point, you have access to the poll answers in question, the entire poll, as well as links to the shorter one of those as a download from Scribd. At what point did you decide to change the definition of "linked in the article" to "disappear?" It didn't really take much "luck" finding it, just a basic understanding of English and the ability to read. -

In gun-nut-land, where you are John Wayne/Rambo/The Lone Ranger, only the "bad guys" are ever hurt by guns. Here in the real world, guns cause immense amounts of damage.
OBJECTIVES: Switzerland has one of the highest rates of firearm suicides in the world. International studies show a positive correlation between the rate of households with guns and femicides with guns. Because its defense system requires a militia to keep personal firearms at home, Switzerland has a high rate of households with a gun.
METHODS: Records of suicides in the region of Basel between 1992 and 1996 were reviewed. Suicides with either army weapons or private firearms and suicides by other means were compared. Methods and types of homicides that occurred in the region at the same time were also analyzed.
FINDINGS: Firearm suicides were clearly the most frequent means of suicide. They were also used in 30.0% of domestic homicides, although other means were used at similar rates. Firearms for suicide were mainly used by men, especially army weapons. These men were younger, professionally better qualified, and fewer had ever been treated in one of the local state psychiatric services.
DISCUSSION: The use of firearms for suicide, rather than homicide, and particularly of army weapons by young, well-educated men, requires more attention in debates and informed policy regarding access to firearms and suicide prevention in Switzerland.

"The number of ham radio operators worldwide has dropped by about 10 per cent over the last decade, he added."
http://www.w0abr.com/ham-stories/internet-saps-ham-radio-popularity
"In the past five years alone, the number of people holding active ham radio licenses has dropped by 50,000, even though Morse Code is no longer a requirement."

I see you're right about there being an uptick in the US recently, BUT it's not much better than the attrition rate, AND:

"the recession and high levels of unemployment are driving people towards the relatively low-cost hobby."

Or is it just a different slant on things we already knew about? The first link in the posting was to a tumblr blog formatted to look like a magazine article. The second link cited is a Huffington Post article about how prosecutors viewed his "manifesto," which has already been discussed on slashdot.
TarenSK is entitled to his opinions. But they're not very interesting. Who would have expected publicly defying the law would motivate prosecutors to come down hard on a suspect?
Seriously, is Slashdot news for nerds anymore? Or just Talking Points Memo for the Pirate Party?

Huckabee says because no prayer in school.
Welcome to the lunatic fringe Mr Huckabee...
"We ask why there is violence in our schools, but we have systematically removed God from our schools," Huckabee said on Fox News, discussing the murder spree that took the lives of 20 children and 6 adults in Newtown, CT that morning. "Should we be so surprised that schools would become a place of carnage?"
Law enforcement has released few details on the alleged gunman, but Huckabee suggested that the separation of church and state may have spurred his rampage.
"[W]e've made it a place where we don't want to talk about eternity, life, what responsibility means, accountability -- that we're not just going to have be accountable to the police if they catch us, but one day we stand before, you know, a holy God in judgment," Huckabee said. "If we don't believe that, then we don't fear that."
He said those suffering from a crisis from faith should look to God in the community's response to the violence. But he added that "Maybe we ought to let [God] in on the front end and we wouldn't have to call him to show up when it's all said and done at the back end."
And Mr Huckabee is not alone in his evil version of Christianity..
Christian radio host Bryan Fischer took to his American Family Association radio show this afternoon to say that God didnâ(TM)t stop the horrific Connecticut elementary school shooting spree because he does not go âoewhere he is not wanted.â
Fischer made the case that, in his mind, God would have protected the shooting victims had there been a system of school prayer and a respect for the Ten Commandments in public classrooms.
âoeWhere was God when all of this went down?â Fischer began. âoeHereâ(TM)s the bottom line: God is not going to go where he is not wanted.â
He explained: âoeWeâ(TM)ve spent 50 years telling God to get lost. Telling God we do not want you in our schools. We do not want to pray to in our schools. We do not want to pray to you before football games. We do not want to pray to you before graduationâ¦. We donâ(TM)t want your word read in our schools.â

