Re:Black Wednesday
Actually the AutoCAD for Windows install CDs should do just fine.
We thought this would be a stumbling block but it turned out to be the opposite - not only did we get AutoCad R14 running on Debian GNU/Linux within 24 hours but it actually ran faster! Can you believe that?

How about VMWare?
Maybe one of these might work for you? http://www.tech-edv.co.at/lunix/CADlinks.html

Re:Linux?
...or Live CD/DVD distro dedicated to CAD. It might be a simpler "install" process than VM, since nothing is actually installed on the student's machine. Some synergy from sites like http://www.tech-edv.co.at/lunix/CADlinks.html and http://www.linux-live.org/ might do it. -kf

Re:It's not photoshop, it's AUTOCAD and VIDEO EDIT
But, for many more people I think the missing 'killer apps' for Linux are two things:
REAL CAD (2d and 3d, in particular AutoCAD)
Video Editing.
So this is what's hindering Linux adoption? Seriously? Both? How many people out there need one of these never mind BOTH of them. Something like 0.000001%, I'm sure.
And anyway, why not spend money on a company that does provide CAD products for Linux, such as any of these. So now, the only thing hindering Linux adoption is video editing?
Well, I really can't comment about that, since I've never needed anything more than mencoder (just video encoding) can do. You know, like the majority of users who never make videos, don't need CAD pcakages aren't photogtaphic professionals, etc...
Now I'm ranting further and further from your post, but I'm sure that it used to be the case that the real thing hindering Linux adoption was the lack of audio tools. Since the creation of decent tools, and before that office suites. As more and more areas become available to Linux, the people focus on smaller and smaller segments, claiming they they're hindering adoption.
What next? Linux will never reach the destop until it has professional woodworking tools? -
Re:I don't get it
But if you have a piece of code which you wrote in its entirety
If you have such code then it is yours. The GPL would only apply to it if you decided to release it under the GPL.
If you want your code to be proprietary, then it is proprietary ... even if it runs under Linux.
If you did NOT write your piece of code in its entirety, but you linked in someone else's GPL code to complete your work, then there is a potential problem. If you linked dynamically to LGPL libraries, then no problem ... your code does not include the bits you linked to, and the bits you linked to specifically allow you to link to them.
If you linked statically to GPL code ... then your end product does include a GPL part, and there is a possible problem. What you need to do here is write a small LGPL "wrapper" which links your proprietary code to the GPL code as a sort of a "bridge". The nvidia and ati closed-source 3D graphics card drivers for Linux work like this.
There are a number of ways to write your own closed-source proprietary code and have it run legally on Linux.
This is shown clearly by this page where a significant number of the programs are closed-source and proprietary:

Re:Need a CAD package
I just found a good list here http://www.tech-edv.co.at/lunix/CADlinks.html

Re:*ONLY* open document standards? AWESOME!
since you're in the industry and all...
You did notice I said I'm a student, right? ; )
Anyway, most of my (limited) experience has been with AutoCAD and SolidEdge, which are both expensive and Windows-only. I have done some research into the matter at times, though, but I don't think I'll be of much help.
First of all, if your needs really are simple, you could just use a drawing/diagramming tool like xFig, Dia, or Inkscape. Beyond that, though, all I can really suggest is QCad or possibly BRL-CAD, seeing as how those are about the only two Free* CAD apps for Linux that aren't already dead or "in planning" or whatever.
I also found this list, although I suspect it isn't of much help.
*I don't like QCad's license either, especially seeing as how the Free Software version is crippleware. I'm surprised nobody's forked it yet -- it needs it!

Re:Video card for Sparc?
You could move to Solaris and run AutoCAD for Solaris; otherwise This article about running the Windows version under Linux looks useful.
The CAD applications I'm familiar with are all related to electronic engineering... Cadence, Mentor, OrCAD, EAGLE, etc. Some of these have Solaris versions without a Linux option, some have both. I'm sure there are good generic CAD programs out there for Linux, but I haven't used any.
This link looks useful. -
ExpressPCb or PCBExpress
http://www.pcbexpress.com/ or http://www.expresspcb/:
We have both.
Have a look at http://pcb123.com/.
For more stuff look at free CAD tools in the market:
For Windows:

For Linux:

List of alternativesI'd have to agree that most alternatives that run on Linux aren't ready yet. But I was surprised to learn Pro/E is availible. http://www.tech-edv.co.at/lunix/CADlinks.html
UGS is also porting software. http://www.ugs.com/about_us/press/press.shtml?id=
4 367Personally, I'd like to see SolidWorks ported. Yes, I ditched Acad for solid modelers 12 years ago and would be very reluctant to go back.

Found after googling for a couple of minutes
open source CAD program linux
I think the links listed here to linux installable CAD oriënted development projects is worth following.

Re:CAD
There is a BlenderCad currently in Pre-Alpha. Find it in this page of CAD related software for Linux. -
Re:CAD
If you want major then you should be looking at Pro/Engineer from PTC. I haven't used it but a student co-op I was supervising used it at the University of Utah and thought I would like it. It looks awesome, and expensive.
http://www.ptc.com/go/wildfire/index.htm
The next logical choice would likely be Varicad. They have a demo version you can download and play with. I've used this and its not bad, about on the same level as AutoCAD. When I get around to buying a CAD application for linux this will likely be it.
http://www.varicad.com/
And things are always changing. It may be worth a look to google around for current offerings. A good start would be here:

Re:sigh
I'd imagine so. I don't know if I can help you with that one but there are options. Like all Open Source software, there's no guarantee that any of these will work of provide you with the features you need. If you know c or c++ well, I'm sure whatever something doesn't do, you could add to it. This might be the way to break Linux into your industry. Find and upgrade one to the Killer App (tm by someone I'm sure) for CAD users.

Re:It's about Freedom, Stupid...
I couldn't find any COGO links. But then, I searched for COGO in general, and the only suites that came up were DOS and Unix. I can't comment on the quality of the Linux software, as I don't do this stuff. But I wasn't under the impression that Windows was the premier CAD environment (all the CAD and Database guys at work have big Unix workstations).