Re:Evidence
OK it's a very very good thing that scientists have resisted the urge to lie to the American public. If they did that, if they gave into that, then they'd be forever on the hook to prevent it from being discovered- an impossible task. When it was discovered then every utterance they make would be dismissed henceforward. The scientific community is doing the part of its job it and only it can do they ONLY way it can and should be done- speaking the truth, and if you happen to live in Virginia and Ken Cucinelli is your State prosecutor, speaking the truth to a sociopath in power. .
There's another part of the being a scientist job that they need to do better at and that's educating the public. I went to school with a hard science major and I know how little scientists actually like teaching , at least, most of them. They want to do research and everything else is a nuisance to them.
They need to get over it. They need to come out fo their labs and the safe world they know and get down in the fucking mud with pigs on the other side. Everyone's life depends on them taking themselves out of their comfort zone and throwing down the way Michael Mann has done.
But lie? Only if your goal is to lose in the biggest way possible. There is no substitute, nothing with the equivalent power of knowing and telling the truth . The super-weapon in this fight, the atomic bomb that we and only we have is the truth. If we give that up, if in a moment of weakness or panic we give that up and try on the magic ring of lying, of manipulating, of presenting opinion as fact, then we've given up the only thing that can really save us. Here's reality- scientists are telling the truth about what the near future holds. Sean Hannity at. al. are a psychopathic liars who are flat-out intellectually incapable of understanding the technical issues which define climate change and instead substitute their preferred "narrative" and the net effect of which will be to point-blank murder your kids via ecological collapse.
Ask Nate Silver how powerful the truth is and ask the subhuman scum at Unskewedpolls :

what you get when you try to force reality to conform to your preferred masturbation fantasy. Or better yet ask Romney what good lying to yourself is in
;the end.The opposition are fantasists. They live in a psychological world in which there simply IS no distinction between what makes them feel good and what they take as reality. Look at their position on virtually any issue and you see the same phenomena. They have none of what psychologists call "reality testing". Societies on the losing end of history all share this characteristic.
We have our reputation as truth tellers intact. That is everything because it's the INVARIANT truth tellers, whoever never stooped to lying and therefore preserved the trust of society who will be calling the shots- completely unopposed- presently. If that seems like an unlikely event then stay tuned. The summer of world-wide crop failures and runaway food prices hasn't exploded the fantasists' bunker yet, but it will, because now there's no escaping it anymore.
Yes the political picture looks bleak but events have a way of changing things overnight, like *that*.
When those events happen, as they will, as the data tells us they have to, we can only step forward to lead if our reputation is unquestioned.

Re:Math
Because the USA's economy at this time sucks for almost everyone regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation or age and that is a big drawback for any incumbent and his party in any barely functioning democracy. That's why I think republicans had the election in the bag, but by pandering too much to their extreme right wing they ended losing. See

I don't believe this is Scientific Enough
The only people in that poll are 360 users who choose to watch the debate on their XBox and not just over the regular broadcast. People who didn't want to be bothered by random questions during the debate ether didn't answer, or watched it on broadcast. The given response isn't that far out of line with the US Population ether, or at least the Republican population of the US like in this talking points memo poll where 74% approve of drone strikes. The summery is clearly written by an anti-military nut job who believes that their view is the one held by the majority when the truth is clearly pointing and laughing at them.

Re:Obama's kind of been a dick about this
Not to beat a dead horse, but while he initially campaigned against the FISA bill, he did change his mind later in his campaign.
http://tpmelectioncentral.talkingpointsmemo.com/2008/07/obama_fisa.php
The distinction being, he was never in a position to promise a veto on the FISA bill. He should have stood against it, as ALL members of congress should have, but i think you're suggesting he made a promise which is at odds with what was actually happening at the time. He could have promised to repeal it, if he hadn't have changed his mind after amendments had been made to it. I just see you knocking him for not living up to a promise that he was never in a position to have made. -

Amazon? Of all companies, AMAZON?
Did we collectively forget how when a random US senator ordered Amazon to take down wikileaks, with no legal authority to do so, Amazon complied with a ridiculous excuse about terms of service violations?
This is the same Amazon which Ubuntu is now working with?
Shame on Amazon, and now Ubuntu too... and "opt out" makes me want to puke. This is the sort of thing Ubuntu is supposed to be a safe haven FROM.

Re:Great NewsYou've got it backwards. The Occupy movement has had a significant real world impact. It brought the issue of effective tax rates for the rich into the presidential race, including the obscenely low 15% tax rate paid by Romney.
http://media.talkingpointsmemo.com/slideshow/mitt-romney-taxes
Now that Mitt Romney's confirmed what we've long suspected about his effective federal tax rate -- "It's probably closer to the 15 percent rate than anything" -- we have a fact worth contextualizing. Though it could easily be less, assume Romney effectively pays 15 percent in taxes on all his income to the federal government. How does he stack up to the rest of us, most of whom are regular wage earners? When you account for the fact that most people also pay payroll taxes, and don't enjoy enormous deductions, credits or other benefits, you see that Romney's making out about as well as a taxpayer who makes $50,000 a year. Not bad for a man whose net worth is estimated to be in the neighborhood of a quarter billion dollars.
Meanwhile, the Republican controlled House has voted 33 times in 18 months to repeal Obamacare.
Breaking news!! The House of Representative voted to repeal all of Obamacare – for the 33rd time.
In a recurring political ritual, Republicans in the chamber denounced the law as a government takeover and said that all of it has to go. Then they backed up their statements with a vote.
The action has virtually no chance of becoming law. The Democratic majority in the Senate is certain to block it. And if for some reason it does not, Obama has promised to veto it.
So who is acting more like a troupe of cognitively impaired monkeys? I would bet that after so many failed attempts the monkeys would have given up and moved on to something more useful.
Score: Monkeys 1, Republicans 0. It's not fair to compare either monkeys or Republicans to the Occupy movement because they are not playing in the same league.

Re:Well thats a relief.
This shit is why in 2008 the Supreme Court upheld Indiana's voter ID law, 6 to 3, and in their decision stated "Flagrant examples of such fraud have been documented throughout this Nation's history" - the fact that you choose to ignore all the proof, and then sit there asking for proof, is proof that you are a Democrat shill.
Proof that you're a dishonest Republican hack: none of the case you mentioned would have been prevented with voter ID laws.
Not. One.
Would Lessadolla Sowers
Fraudulent absentee ballots. No voter ID law would have prevented it.
When people admit it
Voting via absentee ballot and then voting at a polling booth. No voter ID law would have prevented it.
How about when they plead guilty?
How about mentioning that those were poll workers that were doing the fraud? How the fuck are voter ID laws going to prevent that when the people checking the ID's are the ones engaged in the fraud?
Because you're a dishonest Republican hack, that's why. At least the Pennsylvania Republican hacks were honest enough to admit that their voter ID law does nothing to prevent in-person voting fraud.
Because for all intents and purposes, in-person voting fraud does not exist in the United States. In the last decade there's been only 11 case out of over 600 million votes cast. However, 25% of blacks don't have "proper" ID's, along with millions of seniors, native americans, students, poor folks....you know, the sort of people not likely to vote for Republicans.
Voter ID is about voter suppression, end of story.

Re:Proof at last!
Speaking of that, what Linux person would buy an Apple product?!
Scientists tend to use Macs. For example the teams working on the Curiosity Mars rover. http://idealab.talkingpointsmemo.com/2012/08/mars-curiosity-rover-team-spills-mission-details-on-reddit.php?ref=fpnewsfeed
So either they are using MacOS because that's a better OS for them than Linux or Windows. Or they are choosing Mac hardware to run Linux or Windows. Maybe a bit of both.

Re:Catch-22
There's an old joke in the writing community about how if you're going to write a (real) man into a book as a character and are afraid that he might sue for libel, write him in with a tiny penis. Because the men who would sue and claim, "yes, your honor, I'm the guy with the tiny penis in this book" are few and far between.
Michael Crichton kind of went overboard with this one, though.

Re:You are so, so wrong
Among other things, he's dramatically changed the health care landscape for the better,
I.e., Obama has added more entitlements without addressing the question of cost control in any meaningful way. In different words, the young are getting shafted even more than they already are by the current system.
The Congressional Budget Office begs to disagree with you, with an approximately 7% reduction in healthcare costs compounded over time.
But don't let that influence your thinking -- mathematics is known for its liberal bias.

Re:Both Ways
Every single survey, poll, etc that was on the news at the time had between 96 and 98% of american black voters voting for him. That means they ignored all policy, all politics, all financial plans, all qualifications, all personal history, all things in general he said he'd do, and just for him based on the color of his skin.
What you mean is "96 and 98% of american black voters" voted for the Democrat - the 96% Obama got is consistent with the 90% that Gore got, the 88% Kerry got, the 90% Mondale and Dukakis got, the 94% Johnson got etc.
If blacks were voting overwhelmingly based on race, than you should see overwhelming support for Hermain Cain, Alan Keyes, Ward Connerly, etc. That's not the case.

Re:Why is the solution to every problemyes, because government employees pay no state or local taxes, and don't purchase anything at the Wal-Mart. they get regular airdrops from Joe Bidens persanal helicopter, I guess.
Factoid: reduction in government jobs due to cutbacks in the past few years (mostly spearheaded by republican backed austerity measures) are responsible for a percentage point or more in the unemployment rate. Also, too, a lot of those jobs lost were held by women, contrary to the current republican talking point about the how Obama's policies are bad for women.
http://talkingpointsmemo.com/images/gov-jobs-ue.png (Courtesy of the Washington Post)
"If those state and local workers had kept their jobs, they would’ve been making and spending money the whole time, which would have further boosted the economy and provided jobs for other people in the private sector. Economists call this the multiplier effect, and it would’ve pulled the unemployment rate down further. On the flip side, if that demand had never been subtracted from the economy, fewer people would’ve grown discouraged by the economic outlook and would’ve remained in the workforce — instead of dropping out entirely as they did in reality, in large numbers. That would have pushed the unemployment rate back up.
But broadly, the unemployment rate would be significantly lower than it is in the absence of the past three years’ public-sector job losses, which in turn were the direct consequence of the austerity Republicans at the state and federal level demanded. "
